Title: Jonas
Name: Zbynek Kysela
Country: Czech Republic
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush

Hi all!

Here's my last creation, my goal was to do a realistic portrait in 3d and trying to make him look alive.

I did it using Maya, Mental_ray Zbrush and I used shawe and haircut for the hairs.

Hope you like it.

Unbelievable. I think he's living in a perfect world. There's no spot in the skin. Color is uniform throughout the entire model. There's no stain in the shirt. The random lips texture looks unnatural. His eyes look very young. Maybe these are the reasons why it's not shown in the front page.

I second that, and find it unfair when people refer to skills concerning the ability to critique a picture. We all have eyes and know how reality looks like.

I agree with fantasizer especially about the eyes - personally i’m missing the wetness there many old eyes actually have. The piece is technically outstanding and simply stunning, but on the other hand not a picture i would hang up on my wall.

Can i make something like this? No not in a million years and it really is a terrific image, but the guy you are critiquing the reply is right in all words.

The OP will probably get a more valuable response from fantasizer's post than all the other praising posts.

Its an amazing work but it is not yet completely realistic, but an amazing work nevertheless, and if there would a be some DOF it could even mistaken some people that they were looking at a Portrait taken with a 85mm (or 50mm) 1.2/1.4 Lens :D

Whatever the other geniuses say, I thought it was a real photo, and even now when I look closer. It is probably the best cg face that I have ever seen since Benjamin Button. 100% real in my humble opinion.

I also like very much the mood of the picture, it's really like a driver's license / old man next door, which for my taste adds even more realism: the style of the picture goes very well with the style of your subject. Extraordinary!!! I think it's my favorite sculpting yet.

I welcome this kind of comment very much 'coz it gives me chance to defend. We all watch movies. Do you think we need to be able to create those shots in the movies before we're allowed to make comment? The answer is obvious. In this thread, I'm an audience. I comment in the point of view of an audience. I'm not asking the artist to allow my direction. This is very obvious if you read my comment carefully. I'm actually praising the artist.

Thank you for all your comments!

First of all, let me say that I am really pleased by all of them - the
positive as well as the negative ones, as they are strong motivation
for my future work.

@fantasizer: I appreciate and respect your opinion and I think you
certainly have a point in some regards. Even though I would like to
agree with what TimeBandit sayshttp://email.seznam.cz/img/smile/3.gif

Sometimes it is hard to swallow someone's critic but it is the only
way to improve our abilities and fulfil our talent. I know my work is
not faultless (and trust me, I see much more imperfections in it than
you do). Yet I am quite satisfied with the outcome in this particular
case.

Most of all, I think much of this CG Choice Award. For me it is
actually a big dream come true.

Concerning the 'How To' for Jonas - I will try to post some more
settings and material soon here. Although it is just the same old
routine you have seen a million times before.

you should take a closer look for there is age spots and you need to know more about ethnicity. why should there be a stain on a new shirt? and my grandfather has always been told he has sharp young eyes. hmmmm and it should be on the front page but then again they think they are professional when they really are not...sounds like high school socialism to me.....?

On close examiniation my only complaint for the most part would be the waxiness of the skin shader. It just feels barely off and with CG humans, that's all it takes. As well, his right forehead wrinkles come off way too sharp in my opinion. Nevertheless, this is fing sick awesome. I don't even want to know how many hours you dropped into this piece.

Wait, I got an idea! Why don't you try and make something that's half as good as this and then you will have the right to criticize him. Imperfection is fine but a stain on the shirt? No need for that. Does your every shirt have a stain? Well maybe since you sound like a hobo

I also would like to see a wireframe of it.

How long did that take to render? What are your specs on rendering this?

That is very VERY impressive.

As for animation, if it was animatible, I think it would be most accurate to animate it with motion tracking software unless you can capture every little detail in keying it by hand.
Animation adds a whole new dimension to the character (almost litterally) As real as it looks, average animation can rob the character of his realism and therefore bring us into that place we all know and love... uncanny valley. Now I'm not saying the creator is a bad animator or anything, just making a point.

Anyhow, great render. It's inspiring.

No one is perfectly symmetrical in this world or at least I haven't met the person. Imperfection is what makes people perfect when you look at it from the perspective of an artist. Symmetry is the gateway to the Uncanny Valley...

My grandmother is currently spending her final years in a nursing home. Naturally, pieces with elderly involved have a very dear spot in my heart because of this and I've spent a great deal of time in nursing homes over the last year so I thought I'd toss in my 2 cents.

Although many elderly have the foggy or wet eyes, horrible blotchy skin, and terrible complexion it just isn't always the case. So to be fair, I can't comment on whether the eyes are too "clean" or "clear" nor can I comment on whether the skin is too "waxy" or too "untouched by time". What I can comment on, and what I feel comfortable in conveying, is that I get a sense of personality from this photo. Although there is something I can't quite put my finger on that does tell me it's CG, it is still a very convincing and personal portrait. The uncanny valley may not be completely bridged here, but in my mind I can let that go because of genuine emotion I get viewing it. It's very close, definitely closer than most.

Also, I find that there is something almost endearing about the stance and pose. Having photographed the elderly on many occasions, I find that more often than not they get a little stiff and straight on for photos. It's something that I related to the moment I saw this picture. It says "here I am, I'm too old to care" in a loving way.

Reminded me a great deal of how my grandfather tends to pose for pictures.

Good work, and I can't wait to see more from you. Award well deserved.

This is really amazing, the fabric is incredible, I love the asymmetry, textures and shaders are incredible. I have two critiques (although I admit I couldn't create anything as amazing as this).
1. The right eyebrow (his left) some of the hairs don't look like they're actually in the skin, they just seem to be floating on top.
2. The left eye (his right)... the pupil doesn't seem dark enough, and they eyes could be a bit more wet.

but I am seriously impressed nonetheless.

this is the one of the best (hyper realism) 3d portraits I've ever seen.
