View Full Version : Camera Navigation of a Human Model
Maive 10-24-2003, 01:32 AM Hello,
I have just joined this forum and after doing a search, I didn't really find a thread that addressed my particular inquiry: After constructing a human model with slight animation, where would I go from there so that I can make it interactive by allowing the user to control camera navigation (zoom in/out, manipulate view of model, etc.) in the final product?
I've been referred to Director/Shockwave 3D, but I've never used that program before so I wouldn't know the codes >_<"
I'm familiar with Flash actionscripting but.. I don't believe Flash can create a format that allows user interaction, especially the manipulation of a model 360 degrees :X

You could use QuicktimeVR to do this, and then it could be a nice rendered version of the model rather than real-time. LW supports saving QtVR as one of its animation render formats...

Thanks, I go check it out ^^

Kretin, how do you save something as a QuicktimeVR format? I have tried doing that from LW and have no idea what to do with it after that. It never seems to open like all the QTVRs I see online like at Real Estate sites and stuff.

You can do it in Flash to some extent. You can render out the frames, import them into flash, make a movie symbol then move this movie to the stage where you can drop in invisible buttons with the actions to play through the movie according to mouse position or you can make a little interface for it with buttons and that sort of things.... oh man my eyes are hurting for some weird reason...

Yeah, something like you want to do is definitely possible with some relatively simple Flash knowledge. As described before, make a Movie Clip with invisible buttons that scroll through the Movie Clip in whatever order you need it to according to the arrow they are scrolling over or pushing on (for simple rotating around left and right at least...not sure about zooming in and out though).

zooming in and out can be done. I did it for a map. The tricky part would be choosing the right resolution for the rendered images so they don't look too bad when zoomed in all the way.
I'm a little rusty with action script scince I've been doing less and less Flash work (an more LW  ) otherwise I would of written the action and post it. Maybe ask in the Flash forum.

Perhaps the camera navigation could be done using Python programming? I think it's only a few lines of code; if anyone could help me out on that..

I think it's best to render it in QuicktimeVR as kretin said. there are pan, zoom, and rotate functions in QuicktimeVR. Python programing won't be of any help, unless you have a complier, and have an extensive knowledge in graphics programming.

I followed this tutorial to make a Quicktime VR.

and this is what I made:

That's cool, that's what I like to go for but, does QtVR support user's application of colors? Like if I made a color palette for changing the model's skin color for instance.

Yeah that tutorial is good. Most of the QtVR's that I make are just 360's of a model, so I just use like 120 columns and 1 row, so it's real quick and easy to setup.
Maive, with QtVR you're stuck with the rendered image. You could possibly put together a flash or director movie with embedded QtVR's each rendered with different colors, and include user controls to change color (which changes the movie being displayed) but if you want that kind of control you might just be better off doing it all in one of those apps...
