View Full Version : My Car Model
ferazzo777 10-25-2003, 12:56 AM Hi All , i have finally finished my car model.
All the model was done in NURBS then i convert it to Polygon because i want to animate the car, it's very very slow when you use NURB for animation ..!!!@!
Anyway i have a question, how do i get a reflection of the environment to the glasses or into the car it self ?
Im new to rendering, texturing and stuff , can someone guide me please?
1 more question, how do i animate a rotating wheels for the animation ,
thank you for any comments or suggestion

I just watched the gnomen video on that. There are alot of ways to do it. From what I got the best way for a car is to render a still of each direction of your environment, left, right, ground, sky, front and back. Then use the Env Cube under Env Textures. You can scale the projection shader and then drive your car through it. Car looks good.

FERRAZZO, are you using mental ray or software renderer? If mental ray, i recommend you using HDR image for everything. ONe problem is that you have to set it up right, otherwise you will be getting unrealistic results, heh. Anyway, in your shader (blinn), find reflectivity, and set it up to .5 or 1. THen in your render globals, find raytracing and turn it on; it doesnt really matter what values you use for this project, at least i cant find any difference. Anyway, now you should get some reflections, but dont expect much at first, practice it.
Why did you convert it man? THats a dumb thing to do. Now you have to set that meshsmooth for every single detail, and itll slow your system down. But nurbs tesselation, thats the way to go. Works like 3dmax render iterations for meshsmooth; visible only when rendered. And there is a little trick about mental ray and nurbs tesselation. You have to set 1 value of tess. for every detail, render/set nurbs tess./basic/ then set it to 1 for both fields, and set "highest quality". This way itll take about 1-2 min to render with HDRI using mental ray, and you will get a good damn quality man. Please anyone, correct me if im wrong.
To animate the wheels:
1.) group each wheel edit/group, then center the pivot modify/center pivot.
2.) go to animation tab, set a key on your first frame, then move the slider up to, say, 10 frames (im assuming that youll figure it out on ur own), then rotate your wheels, and then set one more key at that frame. DOne'.

thank you for the replies guys,
im not sure about rendering at all ! so i dont know what render im using.
I only know how to render current frame and render global to render all the animation .. im newbie man
anyway i convert it from NURB to Polygon because to move my model in NURB takes me 3-5 seconds ! it's really2 slooow
when i convert it to Polygon (well i know i lose some of the quality) it moves much faster , so i would know how's the animation goes.
anyway got to go back to help section and read about rendering :)
thanks again

thx vertexstudio , you really helped me a lot !!
this project is due in less than 48 hours, im worry about the rendering time ..
anyway i cant really open all your tutorial pages, it seems very slow in my 56k connection...
i wish you have done your tuts a long time ago , which would my life much easier
ciao

hey man, the problem is that i didnt even do the other pages yet. Ill hopefully be done soon; im posting here askin suggestions and such, you know, to help me build the site.
As for rendering time, check this car out:
http://www.vertexstudios.net/images/mercedes.jpg
This car, including all those reflections(HDRI), rendering with mental ray, would take me approx. 1 min 50 sec to render one frame. And the car is made of nurbs. Dont forget about the interior! http://www.vertexstudios.net/images/interior.jpg
Its possible to make an animation, it would take 5 hours to render a 10 second movie clip, but when you use a batch render, you can continue working with maya and still rendering.
As i see, your car will take about less time to render, so dont forget about setting the tesselation to 1 with highest quality!!! Render with mental Ray using HDRI(optional).
