Check out this cool new Maya tool that takes your animated cycle and deforms it onto a path.
It also creates a load of offset controls:

Looks cool.

Btw, 'quadraped' looks like 'quad raped'. You probably want to use 'quadruped' which is the correct word.

Hi Rob,

Have you seen the latest siggraph paper coming out of 2011 - 'Locomotion Skills for simulated Quadrapeds'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRthdBr46cs

Pretty fantastic simulation, using a physics method - push/pull, add forces, dynamic speed changes etc..

Hi Charles,

Might have missed something but simulation seems to only work in a straight line, would like to see how it looks if it did some tight cornering? body should bend along the path it takes. Very difficult to create this kind of movement, not with the quadruped path system though, one of the main reasons I created it.

On face value the simulation looks good but when you get down to it, the same old issues will arise.
The jumps would require a lot of reworking to the point of starting over.
And the gaits look a little shaky, they dont have a fluid feel, this is something that would take a
a lot of work to finesse. You would have to go through and finesse every step of each leg plus all the
body areas.

Simulations have been around for a while in games etc. The quality of the animation is variable, and would require heaps of cleanup.

The Quadruped path system uses refined animation cycles directly, there is no loss in quality. You can create a transition between two gaits using two path animations with refined cycles and blend them relatively easily. Because you dont lose the original quality of the cycle, there is less cleanup.
