"Sony Pictures Animation is moving forward with plans to turn its Oscar-winning animated short film The Chubbchubbs! into a full length CGI feature, hiring screenwriters Dan Wilson and Dave Gilbreth to write the script. The two most recently penned Smart and Smarter for New Line Cinema.

No decision has been made about a director for the project, which follows an intergalactic janitor-turned-singer who's unwittingly befriended the most dangerous race of cute-but-lethal critters ever known. Loyal but fierce, they are called upon to save the universe from a sinister plan."

let the skepticism ensue! Cubbchubbs was great as a short, but can it really be turned into a successful feature-length film? Survey says not likely;)

Actually I think it could work. I laughed so hard watching that short. I think the telling part is that this will be a new story as opposed to have the story from the short expanded to a feature length. I wonder if they'll show again the short before the film so as to setup the characters to those who missed the short.

I wonder why eric Armstrong hasn't been tapped to direct? Is he tied up on live action projects?

With the short used as a Prolog to the films storyline it really could work. (at least it has a chance)

Star Wars spoofs are so overdone. The Chubb Chubbs was mildly funny as a result.

The character designs were another story. Very creative and full of life. Let's hope they put a lot into the storyline.

I kind of sense a Sci Fi spoof film in the same way Shrek spoofs fairy tales.

It could be good. Let's wait and see. A big congrats to all involved for getting something greenlit!

malducin - I heard Eric Armstrong went to Dreamworks right after he got his oscar......

I work with Eric at Dreamworks, even though what you say is a bit exaggerated.

I am curious to see what will come out of Sony Animation. I hope it goes well. I am real curious about the Imageworks project Polar Express to begin with.

Oh please no... :hmm:

Chubb Chubbs didn't make for a good short, I really hope they don't stretch it to a movie.

:annoyed:

roger, thanks for the info. I guess you mean Dreamworks Feature Animation as opposed to PDI/Dreamworks? Doesn't matter I'm sure he's involved in something cool..

I don't know, there was lot of nice stuff on this short...
but not so funny, and yes really overdone jokes...
is it enough to make a feature ??? I hope they have more ideas to put in.

well Disney has made Pirates of the teacup in a small small world from the ride...lack of inspiration brings to not so bad stuff sometimes....why not...

but from ChubbChubbs and above all "early bloomer"(not very nice and all this for this ?) I don't think they are ready for the big thing.

Sony has hired a lot of talent that has feature animation experience... they also have two Stuart Little projects behind them, so making the transition shouldn't be as bad for them as for some other places. It's still a huge difference.

Just to clarify, I am not sure that everyone knows, Dreamworks Feature Animation is creating full CG feature films these days. The studio has converted from cell based (with lots of CG, like Prince of Egypt, Spirit) to full CG, and you will see the first of many pictures when Shark Tale comes out.

sure they can do it technically !!!!

it's more a matter of subject...hope they have more original idea to put in a feature than in the short.
