Never had this problem in XP. Actually, don't think I've had this problem in Windows 7 before a few months ago. Basically it randomly just hangs for no reason. I have 6gb ram installed and a quad-core i7 950, so it shouldn't be the specs. Cause it happens on not so big comps as well.
I've often noticed it happening when I do a second RAM preview. Like, I start one RAM preview with numpad 0, then if I hit the key again it starts playing, and I hit it again and it just hangs. Sometimes it fixes if I Alt+Tab to another window and then back. Other times it takes ages before it starts responding again.
Only thing I can think of that's causing this, is that I played around with the preferences a while back. I followed some guides on how to use GPU and multiprocessing. But even with open gl and multiprocessing off it's the same.
Also I sometimes notices multiple instances of after effects in task manager. But I'm guessing that's because I'm then use multiprocessing.
