Title: Close Up portraits
Name: David Moratilla Amago
Country: España
Software: BodyPaint, Maya, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush

Hello guys,

This is my latest work, it´s a serie of close up portraits of a woman.
My idea was to create a natural and realistic portrait, with a photographic approach in a low key lighning conditions.
I wanted to create only one image, but I made many tests with the lightning, camera angles, hairstyles, color, BW and I wasn´t sure wich one was the best, so I deciced to go with different images.

Here is a description of the process:
Base modelling in maya, texturing in photoshop/Bodypaint (I used photos from “Essence the face” as the base to create the texture of the face). Zbrush for refine modelling and detailing skin. Hair with “shave and haircut” and “shaders_p, hair_TK” for the shader of the hair. Fur is “maya fur”.
Rendered with mental ray, and photoshop for final compositing.

Dude, your work is simply amazing.
It is without doubt the best I saw in a long time. very profecional, nearly perfect.
Just love it. especially the first picture, by the way, reminds me of someone special to me.
Great job, congratulations!

This is probably the most realistic CG face I've ever seen. The level of detail is just amazing.

Congratulations on an incredible piece of art! :applause:

Incredible photorealism, all the subtle imperfections like the blood shoots in the eyes and and blemishes on the skin add so much to the realism, not to mention the excellent use of lighting. Nicely done!

Awesome.
The first render (b&w) is perfect, imho, but the jaw line looks somehow blurred, giving a furry feeling a little bit out of place. This is even worse in the third render (b&w). Also, the second render (color) appear pixelated on my screen (a prof 1920x1200): have you reduced the image size a lot, or used a low quality jpeg to keep into posting size?
Your work is one of the best photo realistic portraits I've see so far, and I see that your modeling flow is very good.

Wow, stunning realism! Greatly done skin and a lovely face! Partially rather hairy (like chin and tip of the nose) and nostrils look a bit simply modeled, but all in all one of the most realistic portraits. Excellent!

I added DOF blur in postpro. Yes, maybe it´s a little exagerated in that zone. Regarding the pixelated effect, it may be because of the jpg compression, a noise layer that i added to reduce the cg appearance, and the digimarc watermark.

The bump map feels a touch too much, and maybe a little sharp, especially around the lips. I'd say the shadows are also a little too high contrast, would be nice to see perhaps a rim light on the shade side. But otherwise a very nice rendering.

The shader of the tearline is a normal transparent blinn with the diffuse color to 0. I made different tests and with this was ok.
I think that the key here is that the window reflected is a hdr texture, mapped on an environent sphere. This gives you reflection only in the areas with more light.

Dude, the best philosophical comment about 3D hyperrealism so far...

Totally agree with you guys. In this zbrush screenshot you can see the final geometry of the model. With this I generated a normal map that is applied in maya to the hi-res geometry.

http://www.davidmoratilla.com/images/ZbrushHiresDetail.jpg

As you can see, it´s not a perfect geometry, I spent some time “breaking” the original 3D geometry. This details are not so much visible at the final renders (depends on the lightning, sss shading, etc) but they are still there, and I think that gives an extra point.
Also, I think that fur is also essential to give a real appearance to all organic 3D renders.

Hi guys, again thank you very much for the comments :)

fantastic man! some rendering tips please, did you render it by one shot, or passes? and the hair also.

I made different render layer and passes, in order to have more control in postpro. I made passes for hair, fur, eyelashes, eyebrowns, eyes, specular, reflections..
I also descomposed the sss shader. I configured the shader to render only diffuse, epidermal, subdermal, back, and the merge in photoshop with screen blending mode. This is the same that modifying the weight values in the shader, but with more control and in less testing time.

You mentioned you used Shave and a Hair Cut for the hair and then Maya fur. What exactly did you use the maya fur for? And what did you use Shave and a hair cut for specifically?

I used maya fur for only for the facial hair. Shave and haircut was used for the hair.

