View Full Version : problems with dust
blankslatejoe 06-06-2002, 05:19 PM I need to make photorealistic dust, like something you'd see over an old tabletop. I've tried a messing with particles for hours and don't have the budget for an expensive plugin. Does anyone know if there's any way to make this dust effect via particles, some freeplugin, or some other method? This problem has been bugging me forever and I'm almost about to give up entirely on it.
I'm using Max Release 3.

Does the dust need to be atmospheric? I mean, does it get kicked up into a cloud or puff at some point? If not, then you should be able to get by with just materials. Give us some more details on exactly what you're trying to accomplish, and I'm sure we'll be able to get you on the right path:)

ok, it's just a single frame shot, and i need to have a light coat, sort of a layer, of dust (from neglect) on a plasticy looking toy. I'm envisioning almost a blurry fur/hair kind of effect (which is why I assumed particles would yield the best results.
So, no, it never needs to be animated, but I >to a small extent< need to have control over where it is thicker or thiner.
Also the shot is going to be very very very close up, like a zoomlense, with a narrow depth of field. If it's possible to just use materials, I wouldn't have the slightest idea how.
Thanks in advance for your help!
