Lose the lens flare! :D
Seriously though... I think you need to push your ideas a bit further. The contest calls for a totally alien scene and, with the exception of the planet on the horizon, your scene looks like something in the western US.
For example... Why should it be a pool of water? Why not a pool of molten metal, acid - or even jello?
You say your scene is on a moon... well, the gravity on the moon is 1/6th that of earth's, so all of the mountains and other natural structures could be six times taller! And they'd probably be really skinny and fragile looking... See what I mean?
And don't "think outside the box" for this contest - burn the box.
Good Luck!

i know the lens flare was tacky but just a test! i know where your coming from i realised last night that i wasn't think as alien as i could! im working on a new environment but i like the pools, thanks for the comments!
mbatten
10-25-2003, 11:12 PM
I really like the depth of the pool, it makes it look like it forms a tube and winds down into the core of the planet. It reminds me of Yellowstone Park and all those hotsprings. Maybe you could play off of that idea: little pools that emanate from the core of the planet.
finchy
10-27-2003, 04:20 AM
you got it in one mbatten! i was looking at those pools in yellowstone for inspiration although not to copy them, i have sketched out a new scene using those pools as a life source for something going on inside the moon, sketch is almost finished so ill put it up soon, decided to scrap the rock formations they looked to earthy!!! thanks,!

this is my second concept sketch for the "moon" those huge pools from the first one this time are used to feed the life force inside the moon the water falls into the hole and creates a formation that sculpts the surface. color coming soon.

color version of concept sketch 2. the hole is like a growing plant for the creation, the creations is growing its way out of the hole and makes its way to it position on the moon creating the landscape, in the background are fully grown creations that have sculpted the environment the ground is ALIVE!!!!....

any coments on the new design......

10-29-2003, 06:56 AM
it's quite original looking. I mean I don't know what I am looking at. but that's the point right. I see where you're going so that's good enough for a concept sketch. On more of a artsy side note. be careful of symetry. right now both sides are pretty much the sam and make the image pretty static.
I look forward to seeing more. I think this can turn out quite well.
SouthernLaw
10-29-2003, 01:15 PM
Nice! This is a huge improvement over your first idea and the notion of the "living ground" is very cool and could lead to some great images.
The only crit thus far is to make it more obvious that everything on the surface is supported by these funky root things. Showing the fairly new growth in the foreground and the older ones which have grown into mountains in the background can help show the age of the planet.
Those roots are going to be a pain to model though!:wip:
One more thing - If you want to get more critiques, put a link to your challenge thread in your signature file. There are over 1000 people entered and unless I do a search for your name, it takes forever to find your entry.

thanks for comments, i actually started designing the background more last night and had mid points and start points in the creation of the mountain creations... color is my problem right now cant get the right colors... thanks.
Ur second concept is far more better!Got a genuine "alien environment" mood.:wavey:

I feel it still needs work but its getting better. Try looking for something that is going to single you at from all of the other entries. Something absolutely and totally original but very different. I think the tip here is don't think like a human!
Good luck anyway
I'm in two minds wether to join the comp myself or not yet.
Kind regards

these are some designs on how i want my creations to move into there rightful positions on the moons surface, they grow into one position, then uproot them selves to move to the next a very very slow walk to there destination! these will be placed between the forground centre peice and the mountain backgrounds.

Just a more upclose version on the creations. When the formations reach there destination they meet up with other formations and join roots "hold hands" and grow together as one the link up with more creations to form a huge mountain type formation as seen in the background of the concept sketch 2.
finchy
10-31-2003, 10:00 PM
At the moment i think they look to much like human figures but when it comes to the modeling stage i will add more roots and detail just to make look not so obviouse what they are... im going to start working on my last concept sketch, any comments on the mid background detail? thanks.

11-01-2003, 06:09 PM
Hey finchy, that a really cool concept! I really like the idea that these root-creatures grow up in one area then migrate to where they are needed to form new ground.
Thats a very original idea, and could look really awesome.
Keep up the good work

thanks for the good comments! work has started on my last concept... but as it is a concept im sure it can be improved!!!! anyways im going to work on the symetry problem as KOryh said, and use my designs to make the moon have some history behind it! well back to work! finchy.
i like your concept a lot , is unique and you can make a very strange world with this trees.
:)

This is my third concept, tried to fix some of the previouse preblems and added more detail such as the middle ground having more tree like creatures sculpting the land and moving to there correct possitions the tree creatures also leave behind them holes and old roots where they had been rooted before, this is to show that they are moving (leaving foot prints) the main treee creature also has new roots growing out of the hole and on to the surface to show its crawling out of the main hole. the symetry on the both sides i hope has been fixed. The background has stayed the same. color version coming soon.

couldn't resist a lighting test render. Finchy.
Hey man..nice work so far.
Very original concept u have goin here...
U mentioned modeling the vines by hand. I dont envy you!!!
Neil Blevins wrote a script called Wire Jumble for making lots of random wires....Its not vines, but it oculd serve you well for covering large areas with small details...

