View Full Version : Noob (Add to FAQ): Tabs in Max 6
bupaje 10-26-2003, 09:27 PM Hi. Just started using Max 5.1 demo and got the 6 educational license. I can't find anything and want to use the Max tabs and interface from 5.1. I tried loading the legacy UI file but while I see tabs all the buttons are then gone to I have to reload all the tabs by hand or did I miss a file somewhere? Likely to be other confused neophytes so you may want to add this to you FAQ.

save your user interface including the icons.
otherwise copy the icons from your max5 UI folder into tha max 6 ui folder

The demo already ran out and I uninstalled it so I'm too late to save my old interface. I guess I'll see what I can do with this or see if there are any type of plugins that organize the stuff differently as there seems to be a ton of max goodies around. To bad because for a guy just starting out the tabs made things a little easier to find.

theres been some complaining about this on the discreet forum and I sure hope discreet is smart and puts them back in if they ever have a point release for max 6
I agree with, they should have left them in
max 4 had them
max 5 had them but then lost the ability to delete tabs
max 6 got totally rid of them
:annoyed:
tabs? aren't they those things that live up the top of the screen? like the button you press to create a spacewarp or cube? after using max for a week i turned em off...

the tabs are only for navigating between docked toolbars,
thats the only function the every had,
And the used a lot of screen-space.
I never used them,i never liked them
- and always thought of them of being only there,
to look like the Maya shelves.
I really don't understand, why so many complain because
of this thing being gone with max 6,
In my eyes it sounds like you people simply don't
want to change any working behaviour with the new version.

the tabs menu could hold 7-8x more items then a regular tool bar, and it took up the space of one tool bar, unlike how much room is hogged by 7-8 tool bars...i thought it was a real space saver..go figure

In my noob case it is just easier to find things. There is a lot of complexity in max for someone just starting out and it makes sense to me to just click 'Lights' and have all the icons for features right there. Step back a minute and remember being totally green and look at Max with all the different tools, helpers, modifers and so on and it is a lot to digest. In my case I have the extra good fortune of also having some minor problems with my memory and concentration so I am spending a frustrating amount of time going back and forth to the help file and digging through options to try to figure out where stuff is.
