View Full Version : [character] lena (wip)
valentine 10-26-2003, 10:03 AM hi !
cgtalk.com seems to be a great community as i determined - so i would be very pleased to become a part of it ;)
first i want to introduce me: i'm a 20 years old boy from germany. i started threedimensional work 10 month ago with cinema 4D xl 7 (student) :)
i like cinema because of its great surface and the renderer. the thing that bugs me is that cinema has not many modelingtools... also the character animation features are very limited. i think its a great tool especial for beginners.
now i decided to change my 3D software - i sway between xsi and lightwave. my work is focused on character modeling/animation... perhaps you have some tips what would be the better choice for my requirements.
heres my latest (wip) female character. i call her lena :)
she has no eyelash, no eyes and no hair - texturing eyeballs is kinda hard to manage as i discovered ;) also her facial expression looks a bit "pissed off" ( ;) ) and i dont know how to get her a bit more neutral :(
please write some critiques.

Thats some very nice modelling! It looks very realistic allthough the material feels a bit "hard" and metallic.
The ears, albeit really nicely modeled do seem to be too flat to the head. And I hope you'll give her some hair =)
Great texturework

hey wiro - thx for your comment !
i love your work - since ive started with 3D, there are various images of your work on my harddrive :)
ill try to "reduce" the "hardness" by reducing the specular lights. the ears - well - maybe i rotate 'em a bit.
another problem is to figure out how to texture those eyeballs. also the eyelash makes me weird ;) i tried to do some polywork... but that wasnt really satisfactorily... gonna search for some tutorials. maybe one of you guys has one ;)

Though the overall shape is ok, I would say there are several problems with the modeling. The eyes are a hair too small and the area around the eyes seem a little off like a little too flat. Also, because of the high poly count, the face is actually too smooth, you have about 2 to 3 times the polys you need. The chin should also be brought down a little as it's a little small for the face as well.
The spec is ok, what it looks like is you are using a procedural instead of a spec and gloss map. if you are using a map, you need to bring the base color down, closer to black as it looks too evenly applied now. I would encourage you to add more to the forehead color map as it looks too clean. Freckles seem focused around the nose and no where else. I would also reduce the freckling a little around nose area or freckle the rest of the face more.
Lighting is also part of the problem. You have a light the is directly in front of the model, which brings out the reflections on the face. Check out info on "classical" light rigging, it helped me a lot with my modeling.
www.Flay.com at least used to have an excellent tutorial on making realistic eyes. I would check there.
Very nice work! I would recommend Lightwave myself. It is an awesome program. It has a huge featues list, very versitile, and is used a lot for TV and movie production. The learning curve is pretty steep but once you get used to how things work, building models etc can be quite fast.

Great work considering you are "into" 3d for only 10 months.
The upper eyelashes (or better the fold between the eyebrows and the eyes) need some work modeling wise (the texture covers it up pretty good, but the wireframe shows it clearly)
If the only thing that bothers you about c4d is the modeling tools, I suggest you check out Wings3d ( www.wings3d.com ) it is free and really strong on the modeling side, so maybe a mixture of Wings3d and c4d will work for you.

thx to all who gave those nice c&c's !
i updated my model over the day - gave her some eyelashes, some eyeballs and last but not least some eyeballs ;) especially the hair still looks kinda crappy (glad about this wonderful word WIP ;)) !
i made some geometrical tweaks at the lips and the nose...

I didn't notice it that much on the first pic, but her eyes are frightingly wide open, like she just saw death itself ;)
Usually parts of the iris are covered by the eyelashes, just make sure the black in the middel isn't covered or else she will look dazed/passed out.
Hair is actually really (!) hard to make (FinalFantasy anyone? ;) ) so it isn't that bad at all.
Keep up the great work.
P.S.: don't ask... *watches at clock*... 1:34am... I should be sleeping already ;) But I am still surfing on CG-Talk.

Whoah. This is very nice :))
J:K:Makowka: Why sleep??? 1:50 am -i am fresh as ... i don't know :)
Thanks for the kind words Valentine :P
Well, now that the eyes are in they do seem really really wide! This is why I've gotten used to create eyeballs with at least temporary solid colours on them to judge how to model the eyes. It's too easy to model them too wide otherwise.
The upper eyelid should touch the iris to give her a more relaxed look. The lower lid could also cut across the pupil a bit but its pretty fine as it is too.
As for the hair, I think you've done a quite fine job! Like J.K.Makowka said it's really hard to do good hair without plugins (and even then...). I think you should have used a higher resolution opacitymap to get rid of that moire and the jaggies.
Other than that I really do like the model as it is =)

nice work... so did you model this in XSI or Lightwave ? and is it poly by poly or box modeling ?

hi again !
i tried to manage all your crits while tuning lena !
i closed the eyelids a bit more; set the hair to a higher resolution; scaled and shaped the chin; tweaked lips and the nose and finally created new eyeballs and textures.
so here she is (not really final, but...) :

wire (with activated hyperNURBS also called subdivision) :

c&c's are welcome !
@ sebek27:
neither, nor.. ;) i modeled und textured her in cinema 4D xl 7.3 and photoshop.
@ Drakaran:
yes - on the one side theres xsi. i have an acquaintance whos using xsi for about 3 years now. he said that hes gonna help me with xsi. on the other side theres lightwave which seems to be very interesting, too ! the problem with lightwave is, that there wont be a teacher for me ;( kinda hard decision.
