Hi people. I am re-posting my first demo reel and I wanted to share with you guys.
I was told that the sound had some major problems, so I recompressed it.
Some notes about: I used Animation:Master and ElectricImage for all of the content.
Where ever you see the bald headed policeman(P.O. McKnuckles) I used a technique where I animated him in Animation:Master and layered it onto the backgrounds which were animated in ElectricImage. One of the shots has some extreme camera movemnt which was a test for the technique.
Okay, thanks for your time.Llet me know what you think

Hey Mike,

Just saw your demo reel, you wanted crits?

Ok, first off, find a better audio clip of the barb wire thing.
(aka, "Don't call me babe") Sounds very Amateurish.

Secondly, I totally agree with the run cycle. Too long, and his falling. Don't really need that in there, unless you make it more animatable (Arms flinging around...etc.)

The F-18A could be change a little bit, like have it do a barrel roll, or something to make it more interesting. Even have like an island out somewhere and you see the airplane come down to do a strike on it. Just something.

And the credits, well, you don't need them, like seriously, we know it's YOUR demo reel. We don't need to see; Mike this and Mike that! But I would put down where you got the F-18A model FOR SURE! What software, and contact info. That's it!

Be super careful about the music, did you have queen's permission to use that music? Did you have the permission from the record producers to use that music from flash gordon?

That's one thing you absolutley need to be careful about! Don't forget that stuff is copyrighted! So tip toe around that mine field!

When I was told about using copyrighted music in my demo reel at college they BLEW UP! So just becareful!

Find stock music! Stock music makes the world go around! (SERIOUSLY!)

But I hope I helped a little bit!

Keep up the good work and if you do any changes to it drop it in!

Unless you are directly selling your demoreel with unliscensed (sp?) music you should be ok on your reel. Unless you send it to fifty billion people. I was woried about this as well. It is hot territory and if you send it off to the wrong person on a bad day you could get into some trouble.

So where do you find music? I have no idea where to find stock music. maybe AndrewE can help us out. I would prefer to put some low key music on my reel, something that doesn't distract from the visual side.

If I ever get a reel together... Good work 3Dartz Lookin good!

Hi Andrew, thanks for the feedback. All things that I will look into before I start sending this out. I just don't know how much I can actually go and change at this point. But I will def. look into the music issue.
UnCon - thanks for the reply and comments. It took me a long time to just get myself together enough to even start to put a demo together.
The next one I do will be a short story rather than just collage of different animations.
Thanks for the feedback guys!

One thing that is making the whole thing bad is the music. Queen is great rockband but it does not belong in your demo. Another thing: Try making a red thread. Your demo doesnt give me that real feeling: WOW. Sorry for the comment but one good thing is your spidey model. That rocks.

Here are my suggestions:

The plane scene definitely needs some action...do a barrel roll and a couple other interesting moves (make sure the right parts of the plane move while turning), and have the plane turn towards the camera and fly by real fast...or shoot a missle directly at the camera (to transition to the next animation).

The scene where you are making the cop from the model...I would make the beginning before the base model comes in a lot shorter...just show the scene to establish the shot, then show the panels with the front and side views of the character, then have the simple model come in and the rest happens where the model gets chiseled and starts to move.

The part where the cop is running through the hallway needs to be shorter also...only have him jump a couple of the beams and exagerate the movement a lot more. When he jumps, either have him move back and forth a bit, with his arms and legs moving around a lot more then they do now or have him doing some cool spins and stuff while he is decending. Then have the landing be a bit more violent and actionpacked.

You have a good start on everything, but it all needs more movement and action...especially since they all have a bit of cartoon quality to them.
