I think this is coming along quite nicely. I like the amount of detail that you are putting in! Keep it coming! I can't wait to see the final result. BTW, with what did you make that concept? I like how perfect it is, for I imagine that made the modeling process alot easier.

Volcandro
10-27-2003, 10:55 PM
I start by drawing the shape on paper, after that i copy the drawing into photoshop and start working on layers. First i'll make a rough shetch in photoshop and after that I use the line tool to make the lines in the second layer. That's it ;)
It's very basic shape and it's good for the model reference.
Sorry for my english ...

Volcandro
10-28-2003, 01:57 AM
Ok, after 2 hours of modelling and studying the model i'll add some details and change a little bit the shape of the jeep.

For now the model is build of 23590 polys.

Suspension? where are the shocks? springs? dampers? Sway bars? steering linkage? and more importantly..... when the front wheels turn, they will rub.

oh yeah... i forgot... its futuristic right? well, i bet that by then, they will have genetically modified midgit slaves that fit under the car and every time you want to turn, they all lift the car and rotate... how cool is that!!!*sarcasm off*...... i Really look for practicality and functionality, its my nature.

Any updates?

Hi everybody.
This is my first post in this forum. It's seem to be very nice here.

I'm a beginner in 3D, I'm using 3Dsmax 5.1 and I'm very impressed in the way lots of people (like you Volcandro) render the objects, like if it was plaster. Your jeep is very beautiful, and it very looks like a sculture.

Could someone explain how to obtain this result?
Thank you very much.
Have a nice day

jeffro
11-02-2003, 02:03 PM
Rendering is going to add a lot to the vehicle. It looks really good so far though. Nice to see your progression on this project. I like it when people post that.

Volcandro
11-02-2003, 02:08 PM
Sure, I can explain you what's the technique Raphaël_f
. But sorry for my english ;)

Ok, first you have to place an omni light in your scene. Secondly create a skylight from your lights menu. Place it whenever you want.
The second etape is activate the light. Press 9 and then select the lightracer option. The configuration is good, but you can adjust the initial sample spacing and ''the subdivide to'' option for better results. The higher is the faster...
The other option that give better results is the ray bias, for better results up it to .9 or something like 1.3 that's gonna affect the shadows.
Finally take an oren nayar blinn shader, up the specular level and the glossiness a little bit and add a falloff to the reflection slot. Adjust the falloff type to fresnel, and finally press F9 for the final render.
That's it !
If you have questions don't hesitate.

Peace

Spirit2029
11-02-2003, 02:15 PM
hey vol...lookin awesome!! reminds me of the jeep from final fantasy...cant wait to see some really sweet textures on it..

Spirit2029

Volcandro
11-02-2003, 02:16 PM
I forget one thing Raphaël_f.
You have to change the exposition control of the light. To do that, press 8 and select logarithmic exposure control active. This option give more light to the scene from all the sides.

Volcandro
11-02-2003, 02:29 PM
Thanks for the comments guys the jeep is going finished very slowly but i'm gonna finish it from beginning to the end. :)

For the references, yes i'm inspired by a lot of cars... final fantasy jeep, hummers, sport jeeps etc... The way i work is improvisation with all.

OCT
11-02-2003, 05:29 PM
Yea, i agree about the seat belts. Maybe add some handles for them to hold onto instead. Because i wouldn't think in an assualt or whatever they could get out easy. Then agian I don't know what this vehicle is being used for. I just assumed some kind of militance.

Looks great though, i love the ammount of detailt that you are puting into this [Detail never hurt anyone] :)

Keep it up!

commy
11-03-2003, 03:51 PM
awesome model i think u could funk the seats up a bit they look kinda all in one ish maybe thats what ure goign for i dunno it just looks like a vehcial which should be more modular and functional. maybe a metal frame round the seats etc? that way ud have something to put ure belts oh and it would look more ruff and ready. atm it looks like theres a very stripped down future jeep with the seats from some kind of modern people carrier lol

great stuff tho :)

Volcandro
11-03-2003, 04:08 PM
Hehehe, i'm gonna add 2 other straps to it to be sure that the persons don't fly through the windows.
I'm not sure i'll gonna add windows to the vehicle. It's a desert vehicle maybe. For the metal around the seats is a good idea yes.

looks good so far only thing... I would never buckle that 5th buckle(the crotch one) I was in a firnds jeep offroading and had 5 points in it and I was wearing it and we actually rolled over(pretty damn scary) and thank god I was but my god that crotch buckle will rip your nuts off... I'll stick to my fast, low to the ground, non rollable, car wtih 4 point harness but anyway good job... only thing I would do is make the steering wheel wider...like not as rectangular... just an Idea.. just seems really small... but yea I would so ruin that gear box with R being where 4th is supposed to be

Thank you for the tips guys.

