I posted a question the other day regarding backdrops, at the end of the post I also added a little question about why lightwave was quiting on me so much. How much you ask more then Animation Master ever has. It all started when I added some color and reflections to my surface of my car model just to see what it would look like when it was done. Anyway I didn't mind to much that it was happaning I just figured this kind of things happen every once in a while plus like I said earlier I have used Animation Master in the past and I was use to the program quiting on me. Anyway, I have been modelling this car for the last week week and a half. I have been spending around 5 to 6 hours a day on it. I am still new to lightwave and I wanted to make a car to help me learn the software some more. Today I saved in modoler after making just one poly and then modeler quits have way through saving. Now when I try to open my car and era message appears and says there is a problem with my file. Is my countless hours of hard work trashed? Has this ever happened to anyone else? Is there any way I can fix it? It wasn't the best model in the world but I would have rather finished it. I guess I my ust have to make it again.

Dont feel bad... I know lw has quit on me a couple of times too for no reason, but think about it this way...

At least now you can use the knowledge you accumulated from the beginning and make the car even better and faster then before!! And youll see that it will happen...

Save often and work SMART, not hard.

Good luck!

I always make backups. Re-install Lightwave, and update to 7.5c. I haven't had a problem with it yet.

theres a way to get it from the temp files but i forgot how,i think you can just look in the temp folder and get it back out that way but it will only be from ur last save
make sure show all is enable in explorer or whatever it is.

I don't know if you can recover it. That happened to me before - I guess if it crashes during saving then the file is saved incomplete and thus, you get an error when trying to open it again.

In fairness, your model is gone thanks to you not saving sequential updates (ie.- car001, car002, etc.).
Live and learn. :hmm:

Try the LW hub....it should have a copy of your model in there with a completely different name I believe...it's happened to me before and I did that and it was fine....of course it didn't save some of the changes I had made to it but it was still there at least....

Documents and Settings>Profile>Local Settings>Temp>lwhub:)

hope it works for ya

don't take this the wrong way but...
there are two kinds of computer artists:

those who had a project gone bad and those who will have a project go bad.

it happens no matter what machine, RAM or OS you have.
It happened to me, It happened to you and it will happen to somebody else. The only thing you can do about it is to learn from the experience and make back ups and save incrementaly.

There are too many variables to determine exactly what happened. If you were having so many problems you had two options... contact Tech support which is free and make backups apparently you chose none of those.

Send me your object and I'll try to open it for you and see if it works....

We all have been there, I learned the hard way.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\lwhub

Check there for copies of your model. If you don't find a copy of it there, then be sure to set your Hub Properties for Automatic Save

I am not really mad that my model is gone. I have mad several cars some I finished and some I didn't. It just that this was my first "big" model in lightwave and this happens. I guess I just have to accept it as part of my learning. For now on I will save every step under different name or at least try.

If I were you I would contact Tech support...there is no reason LW should be quiting on you so much.....They might have a solution for you that could solve your problem

It is quiting more often that Animation Master? is that physically possible. I know that there is a theoretical quantization of time down to somewhere in the femptosecond range. This must be bordering on that theoretical limit!

Seriously though, Animation Master really got on my nerves (had to use it for a class). I longed to hold my personal version of ligtwave again. I should have never strayed, please forgive me!

I know I am of no help, my brain is fried and feeling quite melodramatic.

I have NEVER, EVER had a single crash with 7.5c Layout or Modeler.

Check your video drivers.

Ditto. I think my professor said it best.

"I think all the students should be taken out to the parking lot and shot."

actually... now that I think about it... I really didn't like him... :annoyed:

A wee little script to help load your hub files .

http://www.halationstudios.com/rj/lscript

The hub is your godsend in these situations.

To echo what Chewy is saying, check your drivers. This is not neccesarily LW's fault.

Cheers,

I've never had LW quit on me like that. I've had AM crash more on me in an hour than LW has all year

seriously though. check your video drivers. maybe do a scan plugin directory on the plugin folder. That was the only time I got crashes (jpeg plugin didn't load so any model with a jpeg texture crashed it) you'd be surprised what plugin problems can do. Also make sure any downloaded plugins aren't interfering with anything. I keep them all in a jays-adv-tools folder so i can find them to replace them or remove them when needed. Try reinstalling/downloading any 3rd party plugins.

Make sure that LW can talk to the network. My firewall complained about LW trying to talk to the network. If you stopped LW from doing this then that may cause a problem.

Sometimes it can be something outside the software. I got the free version of Divx and it installs gain which is ad ware. It stops/slows almost everything on my machine. It is the other software that has crashed LW, especially when starting. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and bring up the task manager. If you see GMT running you should kill it. you'll get back alot of speed. Then uninstall it. Adware/spyware can really slow down your machine. If you have a bunch of weather thingies and email notifiers and other little odd and ends you may have a bunch of adware running causing all types of mischief.

Think outside the software :)

If all that fails then remove LW, delete the preferences and reinstall it. (I usally rename the folder then put the prefs for it in a config folder in the Lightwave folder (incase the reinstall doesn't resolve anything and i want to go back to my old tabs, plugins and such without hunting on flay.)

Oh if there is but one thing you do make sure in the hub that autosave is turned on. That saves backups of EVERYTHING you make in LW to it's temp folder. (I just do a search for LWHUB and the folder should pop up. this has everything you ever made in it. So if a few years from now you find you have no Space on your hard drive you can go to this folder and remove some stuff.

Everything that has anything to do with 3d crashes for me. LW crashes, Maya crashes, Max crashes. Maya and max atleast have the courtesy to try to save out crash files. LW don't. But on the other hand, when something in LW crashes the file is normally not corrupt. Only the recent work is gone.
Incremental filenames is they key.
model-v01.lwo
model-v02.lwo
model..............
model-v999.lwo
It only takes a second to save. Constant saving in Maya takes ages in comparison.

I think I might have miss lead you guys. The only time lightwave was crashing was on this one model. I don't think it has crashed at all on any other model I have done in the last two months. I have started my car from scatch again and I have had no problems at all with it crashing. Have about three to four hours into it. Thanks for all your guys help and suggestion.

I use Incsave, have it mapped in the lower right part of my window. I know it won't help ya now, but I fear the problem you have.

check your video drivers.

also, can be banal, but if you modeled the car with subpatch, and have some overlapping polygons, this could make Lw crash.
actually I had a crap head model with this prob. in mod was OK, but I couldn't load it in Layout because it crashed immediatly. sometime happened in mod too.:annoyed:

I agree with Remi on this one, i had no idea that files were saved here until i did a search on my PC last night and found a serious amount of stuff in my temp folder :D

Give it a go if you havn't already, even just do a search for *.lwo and see what crops up

Good luck
