I write as a student working with SoftImage 2012. Attempting to self educate but have encountered a barrier to advance. In modeling, I have been able to create basic geometric figures but have not been able to engage in wireframing. My interest is in urban subways... particularly subway cars. The userguide is accurate but not instructive and so I seek to connect with a member with this skill set. Hoping for some guidance in this regard as I await a reply.

When you stated "basic geometric figures but have not been able to engage in wireframing". This sounds like you understand how to place primitive shapes, but need more instruction in general modeling.

I personally recommend purchasing a full course in Softimage modeling, where you would get several hours of instruction. Regardelss, the links you cand find above should give you a good start.

Greetings and much thanks for your timely reply. Please know that I am actually looking through Digital Tutors videos through another students account. If the specific guidance I seek is there I have yet to see it. Don't think I want to get a second account to see the identical topics . What I've seen is highly instructive... just not for this specific skill set.

Well there cant be a tutorial for every object in the world, you should first start to learn the whole modeling workflow and how to create/modify geometry, then you will reach a point where you can model whatever you want, subway cars included.

If you are looking for a Subway cars modeling tutorial i'm afraid you wont find any, i would suggest to start with learning the modeling in general.

Since you have access to Digital Tutors and seem to be interested in finding your answer there about modeling, they have two amazing Softimage modeling courses;
One is Automotive Modeling in XSI ( and the other is Introduction to Modeling in XSI (
(Don't ask me why the Automotive course is listed under Mental Ray Tutorials, as it is mostly modeling, but has surfacing and rendering at the end)

The Introduction course is simple and can get you started on almost everything you need to know for basic modeling, while the Automotive course goes into curves and NURBS and very advanced modeling. Modeling a subway car isn't much different from modeling any kind of vehicle - the techniques are very much interchangeable.
Both of those courses are very long, very detailed, specifically regarding modeling, and very well-done.
And yes, the "specific skill set" is most definitely there between those tutorials.

But like RebelPixel pointed out, you're not going to find a specific subway car modeling tutorial. I've never seen one at least. But it doesn't matter anyway. You learn to model, you learn to think about what shapes you need and what tools and techniques to use, and soon you can model anything with practice.

That's just the way it is. Tutorials are designed to get you going on the right path, to give you the information you need about the tools and techniques, but the rest is up to you.
