Title: The Piano
Name: Barbara Witkowska
Country: Poland
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay, ZBrush
I'd like to present a visualization of Queluz National Palace ballroom, Portugal. Scene was prepared for Evermotion Archinteriors 23 collection. It is based on photography (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pal%C3%A1cio_Queluz_interior_1.JPG).
Whole scene was created in 3ds Max, some more complex details, e.g. caryatids sculpted in ZBrush. Rendered in VRay, with PS post production. Critiques & feedbacks are more than welcome.
Few close ups.

Really a great model and definetely very good price for such a detailed scene. Everything looks proper executed and the shading and lighting is superb as well. Regarding the original photo, i think the room is a few meters wider than your version, but anyway that's not a big deal.
Very cool work, I like it a lot:)

Thanks for all the warm words.
Destrega - really appreciate your comment. You're right. Proportions of the interior probably are slightly different comparing to the original, now I can see it. I think it may be a matter of ceiling height.
As my excuse I have to say that architect of this interior had to be a real genius: this ballroom was designed on the plane of five smaller rooms. I think it's amazing he managed to make it looks perfectly symmetrical. In fact, it isn't: e.g. look at the top of pilasters on the reference photography. On the hall's left side they are curved, while on the other - straight. Such a small 'cheats' made it really difficult to work out the proportions, so I decided to simplify it a bit.
Pokoy - thanks. If you're patient I'll show hi-res versions of these works. Still I'm afraid it won't be sooner than mid-May, cause I'm having long-awaited holidays till then :)
Alex95, TheKrakan, JBest - thanks, imagine all these baroque ornaments were made in reality, physically! No 'copy', no 'undo'! ;)
Dan-Cable, OSBOURNE, Arkaiko - thanks guys, I'm glad you like it
Gyarados - indeed it took me a while to model it :)
Mr-Evil-studio - thanks, I wanted gold to shine a lot.
Edi - thank you, means a lot. I do my best :)

This is an amazing piece, outstanding attention to detail. It's very impressive! How long did it take?
I do think it could be a little warmer, like the photo... deeper in tone with more contrast, less bloom to add some detail in the curtains, less reflection in the piano and darker golds would make it sing imho.
Very nice introduction to cgs, welcome.:applause:

SebastianJW - thank you, I had great fun sculpting these pieces in ZBrush
rabieart - thanks :)
Romanthony - wow, fantastic interpretation!
ebasta - thanks, I'm really proud that my image has been taken here to this section
PixelGrade - thanks, they say that lightning and composition plays the biggest role in the final effect
Neb - thank you, really great to hear it from you
lechu - Hi, Lechu! Thanks a lot :)
coolturens, Giiyom - thanks, it was a lesson in patience to sculpt all these ornaments :)
johnnyh66 - haha, indeed it took me a while to model this scene :) U think it would be better to warm it up a bit? In my opinion this is rather drawback of the reference photo that it's so warm. There is incorrect white balance on the photo, isn't it? But maybe, in the other hand, I made my image too cool.. I bet it depends on screen. As to detail in the curtains..I had to choose what to show: cloth or flood of light. Sometimes it's better to leave things imprecise.. Finally I must agree on piano reflections: could be more varied. Anyway, thanks a lot for constructive criticism and nice invitation :)
lithningblue - thank you, gold material is quite simple:
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/1152/goldshader.jpg
For sculptures shaders I also added extra maps to bump slot (usually normal maps) and to refl. glossiness slot (a mix of above-showed map and cavity map prepared in ZBrush)
alexichabane - thanks! that's what I wanted to achieve
seNse-3d, artursamenezes, javiermolina - thanks :)
ykmn - thank you, I put some effort to make the floor looks believable
Bubbaloo - it's an illusion. Chairs back supports surely are NOT floating above the seat cushions. First they go through cushions before they connect with chairs legs construction. But you are absolutely right, they may look so. I should have added some AO map there.
Highelf - Thank you :)
cserbuj - Thank you very much, nice to read such words. It's the best award to me. Btw, I love the piano too :)

This is the type of work I really want to pursue in 3D. I have a question, could you get such a perfect render in Mental Ray? I try and try, but my renders still look cartoonish, and yours is REAL. I want V-Ray SO BAD but can't afford it. Absolutely gorgeous!

