Hi Guys,

My first FX Wars challenge. we'll start with some weapon testing and then evolve it into a proper combat sequence. So, we will try to do both objectives for this contest.

Animation and Camera work : Badger
Shading/lighting/FX/Comping : Florinmocanu

For the desired Models, i would like to use Mark one and Mark two, should make for an interesting animation. Also, for the Mark one, the addons would be nice to have.

Thanks for your comments guys, really appreciated :). And don't worry about the models guys, they are great.

Second draft, started to go into detail. I'm also starting to rig them and when i you finish the arena i will start doing a rough draft of the animation/camera work.

But, for the moment, shading time :D.

I also applied some incandescene effect (white/yellow) to some parts of the robots in PS, i'm still looking if it's working or not. The bright orange center of the robot is already 3d, it's like his own power reactor/source.

Draft 03. :)

I added two of the weapons to the big robot, did some changes to models/tweaks mainly and also decided to give this more high-tech look to the smaller one. Maybe the effect is to strong right now, how i applied it in PS, but it's definitely going towards what i want. As described in the model library, he will be agile, using high-tech weapons like plasma gun while the big one, older model will use more conventional forms of attack.

The shaders look good. What are you rendering with?

My only complaint would be that the machines look like toys. It's the bright paint and colors with the simple shapes (spheres and cylinders) that are causing this effect.

I'm rendering with Vray.

About your comment, well in the 80's that's how they thought them, that's how they designed them, like something which for us is a toy, but for them it was really high tech.

And with the older model, that Roberto modelled, i will surely keep it more toyish looking, but with lots of damage/scratches. For the newer model, smaller one, i will dive into it's shaders quite a bit since he wasn't touched that much. And i'm aiming for a more high-tech look, also not that scratched/damaged, i have some ideas in mind which i need to put to practice to see where they lead.

Made a render test last night using not the studio setup i was using, but a more realistic lighting with HDRIs for reflection/GI and a vray sun. To see how my shading holds up until this far.

Update time. I'm doing some model tweaks and almost done with the shading part. On to rigging soon and when the arena model is finished i'll start to do a moving storyboard.

Thanks Mike. My next update will have a test of the personal FX elements of the robots.

Black robot : energy shield, boosters, plasma bullets

White robot : flame thrower, gattling gun (i need to model it), rockets flying.

How will i show them? By doing a moving still/illustration thing.

Have the black one in air, flying (boosters on), shooting plasma bullets while his energy shield is up. The white robot will be firing rockets/bullets(gattling gun) and the flamethrower, bullets and fire going around the energy shield. Rockets i want to be able to pierce through, but the black one will be able to dodge them, he is fast.

So, by doing this still frame of a combat sequence, i get to try almost all the FX elements and test really early how to comp them/render them etc.. in the best way.

Latest update:

First run at one of the FX elements, the jet engine booster effect. Also, rigged the black robot, modeled a big ass Gatling gun for the white robot and also tweaked the back part. Played around with a flying pose for the black robot, but itís just testing etc.., iíll get into that later when i have the arena model and i can start doing a moving storyboard with low poly models. For the next days, iíll start to do a basic rig for the white robot and also start testing more FX elements.

So, i just finished the shading/model prep part. Iím pretty happy with what i achieved with the time i had available. (2-3 hours a night for the last 2 weeks).

I did some changes to the gattling gun, inspired by roberto's gattling gun (now they are quite similar) and also, remodeled the rocket launcher, updated the back piece of the white robot and did small tweaks here and there.

So, i want now to test the robots under real lighting conditions, not studio setups. So, this is the first test, an inside/no sun situation and tomorrow the second on will come, with plenty of sun http://s1.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif?m=1286132869g .

Yes, it's just a background plate. It's a HDRI taken from the sIBL sets from :

it's the Old Industrial Hall HDRI set.

Ofc, i changed it quite a bit in PS, more contrast, sun glow etc..., but it's just a background plate with a plane for shadows :P. Ah, the brown earth is actually brown from the shadow, i made it brownish since it gave a nice look.

And thanks for your apreciation, i really want to get a kick-ass result out of this competition :P

I started to setup the enviroment, while my friend Badger has started to do the final rig and also will start to do some walk-cycles/movements of the robots.We will put a team name these days for sure.

