Enrique Gato 10-28-2003, 09:39 AM Hi there!!
Long time since I didn't post here. How's life? :D
I want to show you my last animation short based on a spanish comic character (the best one for me). Tell me what you think about it.
Low quality (17 Mb) (http://www.3dluvr.com/gato/videos/superlopez_divx5_320x174.avi) (left click, wait for popup, and rightclick and save the new link on the popup)
High quality (Mirror 1 - 33 Mb) (http://personales.ya.com/nanosky3d/gato/superlopez_divx5_400x216.avi) (just leftclick or rightclick and "save target as")

Hey Lildragon, I'd like to ask you something. What happened to the animations section in the gallery? I can't find it.

hehe very cool, great style. However it'd be perfect without the white flash on the transition from the comics book to the animation. Don't think that would be too difficult.
That's really everything I can come up with, it's just great

Top Notch work Enrique!
Amazing! GREAT animation, funny all the way through! The style reminds me of the Clever & Smart comics (can't remember the authors). I love the way he gets smacked into the wall with the garbage bin following up, then emerging with two bumps on his head, LOL!
Great work

Great Jan 3d,well i think super is more short, and more curves on his body.
And Robot i think havent same design.
Wiro,in spain clever and smart named mortadelo y filemon and have a real movie.Francisco Ibanez is the autor.
sorry mine english.

Naranjas! Joer que recuerdos.
RMortis: thanks! It just went up for me that Super Lopez is also a comic from the same guys. Great repro of the style in this short!
It would be appreciated if you folks could reply in English though, just to let other people in on the crits too.

I really like the way you use the thought bubbles in this piece. Very well done!
The transformation of the robot and the camera work are very nice as well. The weight and motion of the characters is very solid as well.
I could watch Super Lopez fight robots all day long!!

I really *REALLY* look forward to more episodes, now THIS
is what can be done with 3d animation, FUN beliveable FUN!
Excellent job, the expressions are great, the timing is good
and man...If I go on, I'm probably going to do that thing that
"dogs do to legs" you know so I better shut up now
I'd subscribe to an animation series like this, it's 10 times better
than reading the comic book itself!

Finally you get a very nice piece. It really reminds me of the feeling of the comic. The animation is so good and the camera. I like a lot the intro in the room and the final. In this way the shot get more consistence I think...

I'm normally against fanboy posts, but when the product is this good, what else can you do?
Every bit of it was entertaining!
I especially liked the thought balloon treatment.
The care in handling the dynamics was especially well done, too.
The hero's walk was perfect. Very lifelike and believable.
Congratulations on such a wonderful job!

Nothing to crit. Very funny and very POWERFUL! Guess it is the combo of that awesome soundfx and editing and great animation (you know what you are doing, that is clear!). I really felt the punches and flights and drops in my stomache. Great camera-animation and cool composing in general.

Clever & Smart (Mortadelo y Filemón) is a spanish comic too, like Super López. But is not the same author. Francisco Ibañez is the author of the first one, and Juan López Fernández aka "JAN" is the author of the second one. It´s a pitty that Clever & Smart is more well known around the world. Here, in Spain, Super López is better considered by comic readers, due to his higher quality in art & stories. Ther are a lot of people waiting for a movie from long time ago.... me too.
BTW, Gato, tío siempre he flipado contigo, pero ahora has dejado un listón muy alto por aquí.... Voy a mandarle el link a Jesús Iglesias, si no te importa.... (para que llore).

Hey, thanks everybody for all this nice feedback!!
I'll drop some general information about the short in order to answer all your questions:
- The 3D software used was 3D Studio Max 5.1
- All the short has been finished in about 4 months in my spare time.
- If somebody wonders about the animation of the cape, well it's handmade animation, no physics.
- All the sound and music was also edited by me.
- It was rendered on a PentiumIV 2900 MHz, with 1Gb of Ram, 160 Gb Hd.
- Each frame had a render time of about 22 seconds average (very low as you can see, I had the scene very optimized).

it is simple, but it doesnt look simple, which is great.
the best thing about this short in my opinion is the camera motion/complements on the animation.. it was very dynamic.
really good work on that one, and that is a very tough job as well to get an interesting/pleasing result.
btw, olijosman .. you are great man, very funny ;)

IDMAX you also have to realize that not everybody speaks english. In most cases they have replied in both languages. I, personnaly, find it hard, specially with a topic like Super Lopez that's so dear to most spaniards, not to make some sort of comment in spanish - it's just natural.

I repeat that the whole story of the short is based on a comic character that exist since 1973, and I'm just making a short about that character, who is a parody of Superman. And I also repeat that this is just a tribute to Superlópez, why do you think this isn't a work that I can't feel satisfied for?
Of course I like creating my own characters, but this is just another way to create stories.

great short!
cool look you have going on here & some really good animation. i like the thought bubbles alot too-- although i only understand some of it --- (pourquito espanol para me!) but i really like the concept.
one thing i might suggest-- is that maybe push your animation even faster in one or two places--- like in comics how sometimes the character flies and all you see is a blurred streak-- or some stars fly off when there is a POW or KICK-- i guess what i am saying is it might be really cool to see some really graphic symbols in some places--- making it more cartoony and comic book-like. I think this would be really fun and fit the look you have going on well. it would also contrast with a couple of the slower parts-- like when he pulls himself out of the wall.
i really enjoyed it.

Hi!
I´m a very fan of Súper López (I translated the entire comic "Los petisos carambanales y otras petisoperías", wich is a hard work man!).
But I´d stay the camera sticked.
All your anim is made from one shoot only, I´d made cuts and stay the camera stopped, it´d be more "comicish", you know...
You have made a good work anyway.

Well, I supose this is just another way to plan the scene. I'd probably like that camera setup that you say, but the way I made it was the best one I found when I did the short. Nice crit anyway.

Congratulations, that's all I can say, Enrique.
Amazing piece of work. Loved the shot where he jumps on the robot in anger and throws it away... stunning. Nice choice on the music too.
Animation looks real good, I wish it had been slightly snappier and maybe faster in certain moments, but i'm just being picky, i know. Great work on the cape too. It's fun to see how nicely you've achieved some of the original character's expressions, like the one with the finger in his mouth, really neat.
oh, forgot to say I'm a SL fan too, I've got (almost) all of his comics. I think you should tell JAN about this short, he'd love to see it, that's for sure!
