View Full Version : Animation : The Annoying Thing
10-27-2003, 11:27 AM
I have just finnished this little animation with a character I made a while back. The anim is based on a strange soundfile that has been cruizing around the web for quite some time, and I found it was inviting to do something with it.
Unfortunately I have no idea who the mad guy behind it is, so I can´t give him credit (I assume it is a he). If he or anyone familiar with the guy should happen to see this; PLEASE COMETH FORTH! :D
The music is simply the ugliest piece of sound I could find on my drive (no offence Bodenständig 2000, I think you guys are cool anyway), and put there mainly to avoid too much silence.
The animation files are here:
annoying AVI | 480 x 384 | 7,25 MB (http://www.blodbad.nu/chagidiel/the_annoying_thing_480x384.avi)
annoying MPG | 480 x 384 | 8,3 MB (http://www.turboforce3d.com/bilder/annoying/the_annoying_thing_480x384.mpg)
Window-users right-click and "save target as".
The AVI is better in quiality but requires DivX-codec 5.0.3 or later.
Enjoy! And please give me a word on it. C&C allways welcome. :wavey:
Ahahah, that's far from annoying :P
Great work!
10-27-2003, 11:52 AM
:) that's great
10-27-2003, 12:09 PM

So damned cool!
10-27-2003, 12:14 PM
Great work, a very lifelike piece of animation with great lip sync. The best thing I've seen done with that sample to date!
10-27-2003, 12:18 PM
 nice job, excellent job on the motions and lipsynching
10-27-2003, 12:20 PM
The funniest thing of this year for me :buttrock:
I really LOL at the end with that smoke...
The face expressions are the best I've seen for long time :buttrock:
Same thing for the personnality :buttrock:
You deleted all the previous movies I've seen, and rised the bar above again.
Congratulations, nothing more to say.
...5 Stars (and hopefully the front page) :buttrock:
10-27-2003, 12:54 PM
hehe that was COOOL!
Love the smoke!
And good to see another swede in here aswell!!!
10-27-2003, 01:02 PM
Oboy! Thanks alot all!
Forgot to mention that it is made with Lightwave 7.5.
@ Frank Dodd: "The best thing I've seen done with that sample to date!" --- Does this mean someone beat me to this? :) Where can I see other stuff with this sound?
the smoke!!!!!!!!!!! roflmao :wip:
10-27-2003, 02:56 PM
Nice and Clean!
Good animation, I love the music too!
10-27-2003, 03:03 PM

10-27-2003, 03:52 PM
Fantastic animation and great character!! :applause:
I really love what you did with the music and sound clips. Perfect!! 5 stars from me! Subtle and cool camera work, too.
I can't wait to see what else you do with the Annoying Thing, loads of potential there.
10-27-2003, 04:04 PM
HAHAHAHAHA AWESOME!!! [plugged]
10-27-2003, 04:09 PM

