View Full Version : How to get Vista to see all cores

Hi I have just installed a vista on one of my harddrives and all is fine except I cannot get vista to use all 4 cores in my system. In the task manager I only see 2 cpu graphs when there should be 4, in the device manager I can see 4 cpus all installed and listed correctly etc.
Maya seems to defualt to only using 2 threads when rendering now as well. Is there anyway to get Vista to recheck my system configuration so it uses all available power?

My system specs are:
Tyan S2895
2x AMD opteron 285 (4cores)
8gigs of ram
Vista x64 premium edition

As a note I have searched google for a few hours now with no real answer to what seems a common problem....

If I'm reading it right those are older processors and dual socket board. It's a continuum but generally the further away the hardware is from the OS in time the more likely the incompatibilities. If it were me I would check out the Vista Hardware Compatibility list:

I'm going to assume you mean "Home Premium" in which case, yeah, only one of the two processors will work. Windows is licensed based on many different factors and one of them is the number of processor sockets. All of the Home versions of any Windows product are for a single processor socket only since the target audience is an average consumer. Professional/Business versions are for up to two sockets and after that there are the Server versions which support a varying number of sockets.

Yes it is vista home premium so that will be the problem then, thanks for your replies guys I think I will just stick with xpx64 as I don't really like vista anyways..

Try Windows 7 Professional (64-bit), it works quite well.

You can download the ISO for free, burn it to a disc, and then install for a trial. The trial is 120 days at which point you can either go back to Windows XP or just buy a license and continue with the trial install converted to a licensed install.
