here's some sketches i did earlier today..... more to come soon....
i wish to create some sort of organic setting but made of chrome like material.... i mean, organic designs with metallic diffuse.....
http://www.angelfire.com/un/kenimation/images/awc01.jpg
this is the first layout i thought of for the setting.... a really huge sunken crater thingy with a lake in the middle......
http://www.angelfire.com/un/kenimation/images/awc02.jpg
this is the second one.... it's a sorta alien temple where they worship their god... played with distort perspective to show more space of the temple ......
http://www.angelfire.com/un/kenimation/images/awc03.jpg
here's some ideas of what i would like to apply on the walls and surfaces of the terrain throughout the setting..... very alien thingy....
alrite shoot me...

thanx borro.... i think this is my biggest modelling and texturing challenge yet for myself!
here's an updated sketch of the scene....... added some details and rough idea how things would look like..... going to add more details soon.......

aaargh! i can't post anything for 3 days cos im away from home!!! sucks to be in this situation...... guess u guys will be expecting lotsa sketches on monday!
oh yeah i forgot to mention the thing i added in the middle of the image is the "god" of the aliens....floating in the middle of the temple.....
funnydoodle
10-26-2003, 03:30 PM
im back and here's more sketches!
http://www.angelfire.com/un/kenimation/images/awc05.jpg
this is the sketch of the alien being which inhabits the place... note that the legs grow out of their eye sockets.... arms grow out of their nostrils....
http://www.angelfire.com/un/kenimation/images/awc06.jpg
this is their god to be placed in the middle of the temple... it's supposed to be a pentagon crystal with veins in the middle connecting to the eye at the top.
http://www.angelfire.com/un/kenimation/images/awc07.jpg
one of the designs for tunnels leading to the temple...
http://www.angelfire.com/un/kenimation/images/awc08.jpg
and yes, my latest development on the scene composition.... added the tunnel.... now it's as though u are standing at the mouth of the tunnel watching the temple and still able to see the path along the tunnel towards darkness.....
time for c&c!

I like what you have so far, but I was under the impression that there weren't supposed to be any creatures in it?
funnydoodle
10-27-2003, 04:54 AM
creatures... the aliens is just a reference to the overall design consistency..... i might also want to model part of the creature to be used as wall surface...... like face with teeth coming thru the walls..... maybe it's leg design for beams......
You have a very nice 'Gigeresk' design going on there. I like the idea of having the bone motif, but keeping the textures chrome! very unusual...

A lot of character in that one. Tunel is a great piece- fur is bit less apealing to me but that's just personal preference I guess. I can not wait to see more.

Hey, where are those robotic pipes/tubes from the early sketches ?
I don't get it: everybody is going for organic-living alien things.
We don't get anything but zerg like structures.
The contest instructions do not exclude robotic elements, and a cybernetic living planet would bring more novelty to the concept.
But than again, it is your choice.
I dared to post this here, cos you had some mechanism like elements in your early sketches. Maybe it is not too late for you ... ;)

3d version of my scene layout......
check it out...... once all the pieces of props are done i will place them in the scene to complete the whole jigsaw puzzle thingy.... hehe.....
still need something that will hint the scale of the whole thing....

Hubertus, don't worry ..... there will be a hybrid of both orga and mecha...... it's just not time yet....... hang on.....

Koryh, i thought of doing something similar to Bjork's mtv style of anvironment..... very bright lighting with plastic + chrome materials..... with a hybrid of organic traits.... i dunno how to describe it, i'll have to show u when it's done.... lol..... well till then, still have lotsa modelling to do!
and thanx skls for the compliments!

some more props..... alien control screen thingy....... as u can see, im beginning to add in more mechas and techy things into the design..... more stuff soon.......

http://www.angelfire.com/un/kenimation/images/awm11.jpg
http://www.angelfire.com/un/kenimation/images/awm12.jpg
crits, i need crits.....
Im really like ing this so far-with textures its going 2 look awsome!
I owuld try to integrate the mecha parts a bit more with the orga...perhaps some 'organic clamps' holding the screen in position...mabe make them look like fingers...
pigwater
10-30-2003, 11:23 AM
i have to agree with pyke ... the transition from organic to mech is to abrupt ... there is no flow from one to the other, one stops and the other starts where there could be some nice "leading into" geometry
it's really hard to get an overall sense of 'what' goes 'where' from your random scetches,.... but there are some very nice elements you have here... and once these pieces fall into place to where we can visualize it like you have , i am sure it will all make much more sense and be a very intriguing piece
it's coming along real nice, and a fun one to watch  .. best of luck to you with this

yo pyke and pigwater! i'll definitely take ur suggestion into consideration... thanx alot for the crit!
well, time for an update.... here's another prop. sort of surgical tools.... the mechanical parts are rigged and fully poseable.... obviously i'm still not finished with it specially the main orga joints.... ah yes, there's giger's alien there..... but sorta modified it so it blends in with the mechas.... plan to add in more detail ..... till then, i'll leave y'all to crit and comm on this first..... maybe there's something y'all see that i couldn't.... cheers!

