View Full Version : character rigging questions
sebek27 10-30-2003, 02:53 PM I was wondering if there is any good plugins that aid in character rigging for C4D ? I found this unbelievable one for LW called Auto Character Setup that basically creates bones on your character just by clicking a button ! and then you can setup sliders for each body part that will be animated... also, is there a good tutorial on rigging a character in Cinema ? thanks !

You are using R7, right? The SetNullObj plugin is great for
setting up IK in your rig. NAAM's IKTool is also very helpful
for IK setup. Besides these there are no plugins for rigging
except MOCCA for R8 :( Rigging in pre-R8 versions can be
really a pain. Check out the vertex-paint option of the live-
selection tool. Its great for making vertex-maps. There is also
a great tutorial by Wesware about rigging.

Bonderland looks great (link by Smoke above). Still in Beta but you can download it.
I had Golem ($300!!!). I knew nothing about rigging and it didn't have a lot of tuts but lots of epressions and things to help you rig, but at the time I had no idea what I was doing, so didn't know what I needed to use.

i second the 'bonderland looks great'!!!!
even though it's in beta, it is a great (the greatest?) plugin for CA in cinema! takes some time to get used to it, but then i'm sure you have this with every plugin that aims in this direction! (btw, the setnullobj is part of the bonderland beta)
I have been messing around with Bonderland for the past hour and it is very good. alot like 3dmax's character studio. this thing is just going to get better. Can't wait to see future versions.

The rigging character is my favorite game in C4D, please have a look to my last project here, with a friend, we organize a Boxing competition between our characters. A good exercice to test our technics solution. Well, he's better than me ! But I work hard to join him in animation...
This is the thread in Frenchcinema4d.com :

Just the feeling... But I prepare another story with another character called Zob... And Zigounet is a friend of Zob like Mastar, and some others...

Seriously weird stuff...but very original.
Yeah, I'm sure we're getting off topic here. Maybe start a new thread with your stuff. More people will probably look at it, too.

I forgot to explain the rig, humm...
This Rig is not perfect but it's seem to be a good compromize for anybody working on Character animation in C4D. The skelette is really simple 'cause we don't have spine or "colonne vertébrale", the hip support the head. Legs are HardIK and Arms are SoftIK ( mix between Wesware rig and Blazouf Tut on frenchcinema4d.com ). Some User Data on the hip to simplify some moves. Look at this...
Always in progress...
Au programme de cette version :
- Jambes / Legs : HardIK + expression Coffee.
- Bras / Arms - SoftIK
- Bassin avec "Données Utilisateur" ( Hip with User Data with Sliders ) avec Sliders : 1°) Avant-Arrière ( Bend front-back ), 2°) Twist Gauche - Droite ( Twist left-Right ), 3°) Coté Gauche-Coté Droite ( Side-side ).
- 4 cibles de membres ( 4 targets ) :
Controleur Jambe Gauche, Controleur Jambe Droite, Controleur Main Gauche, Controleur Main Droite.
XPRESSO :
- Pieds hors sol - Utilisation de Clamper pour évaluer la distance du pied au sol.
- Feet outside floor with Clamper.
En cours / In progress :
- Ajout de PoseMixer ( mélangeur de poses ) pour la main droite. Add PoseMixer for the right's Hand.
- Quelques paramêtrages de cibles / Some parameters to change for the Target...
Bugs Connus :
Pas vraiment de bugs mais bcp de choses à optimiser... Not really bugs but so many things to optimize.
19/08/03 - Tengaal move the Feets controller clampers on the floor to free them in the air. By this switch Master/Slave, the controllers became Bt_Pied_XX or Controller_foot_XX. The interest is if we make fly the character, the controllers follow him. Only one inconvenient, when we call back the character on the floor, the feets do breaking attitude and arn't pointing to the floor. Thanks Tengaal !
20/08/03 - I add some user data on the feet's controller to operate some manipulation on the foot ankle to pointing. I added too PoseMixers on the left thumb and left fingers. The finger's Poxemixer is the master of the hand ( The thumb posemixer operate within the fingers pose ). The second hand in progress...
