General idea and composition that I'm going for. Im sure quite a bit will change when i take it into the 3rd.

Well...I dont think Im going to go with the above concept anymore...It just feels to too bland for me.
Ill have a new image tonite.

Why so? I thought it is a cool concept. Lets see what you will come up tonight with though. I personally did about 4-5 concepts before I registered with challange - so it might be a good idea.

I like that alot man, just let it evolve a bit first. You might come up with something nice. Dont worry too much, YA HAVE 3 MONTHS! :D lol

Defenately the first one is better and besides I have already seen a similar to the second scetch!!!
Powell
10-24-2003, 09:53 PM
Well...im still undecided on which concept to go with. Im starting to lean twards the second one just because it would be more challenging for me to create in 3d....Ive never done a natural landscape before...but Im open to suggestions... :thumbsdow  :thumbsdow
Ill get the second concept painting finished tonite.

Got a little further on the concept painting tonite.....will finish torrow. Mainly just added some detail to the land masses.

I'm kind of leaning towards your first idea; reminds of the wasted technological landscape from the "The Matrix" or "Terminator". Has very uncomfortable look, which I like.
Its a hard judgement to make, because your last entry is so well rendered. I agree that would take some doing to get it into 3D!:surprised
I think you're still working on that one, so I'll be back to check it out.
Great job so far. :applause:

Just a thought because you already have the clouds integrated underneath the islands, what about bringing in a waterfall instead of the mountain backdrop.
It would add more compositionally interesting elements as you could play with jutting rock formations and possibly even "bridges" to the islands. You'd bring a wonderful element of age to the plant formation further enhancing the grand concept.
Definatly think you have you work cut out for you with that second one, regarding the first painting i believe there will be a number of similar entries going for the city\glass\chasm thing. So far the second one in my opinion shows more promise.

Final Concept sketch. I took Lorecanths idea of the waterfall and I think it works out well....thanks Lorecanth!
Still not too sure what to do with the sky, but i'll work that out as i go.
Time to start modeling!

Many thanks to everyone for all the kind comments so far!
Designer2: Ive thought about putting bridges between the islands and it has been suggested to me by a couple people now...but, I think Im going to hold of on them for now. First, I dont know if ill have enough time to include them and second, Im still not sure if structures of anykind are allowed in this challenge.??? Its a great idea and i would really like to do it, but Ill have to wait and see how this challenge plays out.
Modeling updates coming soon!:buttrock: :buttrock:

beautiful work! The combination of natural (blue sky, mountains, and waterfall) and surreal (suspended mountains and waterfalls larger than mountains) makes this a really stunning image!
the only suggestion I can make, which is just one opinion, is to add a little bit of contrasting color somewhere, maybe in the rocks or plants, something subtle just to add to the composition and to make the whole thing "pop" as an image. Know what I mean?
I make this suggestion in the most humblest of opinions. Your image is amazing!
rock on!
Lorecanth
11-02-2003, 10:47 AM
hmm i'm going to go with incher on this one. Maybe something focal to pop the image in terms of color, perhaps an object of the edge of the precipace. A simple flower perhaps, or maybe all the to a bird in flight, something to add to the vastness of the image.

I was able to get a little modelling done this weekend. This is one of the land masses coming out of the clouds. Its not quite finished...I still want to add more detail like vines and such, but i think ill tackle that when i start texturing.
Tell me, are those interwoven splines.?? That's very complex... what the, how the! That's pretty nice I must say.

http://www.vfs.com/~brettkys/model_test_02.jpg
here is the latest modeling update. all the basic land mass shapes are there, now i just have to add detail. The land was modeled by using Maya's sculptPolys tool with a Wacom. The tree/vines/webby things that support the land were created by first making a particle simulation that flowed upwards and collided with the land geometry. I then converted that particle motion into CV splines and tweaked the final shapes by hand. Next, I extruded nurbs circles on the curves, converted those surfaces into lowrez poly meshes and joined them all together
.....sheesh..and i still have to do how many more of them??
:scream:
incher00, Lorecanth: I know what you mean....and Im workin on it..just not too sure what I want to do about it right now...it does need something...
kjc: the above should answer your question
everyone else: Thanks so much for all the comments and praise...it keeps me truckin!

you and your fancy modeling ways... love the organic feel of it. Already i can see the level of complexity this is going towards. Keep a running tally of the poly count, I'm going to start laughing when it gets past 10 mil.

