First off: ATI or Nvidia?

I prefer ATI, but I've also heard NVidias work better with Lightwave.

I'm looking for a midrange card. Nothing high-end.

I dont want to spend any more than like... 200 or 250 (US) dollars.

Thanks!

nVidia.

It I was forced to use ATI, I'd have to have two. One to poop on and a second ATI card to cover it up.:scream:

i love ati's espicially for gaming, but for 3d they kinda suck.
i have a radeon 8500 128 and get a lot of errors in lightwave, especially in moddeler...my friend tried the LW demo on an old p3 with an nvidia vanta 16 mb card, and allthough it was way slower it had none of the errors.plus i run houdini apprentice, and that is DREADFULLY slow with that video card...when i drag something i have to wait for it to catch up!!!! i looked into it on the houdini website and sure enough..it was the card.

i think it comes down to openGL...that's where nvidia shines, and more for 3d
ati performs better in directx...games
hate to say it, but for 3d maybe go nvidia

ATI cards get wacky results when for any reason AA or Anisotropic Filtering are on. The problems are rather related to the quality of the drivers (although ATI has worked very much this year).

Nevertheless, ATI cards are fantastic hardware.

I have had ATI since 3DFx disappeared. I will switch to an nVidia card next month (Quadro4 980XGL) because I am fed up with these &#@# ! drivers.

I don't understand why everyone craps on ATI so much. I use a 9800 Pro with Lightwave and I haven't had a single glitch. Runs great, and I've run all my games at high resolution with all eye candy turned on with power to spare.

nvidia drivers are terrible when it comes to anything other than simple opengl and 3d programs.

ati are the ones with by far the better and more stable drivers. the latest many nvidia driver releasess havn't been anything but cheating with image quality to get just decent results in games. unstable and bugged would describe it pretty well, compared to ati latest releases.

also when it comes to aa and ansi. filtering, ati produce the by far better quality in directx.

thanks for your input. I did not even know that

nevertheless, when I forgot to swith AA and Anisot off, it was not possible to work with modeler.

Anyway, I think, similar to all other PC-related issues, this may be a problem of equilibrium and "compatibility" between the various components of the machines. Mine does not work with an ATI card, I will test an nVidia ;)

In fact I own ATi Radeon 9600 Pro and I have AA+AF on and my LW's views don't screw up. Maybe it just has been a problem with older drivers since I'm using the latest, Catalyst 3.8:s.

Other than that, everything you need to know has already been said.

despite what i said ati has come a LONG way...i only have experience with the 8500 and down...the new ones are probably just as good or better then any nvidia...
