View Full Version : Mesh Surgery 1.1 Update
Per-Anders 11-01-2003, 08:43 AM Accept no pale imitations:
Mesh Surgery 1.1 is now available. This is more than just a bugfix update, we have added and improved number of key areas. (and here are some videos to show this off).
First off, we've added axis mode to the hinge tools. The hinge tools axis is a much more useable axis than the inbuilt cinema axis providing far more feedback, as well as finally a decent rotate loops gizmo:
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/mov/newgizmo01.swf.html
Second we decided that one axis at a time is fine, but being able to have any combination of axis at any time and being able to switch them on and off as you want, so you don't have to keep switching tools with a shortcut or button is dandy, just select the tool while holding shift :D
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/mov/multiaxis01.swf.html
We also thought there should be a mode for it... a sticky axis mode, so that you can click on an axis and it'll remember that so that you don't have to keep clicking on that axis handle to get it to move/scale/rotate in that constraint:
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/mov/stickyaxis01.swf.html
After that we stuck in a bunch of modes for it, Global, Object, Selection, Free and Local... now of those I kinda think local is the most enjoyable. Think of Normal tools on steroids... cos you've got all three axis of movement, rotating (and two axis of scaling) local to the polygons points or edges selected... and of course it works with soft selection falloff ;) Personally I like how it works with the extend tool once you given that a keyboard shortcut... in fact... this is just that combination in action:
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/mov/localmode01.swf.html
So after we'd gone about improving the hinge move, scale and rotate some, we then had a look at the camera a little. We decided that something cinema lacks is just a quick keyboard shortcut to rotate and align the camera to the object's x,y or z axis or even just orient without moving, it's something small, but an important timesaver.
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/mov/xyzaxis01.swf.html
Then because we found a lot of users wanted to use mesh surgery with the mirror object we found the mirror object to be on it's own unsatisfactory... if you extruded polys you ended up with polys where you didn't want them, and an extrude right next to the mirror axis could end up a total mess, not to mention how easy it was for gaps to appear. so another little timesaver, the Mirror Clamp tag was born, this locks points to an axis... and even allows you to kill polys generated by extrudes along the mirror axis:
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/mov/mirrorclamp01.swf.html
Then we decided to add in one loop selection mode we left out before, simply Interactive Edge ring, here you see it with local scale and move on Meg:
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/mov/edgering01.swf.html
And finally we decided that while we already had a huge array of falloff types and controls we needed to add one more very special one. That's Selection Based Falloff (in fact we added three variants of this)
http://www.tools4d.com/MeshSurgery/flashclips/smove1.html
(more videos of this available here : http://www.tools4d.com/MeshSurgery/basics/ms.htm )
And now, just because there were some doubters, here's a short overview of the soft selection modes and controls in Mesh Surgery (the new additions here are the three selection based falloffs); everything else is how it was before.
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/mov/falloff01.swf.html
In addition to all of this, we also added vertexmap painting mode to mesh brush inbuilt for added speed, of course you get to use all the falloff types, and you get to choose between the inbuilt vertexmap display and our rather nicer falloff display with lighting. Also added to mesh brush is Select brush, which selects within the brush area against a limit in the falloff. As well as a whole load of new script controls (and a couple of example scripts, paint objects on surface and a script version of the vertexmap paint) allowing the user to even build up their own interface for their creations, and many many other enhancements to the package overall in workflows, visual queues other enhancements, and of course all known bugs fixed.
Mesh Surgery is currently priced 99 euros for the duration of the "Early Bird" period (till the manuals are complete) and is available from
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/
and
http://www.tools4d.com
All those who already purchsed will of course be recieving the update for free.
Mesh Surgery - the original, expect nothing less.

