View Full Version : Different Renderers?
manosteele12 10-22-2003, 07:28 PM I am getting confused about how mental ray works. When I am using the hypershader am I building materials for mental ray? If so can I use other renderers with Maya, such as RenderMan? Do other Renderers use somthing like the hypershade to build materials? Just curiouse.

mental ray can use them but they are derived from mayas shaders
If so can I use other renderers with Maya, such as RenderMan?
renderman and mental ray shaders are very complex and based i think on programming like c++ or something ,i havent got that far yet
Do other Renderers use somthing like the hypershade to build materials?
i havent used renderman yet but i think like i said they are built not froma interface but from proghramming technics...
i really dont know and it shows but basically cim told you everything...lol

If you use RAT from Pixar for rendering from Maya by PRMan you could easly create Shaders like you do in Hypershade.
But it has not a friendly interface ! I dont like it a lot.

Mental Ray is a renderer, that is available as a plug for Maya 4.5 and is contained in Maya 5. It is an advanced render, that gives you effects such a Global Illum and Final Gathering and many more advanced stuff. No need to get into detail here. It is also available as a stand-alone renderer.
You can choose it in the Render Globals or in the Render>REnder Using Menu. Most materials are derived from maya, but there are certain maya effects, such as fur, that cannot be rendered by MR.
But all of this is explained in you manual very well if you have 5 , there's a very good MR reference in Maya 5, don't know if there are good documentations for the older MR version for Maya 4.5

In Prman, RAT, there is Slim. Slim is sumthin' like Maya's hypershade. In Slim You can make new shaders, connect them together, etc.

It's Your opinion of course but for me Prman and Rat got one of the most user friendly interface. Really logic and easy. Using Prman - Rat and Slim is uch more easier for me than Mental Ray. It's my opinion.