Ah, mistaking me for the rookie. This is going to be fun :)

Check this list:

- the irises are too big, a very common beginner's mistake when modeling an eye system
- the face is (too) symmetrical which makes it far from realistic (in real life NO faces are symmetrical or too symmetrical)
- the peach fuzz is completely missing which gives the skin a harsh look in some areas
- the reflection in the eyewhite is too smooth/clean (that part of the eye is a bit rough as opposed to the lens which is smooth)
- the teeth look like plastic halloween glue-ons
- the face has no expression whatsoever and a young woman's skin is probably the easiest (=least difficult) of all (which makes this entry not suitable for this gallery when compared with far more challenging entries)

Furthermore, I thought I had seen this model at the Daz3D store, but now after reading the accompanying text I now see that this model is based on Ballistic's Essence the face of which I have a copy and the dvd at my office.

So this guy didn't even create the textures him self. Yes, those birthmarks on here nose, her cheek and the masked pimple on her chin are right off the photo, taken by someone else, no texture painting there.

Of course it's a common habit to use other people's photos/textures, but if it's the main event in your render and it's not your art, then your render certainly doesn't belong in this gallery.

And by the way, Ballistic is closely linked to CGSociety. Maybe even some co-writers of this Essence book are on the CGSociety's jury?

So what message is this: buy our book, do our tutorial and we'll publish your first attempt in our prestigious cg choice gallery? Conflicting interests can't be right?

No, this following character raised the bar some time ago, and hasn't found its match yet:

http://features.cgsociety.org/newgallerycrits/g34/30534/30534_1274821510_large.jpg

Now that is a character that has charisma and the artist has a deep understanding of the V-ray shading system so that he doesn't need to mask shader errors with black and white.

Johnz250, I think I can say that you are the one who should do a lot more studying and looking at 3D models and especially photos. And maybe after dealing with photorealistic 3D for more than 6 years like me you can see what I can see today. Until then a little modesty would be nice ;)

And for everyone who can't distinguish this eye system from a photograph, well... you're still an innocent beginner (no offense). Take a look at the Essence's dvd photos and maybe then you'll see what I mean. I didn't learn much from that book, but I'm sure you will pick up lots of good stuff: http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/books/essence/face/ (don't buy just the book, the good stuff is on the dvd)

That said, this render is okay, but that's just all.

Hi¡

fernando749845: I really don´t understand why you are so anger.

I created the texture from those photos and I said it. whats the problem using photos?? Should I had taken the photos myself??
I paid for that dvd and I think that i can use that photos for my works in the way that I want..
Other people pay for 3dsk or any other texture site, or pay for a plugin, or any other thing . I think there is not problem with that.

Of course no daz3D here, I would had said that

Thanks all¡

1st reach that standard so you know what you are going to talk about

Thank you very much for the support¡

What is your technique for doing the "peach fuzz?" It really adds to the amount of realism to this image
I think is a combination of the sss shader, the lightning and the fur.
There is only one light in the scene, and I think that makes the fur more visible in the "penumbra" areas.
The fur itself has nothing special. Only different orientations, leghts and width, depending on the areas.

Any tips for setting up/rendering hair with shave and haircut? Would totally appreciate sharing your knowledge. Cheers!
By the way do you have, or know of a great hair tutorial like in your work here? Hair is something I have yet to learn..
I will try to explain the technique I used for the hair. I am not a hair expert, this is the first time I play with hairs. Maybe there are better ways to create this, but this is what i found the best.

There are two parts, the generation and the shading:

For the geometry generation, I made many tests to create the haircut that I wanted, and was so painful. The best I found, was shave and haircut, using nurbs curves to create the hair (Something like a loft, but with hairs). With this method I could control the style of the hairs. For that, select 2 or more curves, create the hair and select “Interpolate Guides”.
I created different hair systems to give some variety. If you only create only one, it looks very “smooth”.

http://www.davidmoratilla.com/images/HairGeneration.jpg

Note: This geometry is the collision mesh that I used for the hair. The ears are smoothed to avoid problems with the hair dynamic simulation.