Thank you people for all the comments!
RickToxik nice to meet Evermotion's fan :)
=LuxX= thank you for your appreciation. The transparent piano effect is a matter od postproduction. You won't have such an intensive impression of transparency when you look at the previous (smaller) version where I did remember to fix it :).
Its-all-about-cg thank you so much! Lightning & composition are my priorities :)
AaronFord I have to admit that VRay is the engine I'm currently used to, but I'm pretty sure, that you can achieve similar effect in Mental Ray too. Just look at the following examples:
http://old-boy.cgsociety.org/gallery/654983/
http://www.evermotion.org/modelshop/show_product/archexteriors-for-mental-ray-vol-1/17/0/0/

I'll keep my fingers crossed for your improvements in realistic renderings in Mental Ray!
threedivisionstudios thanks :) it was just great fun and good opportunity to learn.
RasoulValli thank you very much for kind words. I think that's great CGS gives you motivation to hard work!
SuperCoon wow, that's great you like it!
Judge2x thank you for your comment. I believe that man does't need to be master in sth to has his own impressions about it, need he? I would appreciate your ctiticism very much :). I really would love to tell precisely how long it took me to prepare these visualization, but in fact I had been doing few more works in the meantime so it's very hard to find out now..
Kungfuuu I suppose you can achieve similar result in v-ray for Maya.
johnnyringo thank you very much; as to piano bench cushion - it is centered, but I might have scaled it down a bit by mistake..

this work is absolutely stunning!, the level of detail is insane, what piece of music did you end up putting on the piano?
how much time did it take you to complete this? would love to see the breakdowns when you get a chance

08-04-2011, 09:23 PM
Thanks, Elizabeth for such a warm comment. What piece of with music did I put on the piano? Of course Beethoven's 'For Elise' ;)
You asked for some breakdowns.
I based on reference photo quite precisely but to make the frame more interesting, I decided to add few details like row of chairs in the foreground and the piano with music sheet at the corner of the hall (thanks for advice, mates from Evermotion!).
Below you can see examples of models used in scene: I exported most of ornaments on walls and ceiling to vrayproxy and made instances. I also segregated them into separate layers to keep order and make viewport react quicker. As I mentioned in my previous post, some models were prepared in ZBrush.
http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/415/modelsc.jpg
Most of shaders are quite simple, I used almost only standard VRayMats with diffuse, reflection and bump/normal maps. The biggest challenge here were chandeliers' crystals and parquet - I wanted it to look noteworthy and with no visible texture seems.
The lighting is even more simple: as the main light I used VRaySun with custom sky map. Additional lights are arranged around chandeliers and one more behind af half-open door.
http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/9949/lightsetup.jpg
The scene was rendered in VRay, in Gamma 2.2. The best fun was post-production, when I added chandeliers' bulbs and some bloom and color correction.
Jerusha, michaelawesome - thank you very much :) I'm really happy you like it!

I don't like at all the "main character" which is the Piano. The reflection should be dark, as we see in this picture:
http://www.musicalpianoforte.com.mx/PianoForteAdm/Catimagenes/115_pianos%20varios%20abril%20128.jpg
As seen, the black painted wood gives very dark reflections. Also use the Fresnel options of your engine. Because different angles does not reflect in the same way.
As for the scenario does not know which picture I like better, the real or CG: It's great.
Cheer.

Thank you all for your comments. I don't use facebook, kronique :)
hi gyptiaedes
I'm really glad you like the scenery of my work. As to the piano I can't agree with you. There are many ways of finishing it. It can has bright polish, or be matt. Also its glossiness depends on lightning. Take a look at examples below, please:
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/364/pianos.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/687/pianos.jpg/)
I've chosen the glossy one, cause I thing it suits such rich and ornamental interior better. Of course I did used fresnel reflection with quite high IOR value: 2.
Hope my answer was exhaustive. Anyway, thanks for your comment :)
Cheers!

In my view, be considered "professional photos" is not the best to get a good realism. Do not forget that the company StockFresh take pictures and edit, something very common in publicity photos, for example in this picture you can see an increase of exposure and brightness added digitally. Be very discrete about has to be dark or light in a changed image to be real and convincing.
As this image of the same company, you do not know if a photo or created with Realflow with a rendering engine, no doubt the image was retouched (can be digital retouching or just ambient lighting usually false) so it is difficult or impossible to know whether real or CG.
http://stockfresh.com/img/difference/simplicity.jpg
Anyway, the "error" is in any render engine, let it be unbiased or biased. I took the time to ask without having an "eye-CG" also said it is not real, very fake piano.
What I say is just to comment on an advanced level to which you have, maybe I'm wrong but I'm just saying what I said to my eye.
greetings and congratulations on being in the gallery, however my only criticism is to go beyond.