10-27-2003, 04:18 PM
That was completely unexpected and I love it. Great job on the synching too :D
Can't really think of anything to add :)
10-27-2003, 04:20 PM
it's imposible to give any negative comment for this one. funny as hell :)
Love your camera move
10-27-2003, 04:24 PM
I played this at work and everyone came running in wondering what it was. Had the volume a little to loud. Everyone loved it. I like how one pupil is smaller than the other.
10-27-2003, 04:26 PM
This is a great character! Two thumbs up. When do we get to see him in a movie?
10-27-2003, 04:28 PM
that was one hell of a takeoff in the smoke!!! :buttrock: :buttrock:
geezness, how the heck did u get the lipsync to go so well?! that is absolutely amazing!!! Lol, what would have added to the color is to give the smoke some extra "sound FX" if u know what i mean. :scream:
10-27-2003, 04:31 PM
Lol, excellent!! I heard that sound thing a while back. and yes it was annoying! Great interpretation
10-27-2003, 04:32 PM
Guess what??!!! i watched this for 20 times! no boring been detected!! :D
great work! Its short, funny, good motion, good lip sync good texture, good music and...... goood.... idea!!! :D
Great work on the lipsinc and every thing else, very funny
LOL x 100000000!!!!!!!
Ohhhh biy what was that. I dont post a lot of comments since I am still a newbie but this just made me cry
Thats funny as hell... just had everyone in the office appear saying 'wtf' ? ;)
10-27-2003, 04:47 PM
that is amazing...you have made the visuals for our national song here at transportation design in umeå "två taktaren"......
10-27-2003, 04:48 PM
that was too funny! Love the life in his eyes!
10-27-2003, 04:51 PM
love that guy and the smoke!!
and u sure need to find out the guy who did the sound for this.
gr8 job
10-27-2003, 04:56 PM
HAHA... thats great! Love the look, the textures and the lighting are great. The lip sync is perfect as well... only one thing that i thought look a bit weird was the fact that i was one shot. It might have been better to have a few different shot. IMO.
I would love to see more of this little guy.
P.s I thought the music was quite good!
In no uncertain terms - that is f*cking brilliant!
10-27-2003, 05:01 PM
wow.... i am now motivated to character animate again..
wow... speechless.. awesome deign, character, well thought out animation./... and everythin...
very believeable.. and funny as hell
10-27-2003, 05:10 PM
He he! Very cute and funny.
But um, whats up wit da penis? I mean, if you want him to be anatomically correct, thats great and all, but it um, it's kinda, um, not moving, which is kinda weird. It looks more like a giant wart.
Either animate it (for jiggle) :surprised: or get rid of it. <--my vote.
Okay, regardless, this was really funny, and nice animation!
10-27-2003, 05:15 PM
Oh man , this has to be the funniest thing I've seen for a while and deffinately the best use of that sound file ever.
I would love to more of this little guys antics for sure.
Great work Chagidiel
10-27-2003, 05:28 PM
Rofl! :surprised :applause:
I had heard that "annoying" car sound before, but u just made it hilarious, nice character, nice textures, nice animation, nice everything :)
10-27-2003, 05:56 PM
That's hilarious man
10-27-2003, 05:57 PM
That was great, really great. I personnally liked the one camera shot and as far as the little guys package. I dunno, when I had to take care of my little nephew he didn't "jiggle" a lot so I think it is ok. Of course, I also wondered why you included it but I'm not sure it truthfully detracts at all from the work.
10-27-2003, 06:00 PM
neat short! - everything has been already said....
I have no idea by whom the sound was created, but if it takes you closer to finding out, it is meant to imitate the sound of the Trabant (trabi) - probably you have never seen such car but you can still google it :)
pretty kool man...
reminds e some years [hours] ago......
10-27-2003, 06:05 PM
:buttrock: Love that character. Great animation:thumbsup:
Yeah, who made the voice?
10-27-2003, 06:21 PM
MUAHAHAHA. That animation is great! Short, but great!! :applause:
10-27-2003, 06:26 PM
HAHAHA... that was great. Very good lip-sync and motion too. I've laughed at that "insanity test" for a while now. Soo funny.
Here is the link to the original if anyone is curious.
10-27-2003, 06:28 PM
DengDeng (Insanity Test) by Geijn
Great to see that sound animated after so long :)
10-27-2003, 06:36 PM

Great animation throughout Loved the face expessions.
10-27-2003, 07:13 PM
I would check out hampsterdance.com for the sound effect, just to see if they had anything to do with it.... I know it went around some time ago and people somehow like to send that link around.
Great work by the way I watched it like ten times!
10-27-2003, 07:18 PM
That's histerical...great job. Keep it up...but for the sake of all things decent, get that boy some undies!
10-27-2003, 07:20 PM

