View Full Version : pencil work - girl on russian cd cover
danya 10-30-2003, 09:47 PM my first post of any sort of work, i mainly do pencil illustrations but have never learned to digitally touch them up, or color them... any suggestions on how i can start? [note, the contrast was bumped up a bit in photoshop to get the lines darker, otherwise i haven't done anything else to it]

i kno its not done or anything, i've fixed it somewhat so that she has a face first of all, and i worked around the head so that i doesnt look so small compared to the rest of her body. [its a photo reference from a russian cd i bought while in Uzbekistan, the group is called 'virus' and the album is called [pronounced in russian] 'bratishka' meaning 'brother' for those that are wondering]

Ok...I'll try to ignore the fact that she has no face and offer up a few things... hehe It'd be easier to judge if she had a face though...
Anyway....looks pretty good so far...I could be mistaken, but I'd assume in most pictures of people, the focus is the face and as it is now, the shoe is the the point of focus for me because it's the most detailed and the darkest. My eye just keeps going to the lower right of the image because of that and I assume that's not what you want. (Unless you're selling shoes?)
As far as color....to preserve some of the hand-drawnness of this type of work, I'd avoid the outline/fill look and maybe use some transparent washy looking colors to begin.
In general, if you're going into the world of color, you're better off creating another layer on Multiply mode, and doing a fill or gradient in the color that you think will likely dominate the image.
It's nearly impossible to effectively color anything starting on a white background because color is relative to what's next to it and you can never get the right tonal balance unless you start with canvas that's a medium value.
That's my two cents. :)

by shading the shoe you've made it into the focal point. Unless this is your intent, i really dont see why there would be a point to doing that.
the figure seems to be in a unconfortable pose, left leg is bending in a unatural manner.
the right arm is too short, you're probably should try to forshorten the right arm.
other than that it looks pretty nice. keep it up.
