View Full Version : Any news that there will be Xeons with FSB 800?
allawy 10-23-2003, 11:57 PM Hi;
I was going to buy Opterons, then Xeons, then Opterons, then Xeons, then Opterons, then Xeons, AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Anyway, the probelm is that my P4 with FSB 800 amazed me, I loved it, don't want to go back to 533 anymore.
Is there any news about Xeons run at FSB 800?

The P4 EE (Extreme edition) is basically a re-labled Xeon with 800mhz FSB. You can't run it in dual processor as it's not really a Xeon either, it's the same pin configuration as a P4. Don't know how long or when they'll be releaseing the Xeons with 800mhz fsb, if at all. Next couple of months should be interesting though.

I just found some stuff about this issue, the new Xeon with FSB 800 is going to be available in early 2004, it will support PCI Express that everybody talk about and I don't what is it...
anyway, this Xeon is called "JayHawk" or "Nocona " not sure, maybe both...
I'm thinking to get me a dual Xeon 2.8 533, with 2G of DDR333 and that Asus motherboard (PC-DL Deluxe), for that I have to sell my 2.4HT FSB 800 and 1G DDR400 AND my 9800pro (I will get back to my old radeon 7500), I hope I will not regret this.

I can confirm what allaway is saying.
Last I heard a 800 FSB* Xeon was slated for Q1 2004 release.
Originally it was only going to be 667 (666 anyone? heh), but that was bumped up. There are even rumors of faster buses...though I doubt they're true.
*= or faster

I read that too, the faster bus I mean, 1066 maybe works with DDR533 I guess, anyway, WHO CARES :) we need the FSB 800 first...
But still what I heard is that the higher bus is only for prescott, which is the new P4 or P5 not new Xeon, you want a rumer, well, prescott may support the x86 64 extension just like opteron does, but not sure about the new Xeon, it will really be a big hit to the market if the next xeon is FSB 800 and 64bit ready.
The 64bit extension is been the most talked about these days, Opteron seemed a wonderful solution first, I though it was a real 64bit proccessor (like Itanium and the rest), but it's a 32 with 64 extension, these peoccessors are monstores, but then Xeon always beat them in 3D rendering which is what I need.

Allawy, I was just wondering if you had switched over to the dual Xeon setup your were looking at. I am looking in to buying the same system that you had previously mentioned and was just wondering (if you have made the switch) how it worked out for you.
t.
ps. Make sure that the ram is Dual Channel DDR333, that's what the PC-DL Deluxe requires.

The current CG challenge prize is an Alienware PC with dual Xeon 3.2 GHz with 800MHz FSB & 2MB Cache. So I guess they will be making these soon (January)? Or did I read that incorrectly?

Well, I'm intending to make a benchmark test between both my old system and my new one (So that I can feel good, cause I kinda don't like to go back in the FSB), and poplish them here with thanks to all of you people that helped me making up my mind :)
The new PC may not be ready before 2 weeks from now, this is how things work in this part of the world, the Asus motherboard is not available in my country so I have to order it overseas.
The funny thing is, everytime I go to my computer dealer to try to build a dual xeon (for the last 2 months), he insiste that I have to buy dual opteron :), and I get back with confusion to the internet to see if someone have tested both, I can only say that I saw a comparison...
in XSI Base, someone posted that he compared dual opteron 242 and his dual Xeon 1.8, and that although the opteron bet the 1.8, the difference was not that much (30 sec. or so), so imagine what 2.8 would do.
Still I hope I'm making the right choise, this time it's hard to recover from a hardware mistake for me :)
The Challenge, I subscriped, but I know I have no chance to win, I know that :)
