Im using the ramp shader to achieve an incience look on my material.
Im using the facing angle option....so i can always get the desired look no matter what angle the camera is facing from.

My problem though is that light still seems to be effecting my object, and im getting dark and light sides to my object. Im plugging the ramp shade directly into the out colour of a surface shader...so light should have no impact at all on the object with this material on it. ANy ideas what im doing wrong?

Cheers,
Dan.

if you are uisng a material in the outcolor slot of an surface material, you'll still get shaded results, because maya calculates the shading for each material, that means for example, the the color input into the surface material is the full color of the ramp shader, including shading, specular etc.

You should use the incandescence slot of the ramp shader, though if you use incandescence, you wouldn't need the surface shader for the effect you want anymore.
