View Full Version : Model Button
actionfigure 10-29-2003, 07:43 PM Im new to Lightwave so Im not sure if this is normal...when I bring up the program..theres a button on the upper right that says Modeler...when I press it..its doesnt do anything. I thought it was suppost to bring up the modeler screen. Again..forgive me for this naive question but yesterday was the first time Ive used it. I also tried some of the tutorials but they skip steps that I need and it leaves me not finishing it....
Thank you inadvance...

Look under start menu->lightwave->modeler. Sometimes lwhub will act strangely and those buttons won't work.

hey. once you have your model save it, open layout, load your object and then setup the lights/camera etc and then render.
hope this helps. and welcome to lw!!

Usually when the hub is active, you can send the object via lwhub using the tab on the upper right corner of modeler's screen. Otherwise you have to load the object using file->load object in layout.

This is from the online help ...
NOTE:The Hub uses the networking protocol TCP/IP to move data between Modeler and Layout
Just in case you didn't know that. Good luck.

How do I know if my tcp/ip is enabled...does this mean something about internet?...hmmmm....If so..how do I enable it...and what do you mean by hub...this sounds more like a network thingy..:wip:

Hmm, I usually never say this to people, but PLEASE, do yourself a favour, and sit down and read a LOT of your manual.
Asking these types of questions about Modeler and Layout (like how do you get your model from the one to the other) are really, really basic, and you should have a basic grasp of these concepts before you even open the program and start mucking about :)
Basically what it comes down to is that LightWave is two programs - Modeler, and Layout. You do all your modelling and UV mapping and stuff in Modeler, and then take it into Layout for lighting, animating and rendering.

If LightWave loaded, it means it's working. If there is a problem with the Hub at all, neither Modeler nor Layout will load (they'll just kinda hang).
Incidently the Hub is just the little communication program between Modeler and Layout.
Sometimes though, for whatever bizarre reason, the Hub doesn't work 100% which is why Modeler won't always load when you click on the Modeler button.
I don't even work with the Hub running anymore because I don't ever use it.

You might be seeing this behavior because you are using the Discovery Edition of LightWave. I've noticed that when running in "demo" mode, the Hub does not load automatically and all of the references/pointers to it don't function. This is unfortunate, because it gives potential new users the impression that this functionality doesn't work.
When running the full version, the Hub will automatically load, regardless if you load Modeler or Layout and the two synchronize with one another. You can load objects or edit them and switching over to Layout will reflect these changes immediately. They are still technically two seperate tools, which might be unusual to someone who's only familiar with other 3D applications, but they are constantly communicating with one another. This has always worked perfectly for me.

LOL it often doesn't :p
In fact, sometimes the button isn't even there.

I wonder why it has always worked so well for me. I can definitely say that if I unplug my dongle and load up Modeler, the Hub doesn't load and the 3 options in the upper right 'Switch to Layout', 'Synchronize Layout' and 'Send Object to Layout' are all greyed out. Also, from within Layout the 'Modeler' button does nothing, just as actionfigure is experiencing.

I've never had that problem, but often I find that the Modeler button in Layout just isn't there. Not even grayed out. It's just gone.
If the modeler button doesn't show up the first time which alot of times it doesn't. I just close LW and reopen it then the modeler button comes up. After that I never have any problem with the Hub.

i never had probs to send a model from modeler to Layout at all even if I quite never used the modeler button in Layout. but the button is there , however.
@actionfigure : the best process in Lw is 1)model, create endomorphs surfaces . UV etc. 2) go in Layout, or send your saved obj to it from modeler and animate, light, render. this separation allows you to store objects as separate, while in Layout you save scene files. if you want to save updated objects, with textures, for example in layout then click save all objects.after saving your scene.
if you start from Layout and are new you can load some pre made objects in it (these you can find in your lw contents) so that you can start learning some animation.
you can work separately and load only Modeler or Layout too.

Hehe, I was just going to say that I've never experienced this but then I opened my LW and suprise suprise, they were grayed out :)
Restarting LW (both Modeler and Layout) helped, but still... :D