Hi mdme_sadie
These are very good news.
Do you offer a download link for the update ??
Regards axel
Hi,
what good news in the morning. Now really everything I ever dreamt of is built into this fantastic plugin. Is this a free update for current EB users? If so, where can I get the update?
Thanx in advance,
cheers mnu

a link will be posted out directly to all those that have already purchased. I've already sent out my lot, Paul will be seinding his instructions out later on today (it's currently sleep time where he is), I hope that the slight delay for some of you wont be too much of an inconvenience :)

Fantastic new features .
It's sure you're writing a piece of the core of the future version of Cinema. Impressive.
Did you plan to add (if not just implemented) a sort of shift for snapping rotation at fixed angle. Everytime writing 90° (or similar) in the coordinate manager is quite annoying and slow the workflow.
Per-Anders
11-01-2003, 09:33 AM
try holding down shift while rotating ;)
(you can set how many degrees of rotation it quantizes to)

 Oh sorry, It works only if quantize is on and so I didn't notice this. Thanks for the tip

Absolute Genius!
This is all I could hope for and so much more. Congratulations on re-writing C4D modelling. I am really pi**ed off though as I am too busy animating to play with it.
Thanks,

Much much respect on this guys.
(i remember bitching about the axis in a number of threads/posts...whether any of my comments went in one ear or out the other is relevant now....and your solution totally resolves my complaints at the time...Thank you both)

cheers for the update and additions.
I have one small quirk, though - when rendering deadlines are tight I usually add my creation workstation to the list of NET clients, but as it uses the same plugin directory as the full cinema (which has mesh surgery), I'm constantly asked to supply a serial everytime it is launched, and tracking down the serial each time gets a little tiresome.
anyway around this?

this update should fix that have you tried the update with net yet?
Most excellent, coolest part is that when I watch your movies I canŽt understand that all this stuff isn't already built in they look so natural.
My only problem now is that I have to work with XSI for a couple of weeks to help out at a basic 3d Course at my University and these tools will make it inpossible to start XSI instead of Cinema. So I'll have to wait a little longer=(.
Thanks alot for your great work!!

hi sadie,
I am still encountering the problem after the 1.1 update. This has also been an issue with samir's DCL, but cancelling that particular plugin registration dialogue does not seem to affect the functionality (nor trigger the reg box) when I start the core again - unlike MS.
however, this isn't really a big issue - I should really move the client to another directory with it's own plugin path.
edit: forgot to mention that I'm using the 8.207 pc versions of both c4d and net client.
cheers~
You owe me medical bills, I read the features, then passed out cold from shock as my head hit the computer!
Oh wait I live in Canada so no worries ;)
Seriously though, amazing stuff here! Has Maxon sent you that truckload of cash yet?? ;)

You can download the flash movies onto your hdd by removing the .html from the link, and use a download manager to download the .swf file.
for example:
change
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/mov/newgizmo01.swf.html
to
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/mov/newgizmo01.swf
and use that bottom link in a download manager. You can also right click the bottom link, save as :)

BRAVO!
:applause:
I didn't think that Mesh Surgery could get any better...
This is almost too good to believe. It would be tragic for
these tools not to become part of the Cinema core.
The best thing about these tools (and the reason why
the BhodiNut and Cidertank stuff always shines) is in
the quality of their implementation. They are smooth,
clean and look fantastic -- class A quality from top to bottom.
mdme_sadie.... Question :
Have you and paul given any thought to
adding a polygon count/mesh info HUD in the viewport?
Also, a functional shaded-wire (edged faces) mode when
modeling with HyperNurbs would be a great addition.
I never have understood why the option isn't there in C4D.

hi, _dd did you follow the installation instructions correctly in the install readme? (the update has to be installed correctly by following those guides, and not overwriting any folders in the mehs surgery folder itself, just certain files.

it sounds like you have 2 installs of mesh surgery in your plugins folder.
try installing again from scratch after removing any mesh surgery folders in your plugins folder.
first install the original mesh surgery 1.0 then unzip the update outside of your plugins folder and copy the files in as requested (remember to copy the contents of the folders into the already existing folders, not overwriting the folders themselves). and overwrite the MeshSurgery.cdl /.xdl that you've already got.

k i shall try this in the morning
but as stated i only installed the items in the folders and not the folders
it asked me if i should over write the files and i said hell yeah over write them
then i started c4d
so i shall let u know wat occurs tomorrow i was going to do a fresh install anyway to see if that clears it all up
thanks for replying fast m8
cant wait to see the new features
also did u see my bug in mesh brush that i posted in the other thread.

