Hi there, so I've started using VRay at work recently, and we're on Mac Pro's, Let me start by saying i dont know if this is a mac specific issue or general, but It's so insane it seems to me it has to be just mac or there would be many other topics to be found..

its quite simpel really..

1)
I model a simple object.. light it etc.. hit render.. takes 3 seconds to render.. great

2)
hit 3 on my keyboard to smooth it.. and do Either the Render Globals - Render Viewport Subdevisions or select the object - Attributes - VRay - Subdevisions (both methods causes same issue)
hit render again, Now, it will not render it in the viewport if theres the slightest detail in the object, and if it does render, it literally makes the render time go up by 100 times..

3)
I take the same object - go to Mesh - Smooth, and manually smooth the object by 2x or whatever.. hit render again... 3 second render..

can someone help me understand this please? the workflow Cannnnot be having to dublicate your object and hide a version every time you want look at a smoothed render of something.. i refuse to believe that..

thanks for reading.
Adam

A lot of people assume it's a problem with the Mac when actually the Mac is faster for rendering most of the time:

As you can see from my tests, V-Ray is about the same but a bit faster on OS X. What you're seeing is probably V-Ray's slow dynamic subdivisions. I did a post about this here:

i JUST stumbled across a topic on the Chaos Group website..
turns out its a mix of 2 things - by default theres no memory allocated for rendering smoothed geo (a puny 500mb) and secondary and more importantly .. the smooth 'rate' is set to 256 times O_o which i guess would be equal to applying 256 x1 mesh smooth's to your geo.. which seems redicilous as a default? .. i set it to 4 and it renders in 3 seconds. just as fast as Mental Ray used to

thanks for the quick reply.. tho!
