i have, like in the beginning, how you use that free model to get that distinctive fg look, that's what i want to achieve, and your tutorial doesn't really get to that point, unless it's been updated

Hehe ok,

Well to get that effect in the first image all you need to do is change your environment colour to blue (or whatever), turn of the default lighting (or create a light and set its intensity to 0) and turn on FG in the Render Globals!

Thats it!

i did, and it didn't do that

i'll try again, and post my image if it's successful

i think i found out the problem

i've been using connect poly shape, and when it converts to sub-d's, the only color it can really be is gray, so maybe if i jsut normally smooth it...

Heres a few of the most important things to consider when using fg with mental ray .... Its a very basic vid tutorial lightly touching some of the basics with fg .... im also a noob why not do a vid of another rendering techinique, or the same technique with other features that I havent looked into and post it for me

http://www.dirkusrhombas.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/rendertest.avi

Ok things to consider

1) vid is encoded in xvid codec, download it its free

2) I made the vid with camstudio http://download.com.com/3000-2194-10067101.html .... best way to learn is to be shown imho

3) I would like to see more people making vids like this one... just imagine how much faster we will learn if we all help each other.

Thats the whole point of this community and with so many people on high bandwidth we can really begin to utilise vid tuts ... they dont have to be major, this one took me 20 minutes to do and ive shown you what I found to be the most important sections to look at when using M R

4)There is a lot of loss on the vid and is prob not the best video if you dont know how to open the atribute editor or know your way around the render globals.

5) My aim was to show you some of the most used sectors within maya for this technique and let you fiddle about with them to improve and change the look :)

Let me know what you think

ps make more videos !

Maybe you could try surrounding your object with a large sphere in the colour you would like to project onto your model. Like somebody else said, a reference shot would be good.

sorry, i haven't been able to get on the internet, and i h aven't been able to see the video that dirkusrhombas made, because of a virus from kazaa

anyhoo, after i fix my computer, i'll be sure to make some reference images, and try out some of the methods a little more

thx for the support
