Is there a function I don't know about, oher then soft selection that selects nearby verts? if 2 or more verts are close to eachother I can only select them together.. never one at a time!

There is an option with the edit spline to do area selection.
Maybe it's turned on with a big value in the type in box (size of area). You will find it in the selection roll out of the edit spline.
Could be something else.

Area Select, for anchors, will do that to you if you have it set high enough.