I'm pretty sure that there was a racing game, might have been motorcycle something 2 (MotoGP 2?), where you could enter a code and have that sound instead of engine sounds. Not entirely sure of which game it was, but fairly sure that there was such a game :)
Still love the clip, a couple of hours later :D

you're sick man, sick i say!!
SO FUNYYY!!
10-27-2003, 08:59 PM
I think i liked this audio clip for the first 4 times.. then i totally hated it. After watching your animation I dont hate the audio anymore... And that is hard to do! Great piece. I think this shows that if you do something simple but really good with full detail it pays off. Great example!
10-27-2003, 09:04 PM
Ujujuj... riktigt kul! Förutom den smått genialiska ljudfilen och musiken :buttrock: så tyckte jag läppsynken och hela karaktärsanimeringen var mycket bra!
10-27-2003, 09:25 PM
Nicely done. I agree the lip sync is very nice. I also like the dynamic camera work and the lighting. The animation is good but I would eliminate the self-conscious "bum" scratch at the begining. Is seems forced.
10-27-2003, 09:49 PM
That was awesome, thatwas one of the most fun to watch aniamtions i have seen in a long time. great stuff.
10-27-2003, 10:37 PM
haha, bra jobbat, äntligen kom två-takts filen till nytta :D
10-27-2003, 10:39 PM
I just watched it 5 times in a row. Great stuff.
I couldn't stop laughing.Great work.
10-27-2003, 10:49 PM

good good stuff sir!!!!!!!:buttrock:
heres another link to that pesky car..
10-27-2003, 11:09 PM
pretty nice stuff
10-27-2003, 11:16 PM
That's is a pissa (aussie term for very funny) luv it.
10-27-2003, 11:40 PM
I think he´s called "Britt-Erik"... He has also done a terrible song about Bamse (Swedes will know of whom I speak) :). I don´t think anyone knows who "Britt-Erik" is, except himself (if his mind isn´t f*cked up by now).
By the way... really good looking creature you´ve made. The animation and lipsync is fantastic. :buttrock:
that is totally cool! I like the music too, it really fits the little guy. I think it would be cool if his "package" jiggled ;). The ending is the best part, I also like the reaction he makes during the backfire! Cool!:applause:
10-27-2003, 11:59 PM
das war... ich kann nicht laughing..it stoppen war sehr lustige... i-Liebe es erstaunlich..., das ich wünsche, daß ich etwas wie der tun könnte....did Sie nur Kino 4d benutzen

Hey Chagidiel. It is so fuuny clip. LOL
Nice job here.
10-28-2003, 03:27 AM
I like the fact that it's a very origional idea and the modelling of the mouth, teeth & overall structure is unique.
Keep up the good work.
10-28-2003, 03:40 AM
Can anybody tell me what can I study if I want to be a 3d modeler and animator.

