hehe. good point, i suppose that is a bit necessary ;)
the image that i have in my head would actualyl be reminiscent of... utah.
fairly desolate, with the primary focus being the rectagonal columns 'growing' out of the ground. the columns are the source of all the gaseous vapors in the atmosphere.
i am thinking of using yellow highlights on lavender and blue accented ground (too stereotypical?), with faint reds and pinks in the airborn particles, with yellowish clumps (yellow like a sulphuric gas). the flower seemed like a decent idead at first.. some sort of alien garden, but i havent been able to get any ideas flowing out of that vein.
also in contemplation: glowing pools of viscous fluid emanating the same gaseous formations e.g. hot springs on a cold day.
thats my thought line so far.
any input?
im not too much for ideas at the moment, as i have never really done scifi before.. and i dont want to mimic the little that i have seen in movies/tv/etc.

main shapes dominating the 'scape, never mind the plant ;)

Cool idea for a planet. Something you might wanna try also is to create something that none of us are supposed to understand what it is. Seems all the movies, television shows, etc. about alien planets and ships show things that are bound to shapes and technology that we understand or could see happening in the future. The movie Aliens was great because some the the things that you saw you werent supposed to understand. Just my two cents.
On a different subject, I noticed that on your rendered scene you show the near and far ranges on your camera (the area that will be rendered). I havent figured out how to get those to show up on my camera view and none of my documentation or tutorials or courseware seems to mention it, at least not by any search string that I try typing in. How do you get those to show up? Good luck with the alien world.

hmm, good point about the 'known' details...
and the 'camera - action/title safe' display is easy to get to....
just right click on your viewport title (in this case - perspective)
and click 'show safe frame' (this is ust for 3ds max btw). it will automatically configure itself to your render outpout dimensions.
any other ideas for the scene? i'd appreciate the feedback

Hey, this latest model work is great! The way the pillars seem to be stretching back behind the camera at some point is a great way to achieve depth. I look forward to more.
