what is a good way to start making a face...what tool to use and what geometry to start with if im doing subdivision and nurbs. any tutorials about this??

Have you tried Get>Primitive>Model>Face?

You can start with a cube and extrude some parts, refines others, moving points....
There is a good tutorial about this on the Cumbria Training CDs, perhaps you could order the first CD (modeling) to check this out.

besides what atyss said you can also start with the polygon tool and draw a region (like the mouth) and the refine it etc.
or you start with NURBS and later concert them to mesh.

some people start from the eye and work they're way out.
