im not really a nooB but this had gotten me stump.
its a pic from a max tut. the bone is fully shaded. but the object is frozen in a special way?
does anyone know how to do this?

something with turned of "frozen in gray" maybe?

Looks like those bones are a part of an IK chain. When that happens, the bone becomes "frozen". The only way to move the bone is through the IK chain.
Do you mean 'how are the bones shaded but the rest of the viewport not...?'
If you do then there are 2 ways - one is an option called 'shade selected' from the drop down menus at the top (I forget which one - very handy to have a keyboard shortcut for though :D). The other way is for the other objects in the scene to have a wireframe material applied to them.
