First time here and I guess this is my first "real contest" ever. I'm really new to the WIP type submissions so with both feet I gladly jump in. This sketch is the first thing that popped in there and I figure it is a starting point. Just trying to keep a grasp on reality in this first stage but I have a feeling that won't last long.

This is my first model. I don't really know if this is going to be a "main strcture" or an ot building but i plan to have about 15 different styles in the finnished product.

The base was a bit out of place so i changed it.

I was wondering what software you people are using. I have tried a few different types but I'm not sure which ones I like. I would like to learn a bunch of new ones so any input would be appreciated.

Another model still in the making. going to work on a newer concept sketch now. I feel the first one is dead in the water.

Well I got a few textures built and i don't really like all of them. This is a sample, gonna post some more after tweaking.

Well I like the blue texture toward the front although I'm not sure if it 'fits' well on your model. I would see this as a pretty cool ground texture if you played with the hues a bit. Are you working on models first and then arranging their placement? I'd make a suggestion to work out a rough composition first on paper and then you could work the issues about main structures etc. The other texture looks quite luminous and reflective but is maybe too busy for what you have it on..?? It would look kinda cool on an intricate design though. Lets see those concepts

I see what you mean 100% and am glad to hear it. I really am not that good at creating textures to begin with and I wasn't sure if I liked them in the first place. The blue texture was one of thoes "accidents" that turned out OK. I see your point about the concept and agree, I should get a more solid idea before I run off with something. Honestly it was just kinda popping in there and I was trying to make it as it did. I will keep working on a concept for now and get that posted for crits. Thanks for the look kjc.

Good luck to everyone.

Well, I did what you told me to and here is what I got thus far. Of corse these are subject to change. The bluish grey texture is not permanant, I just threw it on there. Comments please. I need all the help I can get.

This is just a test. I was going for a "tunnel" feel for an "atmosphere". I used this texture just to see how the depth felt.

Same as last but I worked the texture a little bit. Time for some shut eye.

Hiya. Again I'd say to first use old faithful pen and paper to work out your compositions. That's what I meant by "those concepts". It really does eliminate the guesswork of what will look good when it comes to the 3d stage. It'll save time on modelling, texturing, lighting everything really. Maybe even take your tunnel there and see what structures you can place inside it, with pencil. Like if it's a tunnel does it have 'cracks' which will create nice negative shapes etc. This is only a suggestion of course, not a limiation on the tunnel idea.

You're anxious to get modelling, ME TOO but I'm not touching it until I get a good 85% of what I'm looking for from one of my concepts. Basically, what I've found is that thumbnails (with the format ratio -something like 100W by 137H) is the best way to find what you're looking for as a final image, SOONER. You can create hundreds of them in the time it takes to make one model. The way I'm approaching it, and it's only recently I've copped on to this is to think in terms of interesting shapes and see which one of your models/concepts fits in there. This obviously isn't set in stone as everyone has their own approach. It's just what's been working for me lately. And getting me out of this behaviour :banghead:

I hope my advice sounds like just that and not preaching. And hopefully it's of some help to you.

On the texturing note : 'one of those 'accidents' that turned out OK' is me HALF the time :scream: ah texturing!

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Keep up the good work

Thanks again for the input. I appreciate it and take it as you intended. My major problem is I am REALLY bad at drawing. I can get an concept in my head that looks like an award winning idea (inside the box) but just can't seem to put it on paper. I have only been working with graphic software for about a year now and I have tried, on numerous attempts, to approach a design like you say. I look at the work that people produce, make notepad and word documents of tutorials and "techniques" they recommend and they are, for the most part, identical to your method. I just can't seem to "draw" anything, I mean not even a simple daisy. The first concept sketch I posted here was of course rough to say the least but I feel it is better than my freehand abilities.

My second problem is software. I don't have much to work with and can't afford most of the good ones.

I will work on drawing a freehand sketch for this contest.
Reasons:
1) I want to get better
2) When someone that knows what they are talking about gives you an idea, it is most likely a good one. And you took time out to explain that to a "new guy", twice.

So tonight it is to the drawing board.
Maybe now i'll be :banghead:

Thanks again for your comments.

Here's an update to my concept. Like I said, I stink at drawing. Scanner crapped out when I got this done so yes I took a picture of it ;]. I'll explain it all next.

So I'm trying to get some ideas for this contest and then this thought popped in.

The Description of the contest says... "You are standing on some unknown alien setting. This location seems to be whispering to you, you have a feeling that something was created here; maybe even the land itself is alive." (You can read the rest of it yourself).

So what if the "aliens" are inside us? Harvesting energy or life from our cells. What if everything we know about human existance is really one BIG alien landscape?

So my task now is to try to interpret that the best I can, and possibly win an UBER nice PC in the process.

If someone already had this idea... go with it. I am not gonna be the guy that blurts "Hey that was MY idea!!!"

Maybe this will give some of you a different perspective to look at as well. Not that most of you need it judging by the work I have seen so far.

You guys have some MAD talent going on and I hope to be that good someday.

So... here goes.

I was just curious about the render resolution thing. I can only work with a picture size of 1680 X 1257. Any bigger and I can't see what I am doing. My screen resolution is set to 1280 X 1024 and it will not go higher. Do you think this is going to "disqualify" me cause it isn't even CLOSE to waht the rules would like to see?

Any input on this would be appreciated.

