Hmm feathers are a tricky one...
Check out this tutorial - http://www.worley.com/TutFiles/TeskaDragon/index.html
It's for dragon scales, but I'm sure it'll work nicely for feathers too ;)
You'll probably need to set up some complex combing for it though.
As for the rat, try making him brown I think. Brown rats are more common (well they are here). Then do something about his shininess - he's way too shiney, he almost looks plastic. Take the specularity and gloss down on the Sasquatch shading.

I did the feathers on my bird using Saslite. I think for a crow I would model some of the feathers and use texture maps.

Igid! peach fuzz!
I assume you have Sasquatch and not the lite, so
:shame:
go through the manual. I mean, not at your computer. Just like a good book. Brew yourself a coffee, sit somewhere comfortable and read it cover to cover. You haven't used any of the combing, length, clumping or courseness settings, and likely none of the style settings, shadow settings etc.
So, rt(very wonderful, entertaining)m.
And then play with other settings, reverse engineer them and just play with different settings. Here are some of mine:

Hmmm I've never done a hand texturing tutorial, you must be thinking of someone else :)
But skin texturing is skin texturing - it's just details like wrinkles and veins that differ from body part to body part, and as long as you have decent photographic reference, you should be fine :)
Incidently, if you're suggesting that you're using an illegal version of the Sasquatch plugin, I would highly suggest that you refrain from doing so, and purchase the plugin legitimately.
The guys from Worley do drop in here from time to time, and it wouldn't really be all that great if you ended up with a massive fine and potential sentence for software piracy, now would it? ;)
