Hi there! Here is my first sketch. In the future the cubic structure will look more like a terrain ...I hope. Funny thing about this is that the main structure was the base ground of an organic structure that just didn't make the cut :I
I will start modeling tomorrow.
Hope you like it!

Well, the concept is interesting, but I'm afraid you may be a little late with it... there are at least two other concepts here already that look a lot like yours.
But if you can go from here and do something really stunning with it then I'm sure it won't be a problem!

Well you're right Stefan, i saw a totem somewhere and so far my work looks similar to other 2 or more with same background that i made just to fill it. I like it though :D
As you wrote earlier, I'm depending on textures and lighting to make the diference.

alright, so i've gone through all 22 pages of the challenge and I don't see anything that looks like this one. which ones are you guys talking about?

Having looked through all the other entries, I have to say that I like what you have here and you should totally go with it. Texturing, shading, lighting, rendering and composition can totally make any concept uniquely yours.

Just one comment IMO: I like the tall structure (totem), but if you plan on keeping that aspect ratio for the picture, maybe you could take that structure and make it taller, or make some other structures taller than that one. As it stands, the composition seems a little empty. Maybe you could use a taller totem in the middleground and place one really close to us, in the foreground.

I really like what you have so far, I wonder what colors you plan on using, and what you plan for the surfaces, but we'll have to wait for your next post for that!

I still think it's an original take on this challenge, until proven otherwise. ;)

Rock on!

good start man keep the good work . btw the main tower on your sketch looks different to the other entries , maybe you can take the concepts of this tower and add more details to the surface

Pillars with perfect spheres growing from inside them and circular pools of a strange glowing liquid that have transluscent balloons floating over them.
-Are this spheres some kind of plant or are they a product of alien technology?

OK, this is how the idea is evolving. Have not decided what to put on the background but it sure will be a complement of the story, not just a filler. Half of the contestants have one or more planets in their background ...me too, it looks cool :P

Tell me what you think! Critics are welcome.

First off I really like the -formation- of the crumbling on the towers. Maybe break up the edges just slightly too. I'm not sure as to how the perfect spheres are growing but besides the premise it looks nice against the rectilinear 'totems'. This would look quite interesting in 3d. Try to angle the sides at the top so it leans in toward the sphere. Or rather take a scoop out of it like you have underneath on the left. I'm not too sure about the balloons but I do like the glowing pools idea. They could make for interesting lighting effects if you brought the glow further up. In any case, thats just my thoughts on it. Nice work so far. :)

Lookin good,

I think (remeber this is only my thoughts) that this scence really lends itself to some really thick ground fog or mabey not fog but something more alien. I just like the idea of this pillars coming up through something.

The idea itself is great and im sure with the progression of your sketches youll reach something really great soon.

:o)

Keep up the good work:thumbsup:

So far I have desided to stick to some parameters so I don't go mad wondering if I do this or that. That doesn't mean it makes it easier but then again this is a challenge, isn't it?. Some of the things I will add to the rules, or may I say "my rules" are:
-no floating islands
-no traditional terrains (mountain formations on the background).
-no saucers
-no traditional plants (anything recognizable and green).
-no traditional buildings or structures.
:thumbsdow

I dare you to follow this rules, there are many already using them and in my opinion those are the best concepts around. Tell me what you think of this rules and which more we should add.

Now, about my concept: I'm sticking with the same idea and thanks for those who stopped by to share your opinions and ideas. I will post a new sketch in the next hour.

Trying diferent colors and a more defined terrain composition. Glowing globes didn't make the cut.
Not sure about the background but until I get a better idea this will do.

Wuzzup neospartan,

Cool concept, its almost tron like, very geometrical which to me says its a very efficient & evolved race, very advanced ... and the red makes me think its a very hot world... possibly multiple suns would help this feeling. Good stuff...

