View Full Version : Snapping on single Axis is not working
Dudeman 06-06-2002, 08:42 PM For some reason I can't point snap or grid snap on a single axis.
ALthough snapping all axis' works fine.
Do anyone one of you already helpful guys and gals out there have an idea why this is happening? A preference thing or something?
Thanks,
Dudeman:thumbsup:

One way that you can psuedo-planar snap is by v-dragging in an orthagonal view. The snap will be restricted to the front most snap points. It's not the same as purely restricting the snaps to a plane or axis but it yields nearly the same result (not snapping to deeper points that are occluded in the ortho views).

Thanks bigfatMELon! That's a good idea about snapping in Orthographic view.
But I'm still curious as to why I can't snap on a single axis in Perspective view.
Thanks agian for the snapping alternative.

I sometimes get this problem too, just after working with Maya for some time the single axis snapping just seems to turn off... works perfectly after I restart Maya...
Weird.
Oh and hey bigfatMELon, do you know how to lock the center snapping thingy to a plane? I don't know how I did it, but once the small yellow (It's yellow if you haven't clicked any axis) box in the middle of the manipulator, which usually is facing the camera, got locked to x-z plane, which pissed me off at that time, but I just now realized while writing this reply, how nice thing it would be!

Control-Clicking on any of the gnomon's axis will lock the gnomon out of that axis. So, if you want to constrain the gnomon to the XZ plane, Control-Click on the Y axis. Control-Clicking the gnomon's center point will return it to normal operation.

Really? Sweet!
I'm getting scared, Maya seems to have so much of stuff that it's just crazy... if only would I have time to do my connect plugin, and possibly look at a bridge polygon tool, I think modeling in polys would be almost perfect with my setup :)
Thank you so much bigfatMELon! You and svenip are just lifesavers
Damnit, I've just discovered that single axis snapping seems to be turned off completely, and I don't have a clue what's wrong with it. I just started Maya and made a simple polysphere, tried to move a verticle with only single axis but it didn't snap :hmm:

First, from the manual.
---snip----
You can constrain object positioning along a particular axis.
If you toggle on snapping and drag a Move Tool manipulator arrow (as opposed to dragging the pivot point), Maya uses a combination of the snap and the axis constraint.
If you are using grid snap, Maya snaps to the nearest grid line along the specified axis.
If you are using point snap and grab the end of the arrow, the manipulator has an initial jump because the center of the manipulator (not the tip) follows the mouse position.
It is useful to snap to an axis when you want to align a group of vertices to a particular Y position.
---snip----
Now, what I have found is that the above information only holds true if the Move tool is in World mode. Which does make some sense being that it is snapping to world positions. A damn fine reason to use this:
if(`manipMoveContext -q -mode Move`)
manipMoveContext -e -mode 0 Move;
else
manipMoveContext -e -mode 2 Move;

Thanks! That solved the problem. Funny thing, as that was propably the only setting I didn't play around with yesterday, was just trying out with different selection types and all kinds of stuff... but that did the trick, thanks once again bigfatMELon! :thumbsup:

That's it!!!!!!!
World Mode.
Thanks BFM! And thanks wT for keeping the discussion going.
Everything is so surreal for me with Maya. I'm coming from a Max background.
Every day I get it a little more clearer. Definitely two different languages.