amazing modeling work. I gather ur wicked fast too! can't wait to see more! I'd love to see some time lapse vids of ur work...
Rock on
-Chris
BLUR have a script that creates time lapse video's of your work (i use it when making tutorials)...
www.nielblevins.com has all of the blur scripts (under CG Resources I think).
Im really really loving your separate elements. You are gonna be a force 2 be reconed with!
Only advice id give you right now, is that alot of these 'devices' seem 2 fit in2 an enclosed space...a room of some sort. The problem here is that the challenge calls for a 'landscape' of an alien planet. Just re-read the brief a little, and make sure that your final idea fits in2 what is required!
Some truely awsome stuff here man. Really really really good!!!
Id also love 2 see a little MPEG or AVI of the arm moving about. Just a curiosity really-but non-the-less, really cool. :)
KEEP IT UP MAN!!
-Chris-

wow! im getting so many wows! really many thanx to y'all!!!
it's really an honour that u guys want to see a time lapse vid of my work..... thanx pyke for pointing out to me where to get the scripts but i couldn't find it..... plus, i read that the scripts are made for max users..... and sadly im not... so im not sure if there's any other ways i can fulfill ur wishes.... any help would be appreciated.... thanx!
btw, did the challenge say it has to be outdoor/open air? im not sure, i just re-read the instructions and it only says it is a massive and grand place.....
[--You are standing on some unknown alien setting. This location seems to be whispering to you, you have a feeling that something was created here; maybe even the land itself is alive. The location seems unpopulated, but not necessarily abandoned or neglected, nor rusting or decaying, but life forms are inexistent. The location where you stand seems to be moving and it is difficult to comprehend its function or intent. The surfaces and materials that surround you are nothing like you have ever seen before. The design and layout of the location defies logic or the laws of physics, though only slightly, it seems that reality here is somewhat obscure. You feel a sense of grandness and awe, your breath is coming in short tight gasps from witnessing this alien phenomenon as it starts to overwhelm you. You cry out, "Is anyone there?"--]
[--Create a 3D rendered image of what you might see if this were you. This is a massive and grand area, so this has to be conveyed in a believable manner. Everyday materials and structures are a thing of the past, what you’re trying to achieve is something never seen or experienced before.--]
no where does it says that it has to be open air..... uhm..... just to confirm this...... are there any guidelines i've missed?

KEEP THE MOTOR RUNNING
THIS STUFF ROCKS!
Nothing that limits the field 2 an open area, but it is just going 2 be extreamly hard to depict a "a massive and grand area" if u are indoors....
If you can pull it off, i think ur image will be a cut above the rest!
::EDIT:: Just saw that i did say it had 2 be a landscape...my wording was just a little bit off. Sorry bout that man!
funnydoodle
11-03-2003, 05:35 PM
carlocki, thanx a lot!
and pyke, there's no need to be sorry, we're just helping each other here.... well, the way im gonna make the viewer feel the place as massive and grand is to make it look like a very very huge cylindrical tall hall..... i'll have to show y'all the whole thing when i put everything together later on when u can get the exact scale...... well that'll be a long time from now.....
in the meantime, pls take a look at the vid of the mecha arm moving, which u requested ..... it's just a simple animation to show the posability so please mind the tubes overlapping the wall and such.... hehe.... tell me what u think guys.... it's divx ,355kb

Hey bro. I can't express my thought for wat i had seen your recent work here. You are growing faster & creativity in making strange machinery lifeform from time to time.
hehe. i can see u are going to make a brilliant day for ur life.
backtowork! Will view ur stuff from hours to hours..haha.
I like the look of these models. Good details, too.
With dense models like these, this could really be an awesome render if your lighting and texturing is put together correctly. Use GI if you can.
Looking forward to the final on this one.

Images like Yours make my booksellers happy- everytime I see something like that I am going back to learning. I'll not even say it's good... I'll just sit in the corner and watch...

I can't believe I have missed this thread for so long... wait for it.... wait for it...
WOW!
This is really cool. I luv this type of art. I think it is great that you are concentraiting on seperate elements and not setting up a definitve box for you to work in. You are a really fast modeler.
Keep pushing those organic and bone forms.
Tell us your stats... Software I mean.