Here are some test renders of the rough enviroment, i see this arena in an old volcano crater, in a volcanic/ashy enviroment, no sun-light etc.. It's a huge WIP atm, i just sculpted something fast and went to test some positioning. When i am a bit satisfied with the rock crater, i will start to incorporate the arena into the rocks, for a better integration.

Hi there,

Had some time today so i did a rough draft of the rocket boosters, i put to much wavelet turbulence in the smoke, but that's not my problem. I don't like the boosters to throw this much smoke so after the initial burst the smoke will not be that much, it's to much like space shuttle launch right now :).

Here is my progress on the enviroment. I updated the riser and tower models with the updated ones from Roberto (really cool result roberto :D) . Also, did the lava part and lava lighting. Lava was a quick material i devised, i need to look seriously into reference material to make it look right, itís kind of generic, right now. Also, i already placed some dummy lights for the Light poles. I hope you like the result this far.

Text update, but a big one i think.

So, my friend badger finished the rigs, both robots are rigged and he is working on walkcycles, we may do an animation test this week.

I'm using roberto's latest model updates and detailing the arena/shading it and also doing some VFX tests, you may see some vfx animations this week from me. So, progress is going strong, but i didn't have the time to do some proper renders. But the next days will surely bring some fat updates :D

I may do an explosion of this kind http://www.vimeo.com/23611911 (previously done by me) in the animation, though i don't know if it will suit or not to the story :). But it would look cool nonetheless. I think the main bulk of explosions will be grenade launcher/mortar type of explosions, smaller scale, but i may blow up one of them and have him go up in a big ass explosion :P

I did :) Thanks for the update.

Tomorrow is update time, i'll post new renders with the enviroment. Badger already did a walkcycle so expect next week on tuesday/wednesday a rendered preview of the white robot walking in the arena, i want to already get the mood/feel of the final comp. So, expect feet dust, dust blowing, ash around
maybe some spewing lava particles in the background
I'll try to go as close to the final product as possible.

Hi Mike,

We are planning for about 35 seconds-40 maybe, but the number of shots will be more clear at the end of this week. Probably between 12-15, dunno, depends on what we decide. When we decide we will post the animatic rough edit with all shots planned :). It also helps to have the enviroment in place, we can really make out the rough cameras, seeing what it's going to be.

Another frame of the preview animation which we are rendering at the moment. This time, i made in PS a different post process, to test a more desaturated look, with strong color highlights. When we finish the small preview to render, than i'll go in AE and build 2-3 variations of post and than discuss them with badger and decide on one of them for the whole animation.

I've tweaked the flamethrower, to give it more speed/power, usually they shoot over large distances so i wanted to achieve that feel.

Also, we already have a rough edit, we are working on it, also getting mock-up particle fx in there, for general feeling and rhythm etc... I hope this week to present it to you guys.

We also started rendering, i'm happy we are starting to spit out final frames :).

Progress update. We are rendering shots atm, since 2-3 days ago, it's really slow, but it pays off in terms of quality :). We will try to get a teaser out soon, in maybe 1 week (end of next week i think) with 3-4 shots, so you can get a taste of how it's shaping up.

Another flamethrower test, i've made this setup, which i'll refine for the actual shots, but it's quite usable...

Hi guys,

Me and Vlad (Badger) have been hard at work to complete shots from our entry and we prepared a small 4 shots teaser for you, they are around 90-95% complete and they will give you a taste of our work. Vlad (Badger) did animation, rigging and camera work, i did lighting/shading/extra modelling, rendering, FX and compositing.

All is 3d, no stock footage used, quite a bit of extra FX elements done, but i think it's paying off :). Can't wait for the bigger FX parts :).

Sound is starting to get on our objectives, Badger may take that task almost completely, i will of course review with him what he does and yeah, just offer my thoughts on what he will create.

That's it for now, we will try to post the whole animatic soon as well, so you can see what our animation is all about.

Status is : working really hard on it. But we don't want to show much more, we want it to be a surprise for everyone when we finish it.Though we may show a tid-bit of the other robot, just to tease ya :)...

A lot of little details because I'm creating NYC skyline and lower manhattan, as well as populating it with cars and people (not using massive or anything crazy like that). I will try to post some renders soon. I'll start the majority of the animation starting later this week.
