Ok, I have fianlly had a few minutes to spare, here is my idea.
I am thinking a kind of Alien stone henge thing that has been carved/cut out of rock around a kind of huge raw gem. Like a kind of worship/power channeling platform thing...
see the sketches.
Right off to atart some 3-d

Well here is the start of the "base".
http://snowtrooper.com/matty/3D_gubbings/challange/basetest1.jpg
And here is a detail, with quick textures etc... and I am looking in to having the red layer with a small glow... not sure yet... long ways to go still

Any C/C welcome

hey thanks Michal, its good to get at least 1 reply post.
I have been working on the pillar things, I wasn't happy with the first ones I drew they didnt suit the base, these ones are getting there.
I am going to put the finer details like ornaments etc toward the end, Iv'e been working on a pattern on the floor... almost happy with that.

Interesting idea. The insides of some (presumably alien) mechanical clockwork comes to mind somehow. A very original idea from what I've seen around in this challenge so far!
What's your plan for making this look huuuuuuge then? I think that's probably the most difficult thing this time around, actually.

Hey James thanks for the reply DAMIT! you have a point.
It is looking a bit on the small to medium in scale huh?
I dont want to loose the detail in order to give the illusion oh huge size though. Its not ment to be huge, just biggish, maybee even just roomy.
I am having a wee rethink this weekend, off the comp and to the sketch book.

It is very tricky... I think it could maybe be passed off as 'roomy', but not more. But to be honest, it looks rather small to me at least.
Looking forward to see what you can come up with. Fingers are appropriately crossed

Here is a lighting test I was working on, forgive the stand-in ball shape.
I am re-working the design and might post some sketches soon. Have had some issues in giving the scene "scale", man I wish I could just pop a human in ther some place :p

How about setting the cam lower down and closer to the structure? Then play with the FOV-setting... Could work.

Here is a quick idea of the new look, I am going to try and make it moody and dark looking. But for now I'm off to check out the world preiere of The Return of The King! woohoo.

HEy,
Those textures are HOT MAN !
How do you do it ?
im 17 and still in school, and would like to know how to
work with textures.
Been playing with 3ds max for like 5 years now,
know alot, got to learn alot.
the only place i got to learn from is tutorials.
and im stupid,
so can you help me out ?
you dont have to neccessaraly send the textures over
if you dont want to.
but how do you work with high quality textures like that ?
what do you put together, i know the concept of all the
fade off, reflect/refract, mix, and all the sub texturing.
but its alittle complicated, do know what to put together
to get a certain texture. Very little experience.
how do you make metal ? liquid ? sh!t like that ?
oh yeah, i know alittle, and alot,
but i neeed to know MORE.
help me out ?
pleasE ?
Davidko.

Hey thanks,
But to tell you the truth I havn't really started to texture it yet. The ones on there are kind of quick stand-ins for the final ones, they will look similar in the end but Im not really worrying about them till I have finished modeling. Most of what you see at the mo is done with lighting, and sorry I dont know any-thing about 3dmax at all:shrug:
just keep practising and down loading tutorials off the net, and never under estimate good lighting.

the start of the platform and redesign

well here is part of my redesign. In order to add some scale I thought it would be good to introduce a thing that the occupants would use. So I have made a walkway platform thingy. It still has away to go, I am thinking of having its end lowering on to the power base platform or have a viewing platform at the end. I cant add too much more between this and what I have already done my poor little 400mhz G3 laptop with 512mb ram is really stating to struggle... Dam those volumetric lights for looking soooo good, and now you know why I have entered this challenge, sure is time for an upgrade!!
Again any c/c welcome

Appart from a few small bits, and I still havent decided on what the floaty thing in the middle will be, but for now the modeling is done. Off to start texturing and having a play with some lights... could be a while.

here is the lighting and texturing pretty much done. It is gonna take me a very long time to render this baby at the final res so I might start soon.

good modeling and lighting, what are you up to for rendering? are you going to use global illumination and-or final gathering for this, i bet you will...

this comment may be a bit irrelevant with your alienware artwork but I wanted to say that I like very much your avatar.
I've noticed it some time now and I wanted to ask if it is part of something you have modelled in the past?
can you point me to some renders of it?
thanks :)
PS. happy birthday
