View Full Version : er..anyone know of rotoscoping tutorials/help?
PeaceOfMind 10-24-2003, 08:46 AM hey guys,
Do any of you out there know anywhere on the net where I can learn the basics of rotoscoping? I really want to learn it, but I'm having a tough time getting started on how to go about it (or even what rotoscoping 'completely' entails). Any direct advice would be helpful too, I'd love to take baby steps into getting knee-deep in compositing one day. Thanks a bunch.

I wrote that one while working for eyeon. It might also help to download a demo of Digital Fusion to attempt the tutorial with. Then you can apply the techniques to your application of choice.

Rotoscoping has many definitions depending on what your doing, but I am guessing your refering to compositing since your in this forum.
Rotoscoping can be divided into many different things.
1.) Creating mattes/alpha channels for cutting out/isolating objects in a plate that you want to move/modify/erase/add an effect to, etc.... The matte is usally created by either painting a b&w image or using spline tools. The tutorial Jayk2k posted explains this part.
2.) Painting frame by frame is another sort of rotoscoping. Whether it is painting in or out something. Like for example a boom mike in the frame or a person from the film crew in the reflection on a glass window.
3.) Dust-Busting is really a sort of rotoscoping. Pretty much you are just painting out all the dust particles/blotches and other artifacts that appear on the scanned images you get from the developing/scanning(telecine) process.

Dustbusting is a pretty simple operation. Just about any program with painting abilities and a clone tool can do it.
Unless you mean automated dustbusting? Thats alot more expensive.

Hi Guys
I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd give it a shot.
Does anyone have any decent tutorial, or just even basic step by step info on how to do rotoscoping? The tutorial at the top of this thread is no longer there as far as I can tell...
I've been asked if I can create a similar effect to that which happens when Frodo puts on his ring in LOTR. It'll be working off live plates, and not blue/greenscreened... I've not really done anything like this before, and am in drastic need of help...
Beaker I'm mainly aiming this at you, as you seem to be the man to go to about this kind of thing...
Cheers
Matt

Alas, I'm not The Man, but I could chip in my 2 cents. Recently www.VFXtalk.com (http://www.VFXtalk.com) held a challenge involving a heck-load of rotoscoping (can I cross promote a rival site like that?). You might want to head down to the VFX103 Challenge post on the forums to have a look at some approaches. Just so you know, the original footage was of one of the site mods running across an empty road with no cars.
It's fairly easy to get decent results rotoscoping - the hard part will be to get the background effect believable, if you're trying to do the LOTR ring-vision thing.
I totally recommend this white paper as well. It has some great tips in it from a true veteran:

Thanks Yossarian!
That white paper is pretty interesting. I'll be doing this in After Effects, or possibly Mokey, as Ive just downloaded the demo,
If anyone out there could run me through this in simple step by step way, I'll be forever in their debt....
Thanks again
Matt

The tutorial I wrote is now located here:
http://www.eyeonline.com/Web/EyeonWeb/Techniques/tips_tricks/newtips/tip_105.aspx
It basicly just mentions all the things listed in the white paper, but might still be worth reading to get a slightly different perspective.

Hi Guys
Thanks for advices so far
Ive found out more about this project now, and am unsure if what Im being asked to do actually IS rotoscoping...
The effect in LOTR when frodo puts on the ring. when you see through his eyes, and the image is very distorted, as if all the information is being sucked away from the central point of interest, in a wavy, almost fiery kind of way.
Does anyone know a way of achieving this in After Effects?
Thanks again :)
