View Full Version : character: The Imp - C&C requested
Valandar 10-23-2003, 06:53 PM And by C&C, I mean actual advice on improving it, and noting what you DO like about it...
Well, I'm up to the body... getting ready to start work on the hands, then the legs. The body isn't going to be EXTREMELY detailed, since it'll be mostly covered up during the scene I have planned for him.

But here's how he looks so far... once again, there are no textures on him - those are just "placeholder" materials, with semi-random colors so I can see what's where...

And, as promised, here's a low-res wireframe for him:

He's a little blocky and hard looking. Perhaps get him a little more rounded out and organic looking.

Okay... how's this?
I "rounded" him off a bit... and finished the basic form for the hands and legs. Still gotta detail them, though...

Well, here's some textured pictures (still gotta texture the lips)...
Any opinions?
Any at all?

Well, my Imp is feeling lonely, neglected, and a mite disgruntled... only one post of C&C so far?

It's kinda hard to make him better if people just kinda stay silent on the matter... well, time to go finish making the morph targets...

fairly good so far, his feet need more work, and his eyes dont look like they dont belong to him at all, so fix that as well
the only thing I see that I think you could improve on is the lip structure. Rgiht now I think they kinda make him look like a fat cat >.< I suggest tightening them up a little, possibly molding a bit of pucker out of them.
Otherwise keep working how you are.

A pretty good start but the model still needs some work before textures. The headshape doesn't really feel like it would work. There are things like having too small a skull for those eyes. It feels like they should pop out on the sides or at least only allow for a leafthin skullbone.
The skin also seems too tight and thin, especially around the eyesockets and around the nostrils.
What needs most work though are how you incorporate the eyes. They are so large and draw so much attention that you should spend more time in making them believable. Not only in the shaders...the specular is too dull and there is no "spark of life" in them...but also in how they are embedded in the skull. Think of making folds for the eyelids, thickness of skin where the lids bunch up when open (and such huge lids would lead to quite some bunching I think), tearducts, etc.
The body looks better but it still lacks detail. You had the right ideas...there's the delta, biceps and the underarm muscles but they don't seem like you spent any time looking at reference of these muscles to understand how they really look and intereact.
The torso looks pretty good but the legs again show some problems, especially the square knees and edged calves.
Overall it's a pretty good model but you'll want to put some more work into how this alien anatomy works to really make it believable.
Keep it up!

Looking good so far! A couple of things though. If your scene calls for a closeup of the face, you will need more segments in the eye geometry, especially around the iris. The square knee caps don't look finished. There is also some weird creasing in the ankle area, particularly on the inside.
Overall he's looking good but needs a little polish.

Wow.
I wish I had gotten such advice earlier. I've already spent two-three days texturing, and another day and a half creating dozens of morph targets for what exists already. Oh, well, I guess that's my fault for not being known around here...
Meanwhile, before I scrap a half week of work, here's a pic of some of the morphs in action:
