Second time ive attempted to create a thread, think I hit the wrong button or something last time lol

Anyway, quick introduction, my names Chris Reilly, im an Illustration student at Plymouth university. For our last module in the second year, we have to promote ourselfs, so I thought I would tie entering dominance war into that. Ive been wanting to enter the competition since seeing the last one, it looks like a great oppertunity to learn.

On to the art:

I dont particually know what I want to do for this competition, but I have the rough idea of god of nature, or the wilds hence the title. Wasnt sure if I should post my really rough thumbnails, but it will give a better idea of my current thought process.

First set of thumbnails are digital, just jotting them down whilst thinking of the direction to go.

The second 2 sets are marker and pen, using abstract marks and the bleed of the marker on the back of the page to generate ideas.

And the last set ive just done are more refined digital sillouhettes. Not sure if I should go with a humanoid character or a creature of some sorts. Or perhaps having a humanoid god which has a pet as sort of a minion. For example combining number 6 with 8.

I havent quite decided on the medium yet, Im wondering if I should do a mixed media approach using watercolours and digital, which Ive been meaning to experiment with for awhile.

Crits, advice etc are very welcome.

Heres some sketches of the god character. Sorry about the quality of the scans, uni scanners arent that great.

Front, side view, and back view. Had trouble drawing the back and sides, I havent done any character turnarounds before so it was quite a challenge.

I think I will pursue the design as if the character is a God summoned at the end of a dungeon by cultists.

I didnt really like the direction i was going with the previous design so I continued to develop my idea. Ive now gone with a humanoid character.

I decided to go with the idea that this is a goddess that is made up of roots, is sort of nymph/elf like, whilst mixing different personality traits of nature into her design. Perhaps have roots with thorns, trees or horns growing out of her head, a mutated weapon like arm made up of roots, vines and so on to perhaps show the darker side of nature, whilst having elements like flowers growing out of some of the roots to suggest the nicer side?

I also had the idea of perhaps she was a hunter like goddess, since she is the god of the wilds, and so would have some kind of hunter elements such as a skin of a creature on her shoulder, im leaning towards making it a dragon to emphasise a character that is massive, and not to be messed with. As well as some kind of weapon/staff - which I will try and relate to the design.

designs for a possible illustration im not quite sure what to do yet.

And a quick digital sketch which i havent cleaned up yet just to show where i currently am.

Line drawing for the goddess. Just need to add details, line weight etc. Going to do a close up of the head, and the arm for the model sheet I think.

Added some more details, fleshed out the dragon, and line weights. Not sure about the other arm, was going for a grown out twig/root, type thing.

Edit: added a base colour version

Havent managed to do much work in the last couple of days, my computer decided that now was the time for it to finally die lol Had to replace the monitor and the graphics card, everythings working now. So heres a wip for the final illustration, ive just done a rough sketch so far.

Thinking of having a summoning scene where the logo for cgsociety is the sigil/glpth used for the summoning, with a strange aray of creatures gathered for it. It was meant to be a war scene at the start but I altered it slightly in the this direction. I think I might try to give a preparation for war vibe to the painting. With my god of the wilds character as the WMD thats just been spawned :D

Will aim to get a clean line drawing done in the next 2 days.

second pass of line work, going to aim for a painting finish so the lines will eventually go, so decided to save time and not go and do a third pass to sort out the line weight etc

Think I have the design, overall look in place now.

I did some colour thumbs and a lighting rough. Also ive added an edited email I sent to my tutor so its more clear what I am planning to do next.

''
Iím planning to start the painting in values first, and then colourise it later with one of these schemes.

I think I will mix the three colour schemes together for the final, having a dominating green like in the first thumbnail, but with the reds and yellows for the trees from the other two thumbnails. I think a saturated (mostly grey) complimentary colour for the foreground characters will work best such as yellow, or red.

Lighting wise, I think the primary light source will be the top left where the trees break, and the glow from the sigil being the secondary light will hopefully help describe the forms, and add some interesting rim lights. I think having a mix of dark and lights around the painting will give it a moody look as well.

The character seems to pop with a lighter background or if I have a dark background with a light value for the character, so Ill keep it as atmospheric fog in the colour of the sky mixed with the base colours of the surrounding trees. I think keeping the cave like overhang to the left of the painting dark will help contrast the brighter values of the character and middle ground, and it provides a section of contrast with the left tree branches and location of the primary light source.

I like the idea of having darker foreground characters and I think the dark foreground, brighter mid ground, darker character, then brighter background will hopefully make the painting more interesting.

There was torches in the original design, but Im not sure if I should include them or not, I originally added them to provide a light source to describe the forms that are in the shadow but I think with the oversaturated colours from the sigil would naturally add bounce light to the forms anyway. And I want to play with detail a bit so having too much in the middle would add less contrast with the detail I want to add into the character to help it stand out.

My goal at the moment is to get the value painting done by friday then I can use the weekend for colour, as the value painting is the the bulk of the work as mentioned the colour will be very easy to add later. ''

I like your tone values, the image reads really well. And I prefer ur first color study the most, where ur goddess blends in with the background, but she's still visible due to some contrasted colors that r popping out. Maybe just add more brown hues to the foreground army like in 2nd and 3rd example. Good luck :)

Heres my first colour pass. I decided to tilt the head of the character upwards and slightly to the left, I thought it looked better than the previous version which had her looking downwards and I think made her less expressive. It was a real pain finding reference for that, ended up screen capping from a boudicca documentry to get something similar to the pose lol

Decided to make the foreground characters have bronze armour, as I wanted to have more materials than just the leathery armour they had on. Will start to render them tomorrow, just added their base colour for now.

NinjaA55N: Thank you, and for your advice. Ive started adding brown hues to the foreground characters as you suggested.

This is the version I am going to give in for marking at uni, still a few things I want to do with it, like improving the edges, the background, and adding textures. Will hopefully get that done in the next few days. Will put together the work flow sheet later today, first lunch lol

Edit: Heres my final workflow sheet.

Hi heres my final model sheet and my final illustration. The model sheet was so big I had a lot of trouble saving it, hopefully it hasnt lost too much quality in saving it as a smaller size.
