My book which has been several years in the making is finally out. It is a detailed overview of lighting for all types of representational art, from painting to 3D. The book is available in English, French, Spanish and Italian.

The first four chapters can be read for free in a very popular tutorial series on my website, which has been a sticky thread in the lighting forum on CGTalk for a few years:

Light - a detailed tutorial (http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/light.htm)

The book itself goes into a lot more depth, and covers not only practical lighting but also how to light for composition, story and symbolism. There are also chapters on dealing with people and environments.

Check out the details on Amazon US (http://www.amazon.com/Light-Visual-Artists-Understanding-Design/dp/185669660X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1304420899&sr=1-1) or Amazon UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Light-Visual-Artists-Understanding-Design/dp/185669660X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304417336&sr=1-1)

Congratulations on finishing the book. Books about cg-lighting are rare and much needed. Right now there's no preview, so could you tell a bit about the table of content?

Thanks for the 4 part tute as well, I really find the way light interacts with the things fascinating.

That's weird, Amazon.com and Amazon UK both list it as being in stock. Sorry if you have to wait, maybe it's a glitch.

I am somewhat biased, but I've had the book for a few weeks now and I can't say enough good things about it.

Highly recommended!

Congrats on your book! I've been looking for something like this so I'll be placing an order. I mostly use 3DS Max with mental ray so understanding lights and lighting more will give me better results. Thanks!

I just got a mail telling me the book will be available before the expected date, seems like it really was a glitch!

I bought this because your online tutorials were so well written, and the book is even better. Thanks for writing it, I'll be recommending it to my lighting class for next semester.

I'm going to buy it just because your online tutorials have helped me so much in the past, I've learned from them, so thank you for that and for the book.

Best wishes!

Thanks for all the positive feedback, I really appreciate it!

For anyone who likes the tutorial it's worth noting that the book does go into a lot more depth, and that the sections on the creative use of lighting (for composition and story-telling) add a whole new dimension to the subject.

Just ordered my copy :). Your lighting tutorial is the best intro to lighting primer I've ever read and instantly classic- so I know the book will be awesome.

Just received my copy today.
The first impression is excellent! I showed it to some of my lighter colleagues and they're going to order it as well.
And considering this was only 31$ including shipping from the US, this is truely value for money. Great job Richard!