I like more your second sketch, but I think the same, it is very simetrical. The other thing is about the light. Try to put more contrast.

thanks, i will have a look at that script! the light was just a test couldnt resist it! but thanks for comments! Finchy.

pyke? thanks. Finchy
DIRECT LINK 2 BLURS SCRIPT PAGE (http://www.neilblevins.com/blurscripts/blurscripts.htm)
THE BLUR ZIP FILE (http://www.blur.com/Tech/zip/bspack_r42.zip)
You have 2 DL the entire blur zip file with all there scripts. It says its for R4.2, but I know it works with 5.x.
And dont worry-the file is really small, and all of there scripts are really really REALLY usefull.

I like your vines and the concept... but I agree with glowz that the piece, at the moment, is too symetrical.
Things you might want to do. Don't do all of them, maybe just one or two.
-Off centre the main structure and dont have it perpindicular with the camera
-Off set the camera - set it really close to something and blur it slightly in the final image
- Have background elements or side vine things at different hights.
Oh... and the shape of the blue mountains on the horrizon makes it look like the moon is between the mountains and the camera.
PS-I really like the figures in the background, how they are all pulling at each other

I realy got behind this design, much more than my last design, I think the scene looks ok, but is definatly missing a mood!! but this usually comes in the post effects so im going to play with it and see what it looks like with diffrent weather conditions and lighting, the ocean was the longest to complete in this scene getting the texturing right was troublsome!!!! but i'm pleased with the overall look of the scene! any comments are welcome! thanks, Finchy!

I like your orginal concept with the weird tree thing and all the roots and branches. The big rock isn't very interesting.

One problem I see right away is the angle of the picture. It's too linear. Too symetric. The point of interest would do better NOT to be in the middle. Maybe put the camera to one side and add some more objects on the other? Pretty interesting anywayz.
The tallness if the stone gives the viewer a feeling of err... mysteri and power I think.
Respect the Stone!! :wip:
Keep it up.

Woohoo! I like colors and overall mood of your composition )) But I think it would be much nicer if you somehow make the water a bit "alienish" and add some detail to the Main Big Thingie on the horizon. Keep up posting updates !! ))
Cullen
01-09-2004, 09:25 AM
I actually really like the symetry thing you have going.
Maybe the sky needs some work to make the pic more interesting.
This looks straight out of a horror film... I can soo imagine a little girl walking towards the camera along the path.
finchy
01-09-2004, 08:06 PM
well, thanks for the positive feed back so far! the finished composition is almost complete, I gave the sky more depth and added a nice weather effect. I wanted the stone or 'Monolith' a sence of grandness and take your breath away at the site of this huge structure. Horror genre does come to mind when i see it, the little girl walking towards the camera is just creepy!!! sends chills down my spine just thinking of it! I will post a new image tomorrow!
I especially like how the stone raises out of the fog. :applause: And it "feels" huge just from the look of it.
Really nice work !

Well Guys here it is!! "Monolith" my final Image. Decided to go with the Rain weather and added a lightning strike. painting the water splashes was a long process but this smaller image doesn't do it justice. In the bigger image you can realy see the rain drops hitting the water and the rocks. Also added bounce light off the lightning strike to realy sit the bolt of lightning in the image. I also gave the sky more depth and layers it looked a little flat in the previous image, i think i gave it more mood and fits in well with the rest of the image. Over all im very pleased with the final image! i learnt a many things from it! This is my first competition so it was a great experience to work with many other talented artists on this web site!!! Good luck to everyone in the competition!! C&C very welcome! Finchy.

Congratulations on the final image. It looks fantastic. Youve really managed to capture a feeling of scale in a very cool, stark environment.
wow !
That's easily my favourite out of the entries I saw so far. :applause: :buttrock:
Would you mind putting up a wallpaper sized version ?
Say 1024*768 ?

WOW! thanks for the comments guys!! Scale was my main thinking when i started to build it in Max,
'Fin' been as you said it's your favorite so far i will post a bigger version for you tomorrow! this means a lot to me seeing the talent knocking around here!! :bounce: More comments welcome!! Finchy.
w000t, I'm already looking forward to the pic
might cheer me up a bit since the Packers just lost
Most of the other entries try to achieve their effect with a large amount of geometry and other fancy stuff.
Your work creates an enormous amount of emotional feedback (fear, repulsion but also curiosity) through its "simplicity". (I hope you get what I want to point out, )

Well 'FIN' heres the image for you, in 1024 * 768 as you requested. Glad you all like it so much! I was a bit worried about the simplicity of it and seeing some of the entries around that have very detailed geometry, You guys have realy made my day, week, and year! creating something that creates emotion like that is just wonderful! (wipes a tear away!!)lol. My Image isn't on the Voting page?!?!?!?! well pi**ed!!!!
anyone know why?
swadepgh
01-27-2004, 05:17 PM
Did you submit 6 of the 7 milestones through the CGnetworks/Alienware site?
If you did that and submitted a final via FTP then I can't think of any reason that you would not be on the voting page.
I hope you are able to get something worked out with the mods.
finchy
01-27-2004, 05:30 PM
i did submit milestones on my previous image, but when i made the final image the file got corupted so i couldn't submit the lighting and modeling stage. I do hope this isn't the reason why my Image isn't on the voting page!! still very annoyed! Finchy.
