giantrobot 06-06-2002, 05:41 AM hi all-
a few months ago i read about, found, installed and used these great tools for maya that let you append to polys really ealily and then view the me smoothed, mirrored, etc. it was a really great toolset that someone made, but i can not remember what they were called or where to get them. can someone post a link or a name if you know what i am talking about?
i remember there were great icons and a big tool window that accompanied it.
thanks in advance.

I have taken the liberty of editing the latest version of ConnectPolyShape so that it is compatible with Maya 3.5.1 on OSX. You can get this, complete with special installation instructions from my site: http://homepage.mac.com/julianlove/FileSharing3.html
Dirk is aware of the OSX compatibility issues (they are all minor GUI problems) and informed me that they would be built into the next version that is due for the 4.5 release.

ok, that didnt work. for some reason it was telling me that i was missing a bunch of stuff.
i put the old cps stuff back and now i have that same limited functionality.
is there a way to access the TOOLBOX functions without using that panel (which isnt working). i cant find the tools anywhere else.
thanks

If you install it all according to the manual, you won't get any messages about missing files or errors. The proper procedure being to install the LATEST version of CPS from Dirk's site and then into install the OSX files. With this there are still some parts that cannot function in the OSX version, like the HUD. But all the important tools and switches should be good to go.

i think that the big issue that i am having is that the path that you list in your readme does not exist on my Titanium. all of the maya files are in this obscure hidden path (which i can only see by using Tinkertool to show hidden folders.
i have no path that is users/giantrobot/...
did i somehow install wrong?
also, even if i only get the originals working in the longrun, do you know how i can access the tools in a way other than the shelf Tools button. when i click that, i get an empty panel.
thanks again

If you are running OSX. you must have a /Users/userName/ folder.
There are two directories where Maya stores it's parts: the "package" directory where the app, the docs and built-in scripts reside and the user's Library directory where the prefs, icons, marking menus, scripts, etc... are stored.
The package directory isn't hidden. It's actually the Maya app. This is a special kind of folder that appears like an app that you can 2click and launch but is, in fact, a folder. This allows applications that require many complex parts that are largely of no concern to most users to appear a one simple icon. Right clicking the Maya app will yield a Show Package option. Choosing that will open the Maya package folder. But this isn't where your scripts should be going anyway.
Your own Library folder is where this stuff belongs and it's those folders to which I refer. Your user folder is also the location that you go to when you click on the Home icon in the Finder and is also contains your Desktop folder. In fact, TinkerTool is itself located within your Users folder. So it must exist. :)

so, i was about to send you a "when you are right, you re right" letter...because your new directory info helped. there was in fact a folder there that seemed right.
the weird thing is that i have multiple maya /scripts folders in different places on my machine. one where you said, and others in hidden places.
anyway, i installed exactly as you said, and i got a big window after the last step that said things like:
the following mel scripts are missing:
cpsSetFaceLimit.mel
cpsLib.mel
cpsInstallMenu.mel
please make sure to to copy files to this location:
MEL:
/private/var/root/library/preferences/aliaswavefront/maya/3.5/scripts/
etc...
i dont get it? what could be wrong?

in addition to my last email...
there are even the 3 original shelf icons for cps there...but it says in the red error line that it can not find cpslib.met for source statement.
now i cant get either the new or old version to work.:thumbsdow
ugh.
any ideas?

Reinstall it. Follow the instructions in my docs from the start. Skip no steps. If you've installed any of this stuff in Maya's package scripts folder, remove those scripts.

when i use all of the old files, but your Toolbox file, i still cant use the toolbox, but i can edit it and see allof the tools that are supposed to be there (ext. face, convert selection , etc)
can i move these somewhere, or access them elsewhere?

The toolbox window doesn't work on the Mac version. This is normal for now. But there isn't anything in the toolbox that doesn't exist in Maya's Edit Polygon menu anyway.

Oops! I spoke too soon. A new version of the OSX port of CPS is now available at my site with what should be a properly working Toolbox window!:D