"thats a good way of medeling those objects! i have a lot of root viney things to do to...."
If you want the curves to split off like branches, just make the particles emit other particles over their lifespan.
Lorecanth: Im sure the poly counts will be quite high on this one...luckly its only a still.:surprised

Seems to be coming along nicely Brett, the concept is solid and so is the composition of the piece, a few bridges would be nice to create more "link" between the bits of land maybe somes vines and random objects hanging over the edge could add to the dynamic aspect......keep up the good work!

This concept has a lot of potential. It would be cool to see something really interesting that's very close to the camera. It'll let the viewer obtain a better understanding of the texture and details going into those mountains if they saw some elements of them close up. Like some tufts of grass, a rock or two, and maybe a small animal or something.

Well...no new updates yet...Hopefully Ill have something new to post next week.:hmm:
oxyg3n: I kinda wanted to keep away from contrasting colors, but I will have a lot of contrast between the lights and darks of the final image...as well as pushing the color saturation in the foreground. Ill work all this out once i start setting up the lighting.
zbgump: I figured someone would find it usefull.
Fred. thnx bro. Good to see you are still kicking around in these forums.
Lord Twilight: thnx!
azerak: Dont worry...i will for sure have something cool in the foreground...still playing with ideas, but i want to keep it a suprise untill the final image.:scream:

Its been quite a while since Ive last posted...been very busy. Ive had a little time to work on this project over the past month and was able to finish most of the modeling.
Here is a test of one of the islands in 3d. Not much for textures yet and the lighting will change, but i thought this would make a nice post.

Your concepts are awesome. I wish that this contest would allow for 2D as a final image too, because this is almost too good for just concepts. Can't wait to see your final image. It will be a sight to behold.

I like where you're going with the grand epicness of the scene. Also by inserting the tree like structures you've succeeded in defining the scale.
As far as integration of the tree's I would think possibly work them into the entire concept of the piece. At the resolutions required for final submittal, it might be worth it to integrate the tree's into the under island supporting structure. Go for that whole twisty cool look in the vegetation as well as the support structure.
Can't wait to see where this ends up.
Powell
12-08-2003, 04:45 AM
BClaw, chadtheatist: thnx!
Lorecanth: My main reason for putting the trees in there was to define the scale. Im not sure if i like them though...i might get rid of them...hmmm:shrug:

Soft_XSamurai: bridges....i did do a quick painting with some bridges and i kinda liked how it looked..unfortuneatly i dont think i saved it.:D I doubt that i will do the bridges in the final image just because someone/thing had to have built the bridges and i dont really want that idea in my final image. Maybe ill go with something a little more 'alien'...hmm...
Pyke: thnx!...the clouds and waterfall are painted in on that last image....Im still trying to get a feel for where i want to take this thing.

greatt work! do you plan to use the latest color post in the final?
personally i love monochrome color , but I think the eariler post with color ( the mountain one) is very very strong .
and i notice that the two mountain in the center is too symetry
( i mean it's the same size )
the orther is perfect , cool cocept ,Keep going , good luck:thumbsup:

saturen3, the1st_angel: I have the image broken up into around 12 scenes for rendering....each scene roughly 2.5 million polys. Im also using quite a few clip maps to help add more detail. Its a bit overkill, but my final image will be 4500x1350 so a lot of the detail will be visible. thnx for the kind words!
monsitj: the monochrome was just to showoff the modeling. I am still using rouhgtly the same color as in my concept. thnx!:buttrock:

I think the reason it feels like an illustration is because of the amount of detail. Beggining to understand the modeling process behind that. Ha you'd need the alienware box, to even begin to model this amount of detail.
One question, you explained how you did the under branches using the particle flow techinque. But how the hell did you do the salt bloc type mountain structures ? Shear time or some prcedural modeling technique?

Well, Im my tired state of finishing this image i managed to spell my own name wrong on the Final jpeg...how dumb is that? Oh well..Ill just leave it.
thanks to everyone for the very kind comments!
MirageGraphics: Thnx! I tried to go for a dawn sort of lighting scenario. I played around with using more light, but i felt that the image became too overall bright for my liking.
Lorecanth: All the mountain and the foreground structures were all modeled in Houdini. I just created rough geometry in the general shape that i wanted, then converted that geometry into particles. Finally i just took some simple geometry and duplicated in to the particles with some randomization....Thinking about it...almost all the geometry in this image was creating using particles....hmmm
Good luck to everyone! Im seeign some really nice stuff so far!
