View Full Version : Maya's modeling in comparison to Lightwave
dfusion 10-24-2003, 10:57 AM Generally speaking how is Maya's modeler workflow compared to Lightwave? Are there Layers like Lightwave? How is Maya's NURB modeler in comparison to Lightwave?

hmm..
i still can not recall having heard that any lightwave version has NURBS..
dont mess up hypernurbs or whatever they call it and NURBS..
that is like comparing a cucumber with a cray computer
cheers

What is this.. Light....uhm.. wave.... you speak of?
I think most LW'er quite enjoy Maya, sure they bitch now and then in messageboards about missing tools, but.. I'm sure there is just as many ex-Maya users annoyed in that regard on LW boards as well..
Grab the PLE and see if you like it, one thing you will notice is Maya's excellent History driven by its node based architecture, and unlimited undos.. gotta love it :)
Maya's modeling is ok once you download a dozen or so plugins/plugin packs from various parts of the 'net, I guess.
Yes, Maya has layers.
No, LightWave doesn't have NURBS. If you meant subds, then Maya does have that, but it's not as easy to use, meaning you don't just hit the tab key to toggle.
Try the Maya PLE and see for yourself.
I find after some time, that Maya modeling (like CIM said with some plugins if need be) is just as comfortable as LW. You just have to get used to doing the Maya way or LW way. There are about the same advantages and disadvantages in both. Don't let those LW evangelists spread a one-way message.

CIM, i gotta disagree on this one. Download a lot of plugins? Why man>? I never used any plugins other than maya's original ones. Now, i got Byron's bevel, but i made all my stuff with regular maya's tools.
well if working much slower as you ca is what you want than you can go on without plugins and scripts but trust me try em out and use the ones you like, it will save you a lot of time
Cause Maya doesnt have built in edge loop, or edge ring select at the most basic level. Of course LW doesnt even have edges so....

I like Maya's modeling better personally. More speed.

But Maya has Byron !!!!!! And his very great BPT (http://www.visualboo.com/~byronimo/mainpage.htm)
The best PolyTools on Earth !!!

And yes I know about Byron. I've got my own BPT :D and it rocks.

>>>Cause Maya doesnt have built in edge loop
I'm confused cause you can select edges and you can have Maya expand the selection of edges (edge loops) .. it's just not as intuitive or robust as some other programs. I'm talking about the select continous edges function or is what is thought as edge loops something different?
Woah. I had missed Select Continuous Edges. Nice.
As far as edge loops being different I think that's all they are, but I'm a but curious how philosophically they continue through non-quad poles.

There are degree threshold setting in the options for that command.
However for the most part I have allways understood that you really want to avoid non-quads .. especially if you plan to convert to sub-d's as it will funkify the topology for lack of a better word.
are you talking about poles or faces?
nevermind. I just didn't remember odd topology due to non-quad poles. I know it re-routes the flow a bit which has interesting results, but as for pursuing quad-only poles, that would be impossible and utterly pointless.
I modeled my first pic in LW here

For me, Maya has an nicer workflow.

I'm just pee'd at how maya doesn't have a symmetry tool where u can just tweak a few verts after having done your textures and uv's, and have the changes updated on the other side.
I'm sick of making instanced duplicates and then chopping the model in half, and merge edges, then flip uv's , just coz i moved a few verts ...
Does anyone know of any mel scripts that can do a symmetry function to maybe update a few verts..
Marlboro-Man,
The bonusTool 5.0.1 has the mirror cut. This is what you want. At alias website, there's a video demonstration of that mirror cut tool.

sorry Rock
I wasn't looking for a mirror cut. I was looking more for a symmetry updater..something that updates vert locations from the left to right. ...
Reason is I just want to tweak a bit sometimes, after I've done my uv's and all, and possibly even after I've painted textures. Just some small tweaks, and i don't wanna have to re mirror the model, stitch it, and mirror UV's. it's just a pain in the @ass.
But thanks..... :)