10-28-2003, 08:04 AM
OBOY OBOY!!! :scream: OOBOY
I can´t express how overwhelmed I am with this response from all of you people. I went offline early last afternoon to work with other things... and to wake up to this... gosh!
Thank you all for all kind words, and thanks for the frontpage moddies.
It makes me feel very good that all of you seemed to like the lipsynch-work. As you might imagine it was kind of tough to work with that fast rattling sound :) but I personally never thaught I had it really right, and was worried people might find that disturbing and distracting from the rest of the anim. I finally decided to leave it when I realised I couldn´t get it any closer to perfect with 25fps. Reading all your positive comments on it is very encouraging and drops that angst from my mind.
I´ll try answering some posts individually soon.
Thanks again all!
That is some Pixar quality animation. :buttrock:
That was great. My wife even came to look at it and liked it and I usually have to coax her to look at anything I do. hehehe
Ha ha ha, so funny! Excellent work!!!
10-28-2003, 08:31 AM
......SIMPLY PERFECT STUFF...... YOU SHOULD APPLY FOR AN ANIMATOR JOB AT PIXAR, PDI, DISNEY.... YOU´RE ENOUGH GOOD FOR THESE COMPANIES.
IF YOU DO IT, WE WILL BE HAPPY TO SEE YOUR NAME IN THEIR CREDITS.
10-28-2003, 08:54 AM
love the small story and the humor in it
10-28-2003, 09:04 AM
very funny :D and good animation
10-28-2003, 09:19 AM
Geez... you are so many
- singularity2006 - Yes, I agree on the sound of the smoke. Have been thinking some about that, but when I finnished it I decided to go without since I didn´t want to "steal focus" from the voice-sample. Now, afterwords I think it wouldn´t have hurt. I´ll see if I get to change that. Thanks for your comments!
- _dan_ - Thanks! It´s funny how many people have heard that sound. Keep it playin!
- Harrad - That never occurred to me, that it could have been in several shots. It´s a cool idea, would have made a big difference. However... I think it gains some "amateurish" feel from this one shot, which I like. But if I had thaught of it when putting it together I would definately have tried it out. Thanks fory your comments.
- agreenster & Tellerve & d4rk - Hmm... yee, I had some discussions about this penis when pusting this as a WIP in the LW-forum. Original idea was to use soft body dynamics on the little thing, but I never got it to work good enough. Of course it would be better if it moved, but I think it fills it´s purpose as a detail as it is now too. I is a question worth the thinking though.
- dondo - I´ll have a look for that car :)
- visualboo & MrMoss - Thanks for those links, didn´t know about them. The range of search for the mysterious soundcreator is narrowing... (or widening?)
- blendertrout - I´ll check that out. I somehow think this is a one-man-late-night-madness-kind-of thing though.
- OrcOYoyo - thank you... and thanks to your girfriend too :)
- Frank Dodd - Thank you. I just saw some of those links posted here.
- urgaffel - That sounds like a very funny mod for a racing game!
- soulhill - I might agree on the scratch. I is of a little too poor quality (just picked it off the web), but it actually sounds better on the avi-version... if it perhaps was the mpg you viewed.
- Cageman - This is very interesting. Never heard of "Britt-Erik". hhmmm... Thanks for a very interesting clue, the best one yet!
- slack - There is a thread about CG-educations in the general discussions forum.
- js33 & Shin Chan Pu - Darn guys! Pixar... I wish! Thanks for that.
Everybody I am not mentioning... thank you too! I appreciate your words and response very much!
10-28-2003, 10:04 AM
Very nice character and animation!!! :applause:
Facial animation is the best I've seen in a long time.
Lets see more, NOW.
10-28-2003, 11:39 AM

