View Full Version : Optimizing maya
stykkz 10-28-2003, 07:03 AM Hi!
Since i am quite the nOOb on maya, i could really need som help with optimizing the production from within maya!
My comp specs aint to impressive and maya seems to agree!
I was just wondering what i can do to speed maya up some, when im in SubD mode and trying to do the UV maps it takes uhm... forever just to do one move...
Please if anyone has any links of some sort with tweek tips for maya... send em here!
Thanks!

Hi buddy,
First you should know that subds are slow in general in comparison to polys and nurbs.
There are a lot of things you can do to uptimize your scene, some I mention:
-- go to file/optimize scene and option window: from here you have a wide variety of options to check.
-- The subd problem that you have depends very much on your system, if you have a below-average system you can't really do something very drastic about it. but as a tip you can do your UV mapping on your polygon model then after finishing you can give it to your subd.
You see, there are always workarounds on problems to avoid the speed issue.
-- Use the different display res option (via the number keys from 1 to 7, to simplify the model in display which speeds up the scene refresh.
-- Always try to UV map on a simpler model then go to details.
-- If you are going to animate a subd character, use wrap deformer and replace the actual model with a very simple polygon, this way you avoid the speed problem.
-- use delete history on objects to clean up more memory if you're sure about the temporary conditions of your scene.
-- In animation use delete static channels from edit/delete by type.
-- Work on different layers for example put the whole stage on one layer, then characters and props on separate layers, this way you will turn off layers you don't want at the moment and again will gain more speed.
And GOD JUL in advance, I live in Sweden but ain't swed.
Take care
Good Luck