You mentioned that you didn't have access to "the good ones" in relation to software.
Just letting you know that a 30 day trial version of max 6 is available here Discreet (http://www.discreet.com/3dsmax/) They have all help files too regarding every aspect of the programme. It's a great programme. Hope that helps with the software issue. I don't know if you have access to more than one computer also, but, if you did I think it's a way of getting around just a months usage.

I'm not sure what you mean about the resolution but you shouldn't get disqualified. It says not to upsize images and submit what you can.

Mess about with the levels on the last concept. Too bright to see!

I finally figured out how to make a "tunnel" type model that (in my opinion) looks half decent. If anyone out there knows an easier way, feel free to fill me in.

Here is the Mesh I made, but rendered.
More to follow as soon as I can.

If you are reading this I most likely looked at your thread. I figured it was easier for me to say... "Your concepts and models are really sweet!!" ...once in this post as opposed to 9000 times in everyone elses thread.

Really... you all are doing really awsome work. Keep it up.

Just another plain model. I am working on a combined modeling render at the same time but I feel I need more structures to make it look right. I am going to try to get a plain render of the structures in a scene tonight, but no promises. I also am working on textures for the structures and have one I really like and some others I don't like at all (I'm sure you all have faced this). I hope to have several to post within about a week.

I'm listing this as a concept sketch cause it is a lttle bit different than I have been posting (not much). This one is a view as if you are looking out of a hole (and a rather deep one) that was bored into the... whatever it is you landed on. You can make out a planet or moon that cathes light from the right and shows a second light source from what I guess is directly above. Maybe the Aliens are having one of thoes "YAY... the suns and planets and mons are aligning!!!" parties. I got too many ideas and too little time and coffee.

Let me know what you think.

Well this is just a lighting test to see how dark this looks to everyone else. I am not sure which texture to go with yet but I am leaning towards a few. If anyone has any comments (good or bad, I can take it) please let me know. Hopefully I will get more time to work on this as time is running short.

Well if you wanted to know how black your last image was, well its dang near solid black on my monitor with just a hint of dark blue texturing just above the center of the image. If you want to know what I like out of this group I like a combo of #2 and the one just before the black one. OK that does not help much. I like the undulating smoothness and details in #2 but I like the viening/cell like structure in the green one it makes it look more 'alive' So if you could get the erieness of #2 with the living look in the green one I, personally, think you would have something pretty good.

Hey Jayson,

1st, congrats on entering this comp! Its a daunting task ahead of you! I almost crapped out and didnt enter. :P

I like ur idea of an alien civilization INSIDE a human body. I think that you could have something really unique going on there.

If you are doing that approach, I think that you should do some research in2 the different parts of the human body...get some nice images of Cells, Nerves, Viens, and all the gooey parts that make us...well...us!

Enough of the lecture tho, On2 your model!

Your tunnel looks nice, But i think its a liittle 2 dence 2 be practicle (unless ur running a beast of a machine). If u want 2 add the detail in2 your other structures, I would lessen the density on that tunnel a little. Use BUMP MAPS and DISPLACEMENT MAPS for the bumpyness, instead of actually modeling it.

With your texturing, the textures are extreamly 'busy' and as such you tend to lose detail in the model.

The tunnel effect is most visible on the green, because the texture is basically different shades of green, so it doesnt 'break up' the image that much...

Ill keep watching this thread tho! Looks promising!!!

First off... congrats on being featured in the Challange Article.

The mesh isn't really that dense. I just set the resolution really high to see what would happen (and no my PC isn't a monster) and forgot to set it down again.

As for models, I have about 8 or so already that I am trying to work into the tunnel wall (similar to fossils I guess), or kinda as gels floating around.

I am trying to get a feel for the Texture I want to use on the tunnel so I can start building a few for the structures and not have it look like a total waste of effort.

Hopefully I can hammer out some more models soon to post.

This is a general idea of where this work is going. The structures I built will be on the "cell" model in the foreground and there will be more floating through the "vein". I would like to know how dark or light this is to everyone so I can tweak the lighting a bit if needed. I look around at alot of work here some of it looks very bright. It all depends on monitor settings I guess.

I know this seems kinda simple but for me this has been an uphill battle all the way, and a great learning experience. Any comments are welcome as always.

That's pretty cool! I like the slimy wall shader you've got there...

Since you asked about the lighting: it's a bit too bright and not enough contrast in my humble opinion... Some difference between 'near' and 'close' would work wonders I think, either make it darker far away, or darker in the foreground.

Just a suggestion of course :)

I tried to make a few depth shaders for thak look, JamesMK, but none came out too well. I also messed around with PSP and I can add a few contrast layers to give it that look.
I also looked into monitor callibration settings to get a better idea of what everyone else sees but my monitor is a bit old and the settings aren't as sensitive as I would like.

Thanks for the input JamesMK. I will try your ideas and post the results asap.

Any other comments at all are welcome (and wanted) as always.

God I hope I did the upload right. I saw that just aboot everyone has 3 entries on the FTP server so I should be ok.

Well, this was the first graphics contest I ever entered. I just hope they give out ranks so I can at least see where I stood in this whole thing. Anyone know if they do?

Oh well. I guess there's always next year.

Not that I would vote for myself, I guess I'm just surprized is all.

Thanks for the update and the moral support Sacha.
I hope I do get more votes, but I am not sure I will get past this first round of voting. Maybe some year I will be at that level, but I don't feel I'm there yet.

Good luck to you. It looks like you will be moving on, and deservingly so.