For the shader, I used “shaders_p” hair system. I tested different shaders and this was the one that gave me the best results.

It´s availabe here:
http://www.puppet.tfdv.com/download/shaders_p_e.shtml

For using that shader instead of the shave and harcut one, you have to uncheck “OverrideGeomShader”. Then you can apply the shader that you want to the hair system.

Here is a good tutorial using that shader system:
http://www.djx.com.au/blog/2009/04/14/p_hairtk-p_hairtk_shadow-p_shader_replacer/

Again, I made different shaders to give some variations (mainly in the position of the specular)

Thanks¡

Thanks a lot for the precious explanations AND links !
I discovered your picture this monday morning on It's Art forum. First i got impressed. Then i got angry. Then i fired up Maya and spent the whole day working on SSS. And it's far from a success, well, anyway xD

Took me a while to find the fur on you model... hey it's here, on the left corner ! ok very subtle.

I believe you when you say it's painful to make hairs... i already spent weeks on Shave & Haircut so i know EXACTLY what you're talking about ^^;
But I never used those special shaders you talked about, so now i have a new goal in life coz i love hairs :buttrock: , thanks

nice texturing !
what is rigging for ? as shown in your reel, i would have expected a few rendered expressions..
why not to render your character ??? is there something wrong with 3d designing ?

Firstly, our eyeballs are not perfectly spherical. It should have a light bumpmap / displacement map as well. Second of all, the cornea sticks out a little, like an island.

As for our eyelids, most often both our eyes aren't equally evenly open. Check the mirror if you don't believe me :) in this photo you'll see what I mean. There's almost ALWAYS a subtle difference. I think it adds to the sense of realism through our real-life imperfections :)

Thak you guys¡ :)

tajfx: The girl of the reel is a different project. I made that in 2006.
This close up portraits are a completely new project, only for stills at the moment..

Geronimous: Yes, I know that. I searched for information about the anatomy of the eyes. Indeed, I paid special atention to them because I think the eyes are almost the most important part of a portrait, it´s the first thing that you look at. I am very proud of the final result, and would make it like that again :)

Regarding the other question, i modelled in zbrush without simmetry. And in maya I adjusted the skin to the position of the cornea on each pose, so each eye has a different shape.
Maybe all this is not appreciable, but it is there..

Anyway, thanks for the info.

Thanks so much for the making-of! I got a lot out of it, especially from the parts about texture layers. You placed all of those eyebrow and eyelash hairs manually.... wow.

Really appealing renders. They look like real fotos out of a studio. I also find black and white sometimes more expressive than colour for faces, that's why I like the two BW renders.

Hey David can i ask you about the total haircount for each hairstyle, like, maybe 200 000 hairs or less ?
(with Shave & H. i use generally about 400 000 for animal fur i think)

Still can't get those p_shaders to work, i dunno what i'm doing wrong :\

Thank you really much... oh... wtf... let´s go in spanish!!!

Gracias David!

Really useful the making off and also great lightning study. I really like it and is one of the best portraits I've ever seen. I'll take them as inspiration for future projects.

This is amazin' man...you're def an inspiration....I think the thing that make this seem so real is the fact that you added the fur on the face (the lil hairs all over the face) def makes it more believable....stop by my link I'd really appreciate any feedback you can give.....http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=7089160#post7089160....
thanks! def added you to the favs...

Incredible! In my opinion there's nothing in your renders which would give it away as a CG Image. Great making of as well. How much time did you invest in this project if I may ask?

I really don't know. I made this project on different stages, but I would say around 3 months working on spare time.

Thanks!

This might very well be the best renders I've seen of this type.
Maybe one day I'll be able to produce something this serious. A few more years of intense practice, then maybe...

Incredible.

the pictures are amazing, truely stunning work, one small comment if i may? on the first picture the terminater line of the light under the nose and around the mouth seems uncomfortable, and the second pic , theres something to the left eye of the model, it seems off. sorry to nitpick. All in all amazing work.