- Anoe_nomus, the model is modeling in polys, I use spline a lot with the new shell modifier in max 6, very good modifier....

- And for the textures Marc31.
Your textures are very good, maybe i'm gonna use the dirty ones.
Thank you for all.

try that, i think it would suit the Jeep due to it being quite futuristic.

Thumbs up http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

wow, great work man, really like it

i think yellow is more for sport cars ... and with this color it doesn't look like any "war machine"

i think it would be better if you had it in the other color "the upper hammer"

also if you could paint it like the army hammers (i don't know what that color is called but i mean the one which has like 3 colors light green, dark green and maybe light brown) ?

it looks cool in the yellow though

RealViper
11-12-2003, 10:27 AM
I always looking this good thread and everything on your car is great, but now I have to say something about this awful color:

Please change it!!! Or it will be fine four your enemies to get a good target... :-)

Cryptite
11-12-2003, 11:40 AM
Yea.. I agree with RealViper; that color is pretty hideous, and I always have thought that for cars. I quite believe that the blue chrome color in the above and aforementioned pictures would look damn fine on this beautiful work of art. This is one of the most detailed models I've seen in awhile. Keep up the great work!

veto
11-12-2003, 12:03 PM
i think yellow fits pretty good, but you really should make it dirty ;)

swee7an: the word you are searching for is called camouflage ;)

Volcandro
11-12-2003, 08:01 PM
Sorry guys but it's a desert jeep. For the color is just temporary. I'm gonna desaturate the model a little bit for some desert color and add some dirty texture on it. For the camouflage, i'm not sure but that's gonna hide all the little details on the jeep ? Maybe not ...

Volcandro
11-12-2003, 08:54 PM

Thank you swee7an, but I don't uderstand how to do this : use a good background image (HDRI, for very good results). This is using Max5's advanced rendering with a .hdr image as the skylight. (3dtotal)

hey volcandro this looks way better now that u lowered its profile..got the tire and suspension happenin.. I dont know if anyone has mentioned it already..didnt have the time to read through..but the seats still look a bit off to me. They need to be bigger..they make it look like a huge huge vehical...and if thats what your going for great.. I'd like to see it a little more crowded though..so bigger seats..cockpit filling up more of the frame room..

but like I said..awesome model man..love the details...and I can see what your tryin to do with the color...get some dirtmaps and scratches on there..and it'll be amazin..

Spirit 2029 I'm gonna leave the seats like that cause the soldiers must have space for equipments :)

marc31 thank you for your textures. but before texturing I have to finish modelling the gun and the elevator.

A pic of the machinegun, maybe need more details ???
Need critics.

hello,

great work so far ...

I THINK that the gun is little thin...

for details, hmmmm ...

* what about a safety switch ?
* Bullets holder (or whatever they call it)
* stand ( when it is not mounted on the vehicle)
* what about attaching a grenade launcher ?

take a look at other weapons and see maybe you get a new or more ideas.

nice elevator

i have few Qs.

* do you use mesh smooth? or smoothing groups ?
* how did you model the tire ? its pretty nice and clean http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

Volcandro
11-15-2003, 08:04 PM
Hi swee7an, I don't use meshsmooth, just smoothing groups (auto smooth about 15 -25)
For the tire is the same technique. I found a tutorial at this page who show you If that could help you. http://www.danielbuck.net/tire_tut/tiretut.htm

See ya

No seriously, I don't really know for this moment but maybe an helicopter or an entry for a desert cavern. I think the cavern is a better choice what do you think ???

looks alot better now. before I think there was just too much contrast with the black and orange but not im likin it alot. if you dont already, make sure to put a bump map on it so those scratches will look better

holla thats great stuff so far.. I love the lift idea, especially those design. the texturing is a beginning but almost too regular in my eyes.. at your yellow/black version you given several detailes another(black) color than the main(yellow) one. I`d try to keep this scheme up !
great work !

magic6435 yes I use a little wacom tablet for the concepts. Very very useful.

Here's a little beginning of the helicopter model. Very early stage, about 30 minutes to do this with the shell modifier. Love this new tool ...

Yo...Joe! Nothing like bring G.I. Joe out of mothballs.
Great job. I think you were heading in the right direction with the textures. All you really need to focus on is the dirt and paint missing. There is also the point of making it a flat paint. who really wants to fight in a bright yellow truck anyways. Unless you are G.I. Joe.

wow! that is totally fantastic!!!!!!

great job man.

personally, im not keen on the robot or the spaceship, they seem a few ages ahead. they are a little futuristic for a jeep and a helicopter, if you see what i mean?

cant wait to see the cavern fully done, its going to be like thurderbirds!

Volcandro
11-27-2003, 11:18 PM
GFX I'm agree with you, so finally I'm gonna just put the helicopter, the jeep with the elevator and the base model in the scene.
