View Full Version : Collaboration idea for improving demo reels
UnholySmell 05-24-2011, 08:51 AM Hello,
I'm a professional animator working in games. I already have work so I'm not looking for any favours, but I recently had an idea that would help me give back to the community. I've seen countless demo reels and show reels from modelers and riggers that showcase their work as well as they can. But many of them are specialists who aren't very proficient in other fields. In my mind, nothing lacks luster more then a brilliantly modeled or rigged character that has been animated poorly. So, I suggest collaboration. If we can gather some 3d artist that would like help adding that je ne sais quoi that only an artist from another field can add, then we could make some amazing demo reels and get some people some jobs!
This is the demo reel that got me work, little out of date but you get the point:
http://player.vimeo.com/video/12147863
In a nutshell, if modelers and riggers post their work here or collaborate on their own. Then send me animation ready rigs, I'll gladly animate some shots in my spare time (or perhaps another animator will want to). I'll send back the scene so both the modeler and the rigger can render it and publish it (with due credit to the other artist) in their next reel. Win/Win!
You may be wondering what I intend to 'get out of it'. Well, I'm curious to see if anyone bites. And this is exactly the kind of networking I need early in my career. A small debt of gratitude can go a long way down the line in this industry.

I can't imagine people easily sharing their works just to get some basic lighting and rendering.

I'm a little confused that you think I'm offering to light and render for people... Unless that's what you do? You might be surprised. Some may be great at what they do, but need help with some polish.

Its a nice idea. Good luck with it. I usually ask friends in vfx for help doing things like dynamics etc.

I'm sorry I missed your point. So you want to animate people's modeling reels? What's the benefit? I saw reels of animators with just bones. Or you want to show your skinning skills?

Well, I figure there's riggers who need models, and both modelers and riggers who want to show that their work animates cleanly. Or maybe they just want to show their character or creature moving like they would expect their prospective employer would want to see them. But I am only offering to animate for those that feel they don't have the skill to do it themselves.

If you want to show your work animates cleanly on all stages, you should be familiar with all of them, isn't it? I think your idea fits to collaboration projects, and this site has a section for them. Maybe you could find people there.

I think its a brilliant idea.
This way we can all benefit from each other.
Personally I don't mind sharing my work with others as long as it helps them and It is not just another model lying in some dusty corner of their hard drive. I can make more of them provided i am alive :P
Thank you very much for sharing this idea and saying this here out loud.
I fully support this idea.
I'll think about what i would like other artists to help me with, and also what i can offer other artists from my skill set.
I'll come back if i get to find something.
Regards

Thank you. If you have your valuable assets, please share it with us. We will find the best use for them.

I didn't intend to start a pool of 'valuable assets'. If modelers have characters they'd like to have rigged they should post pics and riggers or animators should contact them privately.

UnholySmell- not sure if you will see this...I guess this got dumped in here by a mod?
But want to say despite the slam you got I applaud the fact that you made a move to reach out and collaborate to help others!
We need more people like you in here.
PS: even if old your reel is topnotch imo modelers are nuts to not take you up on your offer.

I may just do that. I have a Aeon Flux model somewhere. I just need to find which Hdd its on and give it a few tweaks, and Ill put it up on rapidshare. If someone can rig it and then animate it. It be cool.
Here are some renders.

Hey guys.
Soft- yeah, I was aware the thread was moved, thanks.
Air- Looks cool. If you can find a rigger who wants to get her set up I can think of some cool stuff to do.
Please keep in mind that this idea is for the modelers benefit as well, so that means we should be showing your most current and best work. I appreciate people digging up old projects that were never animated, but the original intention was to help modelers and riggers showcase their best (newest) work.

I love the idea of sharing knowledge to improve portfolios. I have been animating in cammercials, games and tv series for a few years, and I am always interested in improving my demo reel. I could animate some models. If someone is interested, PM me for more details

Here is the 3dsmax Jessica Rabbit file, it has the CAT rigged character, which needs some work on the skirt.. And a Club interior model that is hidden on a layer in layer manager.

It's a good idea... it needs to be well organised though in this thread. A lot of people will be very wary of trusting strangers with their hard work. Step one will need to be making this thread visual. If anyone wants to get something out of this they need to start by giving some visuals. If you want help post images of your models, and videos of your rigs and animation. Then when someone else sees a match with their needs I would suggest they get in touch privately to swap the assets and keep in touch by email or private message.
I wouldn't suggest sharing assets (models, rigs, textures) on this thread. And when you do agree with someone to exchange work, make sure to have a decent chat, get to know each other and check out each other's wok and background.
Collaborations of all sorts with volunteers amongst strangers can very easily end in a large percentage of wasted time, and effort. You can quickly weed out the problems and reduce that percentage by being smart.
Bear in mind that modelers at the beginning of the chain have to have a lot of faith in the end chain people (the animators). The Animators stand to gain a lot here, so make sure if you lend your work to an animator you can trust you're getting something back.

I would have preferred an image of Jessica before the file is sent floating around the internet. Also, if the animator doesn't have CAT will the file load?
-Mike
I couldn't have said it better. Though, your comment about animators having a lot to gain; the best I can hope for is to animate a piece good enough to want to include it in my own reel. Anyone who thinks they can abuse this thread to get free assets must not want a job in the industry. They say it's not what you know, it's who you know. And if everyone you know thinks you're a thief you wont even have a chance.

I would agree with all thats said here, but feel that its ok for my model to be used by anybody, I am not being precious with her. If the animator is using max2010 or later the file will load. If anyone wants to strip out the Cat rig and use bones or character studio, then thats fine. Also if anyone wants an obj of the model unrigged, post here and I will upload that also. Hope I am not stepping on any toes, I just wanna give something back to the community, so I will be digging up old models and updating them before making them available.
Ill upload some renders of Jessica here.

I think it's a great idea, I have a reel I'm gearing up to finish in the next couple of months and having a couple of the assets animated would look great.
I have a buddy of mine who did that for one of my models and it turned out wonderful, I sent him the model, he built the rig, animated it it, sent it back and I lit and rendered it. Turned out great, then we both had something to use on our own reels.
UnholySmell - Thanks for posting the idea, I'll check back in a couple weeks and see if anyone is interested.