[SIZE=3]MY GOD[SIZE=1] I don't know what I'm doing here!
I feel like I went to a formal party without shirt, on shorts and barefoot. I even had the nerve to post rules I don't think I can follow. After browsing around I just started to understand this is not for newbies like me -this thing is for pros! Have you had that dream where you are in a party and sudenly you realize you're naked? Well thats how I feel now. I'm just going to act like nothing has hapened and continue like if I know what I'm doing :surprised

That said from now on I will be specially gratefull with the people that take the time to see my page and write their opinions about my work!

Aries326:Cool concept, its almost tron like, very geometrical which to me says its a very efficient & evolved race, very advanced ... and the red makes me think its a very hot world... possibly multiple suns would help this feeling.

Thx Aries326, It's the second time someone tells me that and some used sarcasm to get the point (not you). Anyway I will try to change it enough to end this Tron similarity without changing my concept. About the red, it is a test and haven't desided which lightning I will use.

No more concept sketches, I will start modeling the pillar-tower-totem thing. Thats the one structure I'll keep for sure, everything else is still a blury picture. Maybe the renders will enlight me, right now I'm out of new ideas:banghead:

Looking good, very misterious... got to wonder if anything lurks within this seemingly abandoned environment.
Good to know that im not the only one who feels out of my league in this challenge... its all good practice tho buddy, and in a few short years, guys like us will be up there with the best of them... well thats the plan anyway. ;)
keep up the good work.

Jeez neospartan, I'm getting the feeling you're putting alot of pressure on yourself to come up with the most obscure concept you can possibly think of - your ideas here are good & I think you should go with them regardless of what your seeing in other threads.
There's alot of talk going on in these threads about exactly what's original & what's not - truth is there's some pretty creative people in this comp who collectively have the ability to dream up just about anything, so it's gonna be hard to shock everybody! In the end the key is going to be the final execution - whether it's floating islands or saucers or whatever (incidentely both of which are in my current concepts in one form or another)...
Ease up & go with the flow!

No pics yet, have to fix my internal clock that is going nuts. Good news is that I have been enlighten with new ideas to solve some design problems. New problem is get it on 3D :annoyed:

Gobbledoc: Thx for your comment and I hope you're right about "guys like us will be up there with the best of them". Mystery is a key component and I plan not to put anything to obvious, so you won't know for sure if this formations are alien made or natural creations.

Boogey: You're right when you say "it's gonna be hard to shock everybody!" and thats where the pressure comes from. Even more, I have to shock myself to peace out with the world. Hope I'll make you all travel to a distant world and that for a second you believe its for real.

Just the start of it. No surprises, same concept. This will have a very long landscape, with a few structures similar to this one. Had some modeling done but power failed and, guess what? ...I didn't save :P
Already have some textures but will wait io post till model is more advanced

Hehe.. I know how you feel. I'm a n00b compared to most of the people in this forum too. I entered this just for the practice. You have an interesting idea though. I'm still trying to come up with some better ideas for my entry.

Us n00bs have to stick together :wavey:

I'm really working on details to stick to the sketches basic look. This is ALMOST finished but I'm hungry and tired so I'll pick up where I left tomorrow. As you can see I have changed format but it is not definitive. Critics welcome!

today: Tower Texture Test
Still haven't decided if this is final but this is close to what I planned it would look like. Seen many cool transparent shaders around but this was born to be solid, heavy and huge. This is a close up but it's final position is uncertain.
Ground is looking good but as things are going composition will be hard work.
Please take your time for C&C. I will really appreciate it :)

Looking good neospartan! I reckon the sphere atop that structure could maybe stand out a little more - but then it does look good how it is, too. It does look like a massive object! Will there be any reference to it's scale in the final scene, ie an itty bitty model of yourself standing nearby or something?

Boogey: "Will there be any reference to it's scale in the final scene, ie an itty bitty model of yourself standing nearby or something?"

My plan is get a very far view of the land so a human will be too tiny to be seen. Now this structure is cool but it takes to much of the picture as is. Some detail will fade because I have to give it a distance effect and it's size can change a lot in the future. :curious:

I'm working hard on composition and in the creation of other more simple structures for the ground. This structure is still the focus point but there will be much more to see! :D

:wip:
