I have decided to try and do a quick concept/matte painting whenever I get time...the goal is to try and get as much practice into action so that there can be a steady improvement in my work. I thought it's a good idea to post my progress over here.

Critique, thoughts, suggestions are all very welcome!

Heres my quick hour long doodle for the day...did it while waiting for a compositing project to finish rendering :P

So my quest for painting a day continues. Here comes the next one. It would be nice for people to join in, you know like post your comments, any constructive feed back...etc.

I find the matte painting section really dying in here. Come on folks! Lets bring it back to life and get back to being a strong, helpful and learning community!

Mount SF - As seen from twin Peaks..A concept that I always saw in my dreams ever since I visited the Twin Peaks, SF. The city lights always reminded me of lava, hence the idea.

Hey Mukul...Both the concepts are good and you have done a good job in detailing.

Probably it might look better if you add some more visual elements to your first composition.

I like the first concept but you have some issues with those archs, they begin from foreground to background and they have the same aerial perspective depth all time, the second one is cool, maybe too saturated, some more lava flowing down would be nice and dramatic, the big smoke column should be lit differently, looks alike it has a big artificial blue light coming from ??

Your first one looks like its coming along good. You seem to have some issues with lighting though, your light source seems to be just above the mountain on the left side (as seen from the shadow from the mountain in the picture.) Since your light is that low and projecting a long shadow I would expect the arches to have shadows on the ground, and also some indication on the left side of where they touch the ground that the light is bouncing off them.

Hi Torqueguru! I think you did a great job on these concept matte paintings. These environment pieces are well conceived and they are actually packed with nice details. I personally like the first image as it is very mysterious looking. However, I think it will look better if you make changes on the arch because it's too imposing and it tends to draw the eyes away from the rest of the things in the concept. As for your second work, I think the volcano will look better if you lighten up the color a bit on its sides. Other than those though, I still think these are great.