I just tried it out of curiosity and it works on a Mac with Explorer, using the download manager.
But I prefer to use a shareware app called Web Devil. It works better and downloads all the links on the page into the same folder hierarchy of the web site.

I don't seem to be able to use vertexmap paint with mesh brush, I keep getting an "unable to read file" message although it is in the correct folder, everything else seems to be working fine.

hi, there appears to be a flaw in the text file for that script... however the script is really just an example... use the inbuilt vertexmap paint instead which is by it's nature faster. it's just about Selection Brush
if you really want to play with the script, then load it up in a text editor, then copy and paste the text into the little coffee script window under teh script tab, either make a sctroke to see that it works, or hit compile to check that there are no errors, then click the save button in the dialog, and save into your meshbrushscripts folder as something else (delete the original after htat). hopefully that hsould fix it.

A couple of questions on the update:
I don't get the MirrorVice to show up anywhere (Menu, Command Manager. Wot gives?
The "Extend" feature doesn't seem to do anything at all (I didn't really test it with the EB release. The Getting Started doc has a brief description but how does one use it?
Also, I get none of the Position/Direction controls for the falloff as depicted in the flash movie at http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/mov/falloff01.swf.html
Any info would be appreciated.

Same with me, but I don't think its a bug. Just we don't know where they are
Took me a while to find that axis gizmo thing.
Also the extend don't do anything for me either, but I think its just down to that I don't know how to use it, I havn't read the Getting Started doc yet

download the latest version of Mesh Surgery (just posted about it in the other thread here) and then if it causes a problem, load in the ramp file into a text editor, copy and paste it back in to the script editor and, and resave using the button in the mesh surgeyr dialog.

Mirror Vice is a tag, you'll find it in the Expression Tag menu (same menu as you find Xpresso). The liquid nitrogen menu hasn't changed from the first release apart from the addition of look down x, y and z (if you don't believe me simply re-install the first release. The spaces are caused by a bug in cinema's sdk, where itshould display just seperators, instead for some reason it displays spaces.

Thanks Per-Anders, Vice found -where I should have looked in the first place!
(end shame mode, re-enter quiz/nag/worry mode) ;)
1. The Extend command still remains a mystery of the "nuthin happens" kind. It could well be me again - but the tool doesn't seem to behave as described (repeat edge extrusions etc)
2. I also get the "Out of memory" error with ramp and the re-save trick doesn't do it for me. I suppose you mean the ramp script, not the "._Ramp.txt" file included in the update.
3. Are we supposed to havePosition/Direction controls for the falloff (as in the demos)?
I love this baby, so I'm just checking that it is in perfect health.
Long live the 3rd Party!

No out of memory on ramp now - the resave trick did it for me.
IŽbe interested in the purpose of
._Pinch_Twirl.txt
._Ramp.txt
._Ripple.txt
Loading into Coffee editor doesnŽt show anything. Seems to be not a normal textfile. Are these files necessary?
Thanks

Think of the extend command as a zero-length extrude that doesn't change your tool mode. This command extrudes a new poly selection and selects the extruded copy. Until you move/rotate/scale the extruded copy you won't see anuthing as the copy is in the exactly the same place the original. To see something happening, try this: create a cube, make it editable, select a face poly, hit extend, and then move the selected poly. You'll see it's been extruded.
When attached to a key (I use Shift-X) it's a real time saver to quickly add geometry without needing to change to tools. For some modelers this is a real workflow improvement.

Yea, this tool loves a shortcut
And, I even got me ramp working after a second re-save routine via notepad :applause:
Hi ,
I just downloaded the update, finally. I'm impressed. Very good work by you two. I really can no longer imagine how to model without Mesh Surgery in C4D.
But there's one thing that makes me wonder a bit. Why do the hindge tools not remember the tool settings. Is this intentional? When I switch back and forth from hinge Tools to the C4D Select Tool and I had HingeMode->Axis selected the next time I activate Hinge it shows again HingeMode->Edge. This is a bit disturbing. Or do I overlook a fundamental setting.
cheers mnu

if you want those contorls all you have to do is set the mode from Simple to Advanced in the preferences tab.
If you don't need numerical, then just press tab to lock/unlock the falloff (locked it will bring up it's handles so you can grab and move it around as you please).