10-28-2003, 02:00 PM
I love it! this is a great peace of work. My favourite touch is when the bike bikefires. Congrats:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:
10-28-2003, 02:10 PM
Give this guy an award.....!!!!!!!!!!
ITS GREAT WORK AND IF IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE I WOULD GIVE HIM AN AWARD.
So funny maaaan!!! You've just hit the nail on the head!!!
Actually the sound is a sound imitation of the "East German" car called Trabant. My parents used to have one, and it was pretty popular here in East Europe...mostly because we didn't have too many type of car to choose from. It's so funny, and those who had a car like this can recognise the tipical tone changings of the two-stroke engine (what Trabant has) during speed changing.
I've found a site in English!!!
Check the first mp3, and the small video (TV icon) for sure!
10-28-2003, 03:20 PM
I'm sure it can be any two-stroke engine imitation. Ive heard 3-wheelers and many a crotch-rocket have the same sound. Its actually a pretty accurate imitation!
10-28-2003, 03:42 PM
Man, your work is very fresh!!!
...and the lipsync is perfect.
10-28-2003, 04:21 PM
hahaah ahhha hhahaha hah ahahahahhahahaaaaaa!!!!
Although very well done... uffff
I can´t stop of laught.
hah ahhaah hah ahha aa a a !!!
10-28-2003, 04:28 PM
Once again, thanks for all the replies you keep sending. I read them all with pride and joy.
And thanks Krix for your awesome research!
Funny is that I always took for granted that it was a motorcycle that guy was immitating :D This animation would have turned out quite different if I knew about the Trabant.
This is so cool to learn about now! Love the real engine sound you linked. Must be a terrible car!
10-28-2003, 04:56 PM
It had myself and my work colleagues doubled over watching it.
10-28-2003, 05:09 PM
hhahahahahaa :) this is awesome work dude... wow you are crazy for real. I know the original movie, it's super crazy stuff and i'm hoping that you'll create some new animations whit the hoooondaa.....
:applause: great work...
Actally I'm not 100% sure and I agree with argeenster. It can be mostly any of the two-stroke engines. There was also a very popular bike called Simson, with a two-stroke engine. Has got the same typical sound.
I didn't even think about that it doesn't fit to the animation. It's perfect..sooo coool... I think I would imitate something similar like your character if I'm acting out something like that sound. And I grew up with Trabant...so that is not a problem at all!
Keep you in great work!!!!
10-28-2003, 05:37 PM
I've heard a similar sound effect in a Flash animation that makes fun of "Ricer" cars like Honda's with big wings and stuff (here in the US). I thought that is what it was from. But the guy acting like he's getting on a motorcycle fits the sound perfect.
10-28-2003, 06:09 PM
10-28-2003, 09:40 PM
funny stuff, but he could use some clothing. I like want you do with particles and animation.
10-28-2003, 10:34 PM
very good job man!
I saw several times, great animation.
10-28-2003, 10:48 PM
uahhh!!! awesome!! we have seen it at the studio with my guys at midnight and we have been laugthing so much. we've been crying of funny!!! (sorry for my english)
10-28-2003, 10:58 PM
10-28-2003, 10:59 PM
 That was the best!! did you get the audio from the flash movie w/ the honda? this one: http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=1418&link_name=VW+GIT+vs+Honda+Civic&my_url=http://eurotuned.com/multimedia/gti_vs_civic.htm
Oh my stomach hurts phahahaha! If you make a poster w/ him and like three renders under the title I'd buy it!!
10-28-2003, 11:23 PM
That was the funniest thing I have ever seen. LOL I still can't stop laughing.

10-29-2003, 12:54 AM
wow, that was really enjoyable work
excellent texturing,modeling,animation and lighting
10-29-2003, 11:21 AM
i love that , absoloutely great, i like the effect in the background, with the blurry boxes stacked up, very very cool.
i was just wondering how long it took you to complete that. it looks quite complex, but i dont know a lot about animation  and i would like to try my hand at it. also, how much experience do you have in this, and is it relatively easy ??
ps. sorry if someone has already asked this.
10-30-2003, 07:12 AM

:scream: Once again, thank you poeple! I love to read your comments on the thing.
- Rexxenexx - No, I did not get the sound from there, but it is obviously the same used :) I got the sound sent to me by a friend. . Funny little race there. Thanks for the link.
- random.hero - Thanks. I love to hear about the environment, since I was rather uncertain of whether I should have it or not in the end. Worried it would steal focus, but I think it gives a nice touch.
Hmm... difficult to say how long it took me. I worked on the animation on and off for a couple of weeks, and the model I had built before had taken me about one or two weeks to complete with textures and all.
I am not that experienced at animating actually, and I would say it is not relaively easy. Not for me yet anyway, but with more experience it would of course come easier. I see no reason you shouldn´t try your hand at it though. The only thing certain is that if you don´t; you will never learn anything about it.

That was awesome man! I d/l'ed this thing in the middle of my 3D animation class, and after playing it the first time, I had the entire class around my comp watching.

This is so funny and cool.
The thing that annoys me most is it's dick-like thing.
Critics about the sound: I'd fade the sound at the end to give a feeling that the thing actually moves away.

Yeah I remember this sound, it drove me mad - but not this time :)
Watch out Pixar !!
Absolutely brilliantly done.
Fantastic animation there, great attention to detail (like the helmet straps) and ultra precise lip-synching.
Funny as hell. :applause:
I can only feel for you because of how many times you must have had to listen to that annoying noise while making this animation.
But the result was worth it :)
